  • Patent number: 5535670
Abstract: A cantileverable roll for use in a roll press, wherein the cantileverable roll cooperates with a backing roll. The cantileverable roll has a rotating surface and is either a solid rotatable roll body or a stationary roll body with a rotatable shell around it. A journal at each end of the cantileverable roll is supported in a respective bearing bracket. At one end of the roll, preferably the drive end, there is a non-rotating extension piece which extends out axially from the roll body and is fastened to the bearing bracket at that end. A tension bar or the like connects the extension piece to a stationary structural part and introduces force in the roll body which compensates for the weight of the roll when the other end of the roll is temporarily unsupported and the roll is cantilevered. The backing roll may also be cantilevered. The various techniques for supporting the one end of the roll by using the coupling element from the extension piece to the frame of the paper making machine are disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4862796
Abstract: An apparatus is for crushing at least one of a plurality of metal cans having a predetermined diameter and a predetermined length less than about twice the predetermined diameter. The apparatus includes a pair of cylindrical rollers mounted for rotation in opposite directions about parallel horizontal axes with a predetermined distance therebetween. Each of the rollers has a predetermined roller diameter greater than four times the predetermined diameter of the can. An array of extensions on the cylindrical surface of each of the rollers extends a predetermined height from the cylindrical surface and is separated from adjacent extensions on the cylindrical surface to cause the extensions of the array to cover less than ten percent of the cylindrical surface to allow general alignment of and positioning of the metal cans therebetween.

  • Patent number: 4757582
Abstract: A method for controlling the transverse thickness profile of paper or other web-like product by controlling temperature, including the axial temperature profile, of the mantle of a roll forming a nip with another roll in the manufacture of the paper or other web-like product includes forming a layer of heat transfer liquid on the inner surface of the mantle under the effect of the centrifugal forces generated by the rotation of the mantle, the layer of heat transfer liquid being divided into separate annular sections, and controlling the temperature of the heat transfer liquid layer of each of the sections. A roll in accordance with the invention includes a cylindrical outer mantle rotatably mounted at its axial ends, a stationary inner shaft situated within the mantle and partitions for dividing a layer of heat transfer liquid formed on the inner surface of the mantle into a plurality of separate annular sections.

  • Patent number: 4701240
Abstract: A calendering device has a plurality of pressure rollers and an opposing plurality of counterpressure rollers, each rotatably mounted on a piston rod movable in a direction for permitting the pressure rollers and counterpressure rollers to approach one another to calender a product. The pistons of the piston rods are mounted within pneumatic casings and are moved by a diaphragm within the pneumatic casings. There is no contact between the pistons and the walls of the pneumatic casings, thereby reducing the frictional resistance to the movement of the rollers. Means are provided for equalizing the pressure applied to a roller and its corresponding counter roller. Separate pneumatic casings and diaphragms may be provided for each piston rod, or several of the pressure rollers or countepressure rollers may be moved by a single diaphragm, which can be in the form of an elongated hose.
