Publication number: 20240034686Abstract: A two-step synthesis of SiC including initial exposure of carbon surfaces to Si vapor, followed by Si melt infiltration, is described herein. Interrupted differential thermal analysis (DTA) of amorphous C and Si powder mixtures and microstructure characterization are used to identify the stages of the reaction. Exposure to Si vapor yields a SiC layer with nanoscale porosity driven by the volume change associated with the reaction. This forms a continuous pore network that promotes subsequent melt access to the reaction front with the C. While the pores remain open, the vapor phase reaction proceeds at a nearly-constant rate and exhibits a strong temperature sensitivity, the latter due largely to the temperature sensitivity of the Si vapor pressure. The implications for enhancing the reactive melt infiltration process and fabrication of SiC matrices for ceramic composites are discussed.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 20, 2021Publication date: February 1, 2024Applicant: The Regents of the University of CaliforniaInventors: Ravit Silverstein, Frank W. Publication number: 20240034692Abstract: The present invention is concerned with plasterboards including at least two layers A and B of different composition, wherein layer A includes a calcium sulfate binder and a synthetic polymer foam and the layer B includes a calcium sulfate binder and a surfactant foam and wherein the at least one layer A is a surface layer. Improved nail pull resistance can be achieved in lightweight plasterboards, if foamed synthetic polymer is present in a surface layer. The present invention further concerns a method for the production of corresponding products, an apparatus for the production of such products as well as the use of synthetic polymer foam in a surface layer to produce plasterboards with high nail pull resistance at a minimal amount of synthetic polymer.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 22, 2021Publication date: February 1, 2024Applicant: Knauf Gips KGInventors: Stergios Karakoussis, Georgi Paraskov, Alexander Hartmann, Carlo Knauf, Anton Peter
