Abstract: A gas-cooled laser apparatus comprises a casing, a laser energy generator disposed of the casing for generating a laser beam, a low-pressure zone and a high-pressure zone provided within the casing. The low-pressure zone generates a vacuuming action while producing a first gaseous stream. The high-pressure zone generates a second gaseous stream. The first and second gaseous streams travel within the casing in the opposite directions. One of the gaseous streams utilized to cool the laser generator is at least partially drawn from a skin treated site by the laser beam. One of the streams drawn from the skin treated site is adapted to vacuum any skin debris generated by the interaction between the laser beam and the skin and directs the debris into the casing interior for further filtration and disposal.

Abstract: A method for determining a destructive tear in real tissue of a real eye by simulation includes providing an evaluation unit with at least one item of information characterizing the real tissue of the eye. Using the evaluation unit, the method includes using the information to create an at least two-dimensional digital tissue model of the eye tissue. The method includes simulating a tearing action on the tissue using a simulated surgical instrument and/or a simulated point where the instrument acts on the tissue, particularly for actions that could potentially cause tearing during a real ophthalmic surgical procedure. The evaluation unit is then provided with information regarding the reaction of the tissue model to the simulated action. Using the evaluation unit, the method includes using the reaction information and the simulated tearing action to determine a potential tear line in the real tissue.

Abstract: Aspects of the disclosure include systems and methods for planning and/or performing an ablation procedure. Volumetric image data including a needle, such as a physical ablation needle or a virtual needle, can be analyzed to segment the needle within the volume. A first cross-sectional, two-dimensional view of the volume showing a first plane in which an axis defined by the needle lies can be generated and displayed. The view can be manipulated to display a generated second cross-sectional, two-dimensional view of the volume showing a second plane through the volume in which the longitudinal axis defined by the virtual needle lies, wherein the second plane is different from the first plane. Additional segmented features such as lesions in the image data, treatment regions, isotherms, and the like can be included in views to be analyzed from a plurality of views that include the needle.

Abstract: A surgical robotic system is paired with an imaging system that may operate in a plurality of imaging modes, including white light and near infrared (NIR) light. The robotic system includes a plurality of robotic arms, one of which controls a laparoscopic camera providing video data based on the selected imaging mode to an image processing device. One or more other arms control one or more corresponding robotic instruments, which include fiducial markers formed from a fluorescent material detectable in the NIR imaging mode. The markers allow for visualization of the instruments in the NIR imaging mode, which is monochromatic. The image processing device also generates masked or virtual overlays of the instrument and registers the overlays with the instruments in the monochromatic video feed, providing additional visualization. Registration of the overlays is performed using fiducial markers, which act like landmarks for aligning the overlay to the actual image of the instrument in the video feed.

Abstract: A variety of medical and non-medical devices are exploited by users to address a wide range of conditions. However, in the vast majority of instances the device has a limited number of options with respect to its fit for the user and its performance. Further, the determination of target performance and fit are established on a qualitative basis rather than a quantitative basis. In many instances these combinations lead to low user acceptance of the device due to the resulting performance and fit issues. Accordingly, it would enhance performance and user acceptance if a quantitative determination provided a recommended type where options exist, and this determination provided the basis of a custom designed device to the user's specific anatomical and/or performance requirements.

Abstract: An intraocular lens (IOL) has a small, central lens suspended within a pliable housing and, when the housing is filled with liquid, is coaxially aligned with a second small lens embedded in the wall of the housing. The suspension is on a dome- or other-shaped webbing attached to an inner circumference of the wall. When filled with liquid, forces squeezing or pulling the equator of the housing, as with ciliary muscles in the eye, adjust a distance between the lenses in order to adjust focus. Optional haptics may project from points on or above and below the equator. A recess in the posterior hemisphere of the housing can keep cell growth away from an optical axis of the lens system. A third small lens can be embedded in an opposite wall of the housing and coaxially aligned with the other lenses to form a three-lens, ultra-zoom system.

Abstract: An accommodating intraocular lens (IOL) is formed from an anterior or posterior half molded as a chambered, polymer sack with a mouth opening smaller than its largest width that is mated to another half molded as a pliable bowl having a rim larger than the rest of the half. The resulting shell has a seam that is parallel to and does not cross or touch the equator such that the IOL is asymmetric between its front and back. A circular depression around the optical axis can be made in the anterior and/or posterior half such that a surrounding capsular bag seals against the rim of the depression, and an interior of the depression(s) does not touch the capsular bag.

Abstract: Provided are devices and methods for augmenting mitral valve function. A cardiac valve prosthesis device comprises a stent frame assembly having an atrial portion and a ventricular portion, a peripheral ring attached to the stent frame assembly, which divides the stent frame assembly into the atrial and ventricular portions, and a plurality of valve leaflets fixedly coupled to the stent frame assembly. The peripheral ring fits over a native mitral valve annulus when the prosthesis device is implanted in a native mitral valve. The peripheral ring limits the protrusion of the stent frame assembly into a ventricular chamber and reduces the effect on ventricular outflow or excursion of a native leaflet by such protrusion.
