  • Publication number: 20030116035
Abstract: A supercalender has a top roll, a bottom roll, and a plurality of intermediate rolls. The intermediate rolls are mounted to support frames by pivot arms. The pivot radius defined by the arms is at least about 2½ times the diameter of the largest intermediate roll. Hydraulic load support cylinders are arranged between the intermediate roll bearings and anchor points which are spaced away from the intermediate rolls, to allow greater movement without mechanical interference between hydraulic load support cylinders. The greater length of the pivot arms combined with a greater stroke of the load support cylinders allows the supercalender to accommodate filled rolls which change diameter substantially over their life, as the surface of the rolls is repeatedly turned down to refurbish the roll surface. The calender may be based on an existing calender of the closed A-frame type.

  • Patent number: 4959117
Abstract: An apparatus for pressing laminated composites formed of two glass layers and one interposed thin plastic layer presses the glass/plastic composite while the glass/plastic composite is in a vertical position. A horizontal conveyor delivers the composite to the apparatus, and a tipping device places the composite in a vertical position. A suction cup unit, which is rotatably mounted on a supporting shaft, receives the composite from the tipping device. A movable carriage moves the supporting shaft, suction cup unit, and composite to a pair of pressing rolls. The pressing rolls receive the composite therebetween and press the composite layers together. Another rotatably mounted suction cup unit removes the composite from the pressing rolls and delivers the composite to another conveyer. The arrangement allows highly curved glass/plastic composites to be pressed with no risk of breaking the glass and without requiring manual intervention.

  • Patent number: 4736678
Abstract: A hydraulic adjustment motor containing a piston-and-cylinder unit is provided at the roll surface of a roll to be moved to position the roll surface relative to another roll surface of a further roll. Each adjustment motor is arranged between the related roll surface to be moved and its related roll stand. A regulation device is arranged between a pressure source, the pressure chamber of the adjustment motor and a hydraulic medium vessel. This regulation device regulates impingement of the pressure chamber with different pressures up to the maximum pressure of the pressure source and regulates the outflow of a selected volume of the hydraulic medium out of the pressure chamber, correlated to the desired lowering of each roll surface, during lowering of the roll surface and for maintaining a residual volume of the hydraulic medium. Consequently, there is provided a defined relative position between the roll surfaces.
