A Piezoelectric Micromachined Ultrasonic Transducer (pMUT) array is disposed within the distal end of the body. Further, the pMUT array comprises a plurality of pMUT array elements arranged on a substrate. Further, an insulating material is disposed at the distal end over an imaging window, to provide electrical isolation and transmission of ultrasound signals. The insulating material corresponds to a polyether block amide (PEBA) or Pebax, or thermoplastic elastomer (TPE).

Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for performing transcranial diagnostic procedures using a transcranial ultrasound transducer array. The array elements are positioned and oriented such that far field regions respectively associated therewith spatially overlap within the brain of a patient. The array elements may be oriented approximately normal to the skull, permitting efficient coupling of ultrasound energy into the brain. The array elements are controlled to generate ultrasound pulses, where the timing of the pulses is controlled, based on registration between the array elements and volumetric image data, such that ultrasound energy is focused at a target within spatially overlapping far fields of the array elements. The transcranial ultrasound transducer array elements may be positioned and oriented relative to the skull such that their respective ultrasound beams are focused within the skull and diverging with the brain.

Abstract: Systems and methods for defining a boundary of a region of interest in an ultrasound image are provided. The method includes receiving an ultrasound image having pixels and automatically processing the ultrasound image to output a probability of each of the pixels being in a region of interest. The method includes applying a first threshold value to determine a boundary of the region of interest. The first threshold value corresponds with a first segmentation sensitivity level of a plurality of segmentation sensitivity levels. The method includes displaying the ultrasound image with the boundary overlaid on the ultrasound image. The method includes receiving a user selection of a second segmentation sensitivity level that corresponds with a second threshold value different from the first threshold value, and dynamically updating the boundary overlaid on the ultrasound image at the display based on the second threshold value.

Abstract: A method is provided for generating an ultrasound image of an anatomical region having a volume. First image low resolution image data is enhanced by adapting a 3D anatomical model to the image data to generate a second, greater, quantity of ultrasound image data in respect of the anatomical region. The enhanced volumetric information is then displayed. An anatomical model is thus used to complete partial image data thereby increasing the image resolution, so that a high resolution volumetric image can be displayed with a reduced image capture time.

Abstract: An ultrasound signal processor uses an excitation generator to cause displacement of a membrane or surface while a series of ultrasound pulses are applied to the membrane or surface. Phase differences between a transmitted signal and received signal are examined to determine the movement of the membrane or surface in response to the applied excitation. An examination of the phase response of the membrane or surface provides a determination as to whether the fluid type behind the membrane or surface is one of: no fluid, serum fluid, or purulent fluid.

Abstract: In one embodiment, a method is provided. The method includes transmitting a set of ultrasound waves to towards a target area. The set of ultrasound waves are transmitted by a set of ultrasound elements. The set of ultrasound elements are positioned at different locations in a transducer assembly. The method also includes receiving a set of reflections of the set of ultrasound waves. The set of reflections of the set of ultrasound waves are received by the set of ultrasound elements. The method further includes determining a set of correction values for the set of ultrasound elements. Each correction value of the set of correction values represents a refraction of one reflection of the set of reflections as the one reflection passes through a respective ultrasound element of the set of ultrasound elements. The method further includes generating imaging data based on the set of reflections of the set of ultrasound waves and the set of correction values for the set of ultrasound elements.

Abstract: Devices and methods for performing a skin biopsy are discussed herein. The skin biopsy device provides for consistent depth and shape, such as by reducing or eliminating operator error or inter-operator variability by generating the same forces across multiple uses. The skin biopsy device can also eliminate puckering of wound closures by incorporating a fusiform blade (e.g., elliptical blade or a diamond-shaped blade). The skin biopsy device includes a casing, a firing pin, a retaining rod, and a blade. The retaining rod holds the blade or can attach to a punch biopsy. The firing pin generates and impacts the retaining rod with a force necessary to drive the blade a given depth into a target tissue to obtain a biological sample.
