  • Patent number: 4084497
Abstract: A refuse compactor structure wherein refuse collected in a flexible, outwardly opening container is compacted by downward movement of a ram thereagainst. The container is laterally supported during the compacting operation by an arrangement of walls substantially fully surrounding the container. The wall arrangement is constricted as a result of a preselected movement of the compacting ram to provide the desired lateral support during the compacting operation. The walls are retracted from the container as an incident of the ram being returned to a retracted position. The container is supported on a movable carrier which may be withdrawn through a front opening of an outer cabinet of the structure for introducing additional refuse into the container or for removing the container as for disposition of the compacted refuse. The carrier supports a door for selectively closing the front opening of the cabinet.

  • Patent number: 4073229
Abstract: A waste compacting apparatus includes a compactor housing with a vertically reciprocating ram mounted in its upper portion. A waste inlet is provided in the middle portion of the compactor housing for receiving waste, and the received waste is fed into a removable waste receptacle located in the lower portion of the compacting housing. Waste compaction takes place when the vertically reciprocating ram is driven down into the receptacle in the lower portion of the housing. The waste receptacle is horizontally slidable from a first position within the compactor housing, in which compacting takes place, to a second position outside the housing, during which the receptacle is unloaded. A vertically reciprocating sleeve is mounted within the housing, surrounding the ram, and has a waste inlet aperture in its upper portion.

  • Patent number: 4073228
Abstract: A trash compactor using a dolly as a receptacle for the trash to be compacted. The dolly is normally spring supported ready for movement into and out of the compactor, but when in the compactor and subjected to compacting pressure, the dolly is pressed downwardly, upon the beams of the main compactor frame which then takes the full compacting pressures.A novel construction of the dolly and compactor floor of the main frame makes such transfer of load possible. The compacting pressure is developed by four hydraulic cylinders, all of which are mounted on a common plate. The rod ends of the two center cylinders are connected to the top member of the main frame and the cylinder ends are connected to the common plate. The rod ends of the remaining two cylinders are connected to the main compacting plate with the cylinder ends mounted on the common plate. With the four cylinders mounted in this manner, twice the movement of the compacting ram is obtained.

  • Patent number: 4073227
Abstract: A trash compactor assembly including a cabinet supported upon a tubular framework and having an access opening in its front. A trash guide chute is disposed within the cabinet adjacent the opening for directing trash disposed therein downwardly so that it falls into a trash receptacle. The receptacle rests upon a base which is, in turn, connected to reaction arms which extend upwardly along the sides of the interior of the cabinet. The reaction arms support racks which are in meshing engagement with pinion gears connected to the respective ends of a shaft which is rotatably supported in a U-shaped drive frame. The U-shaped drive frame is slidably disposed within a box-like ram which is, in turn, suspended from the drive frame. Elastomeric blocks are disposed between the bottom of the drive frame and the bottom of the ram for compressing as the ram reaches a predetermined reaction force from the trash being compacted in the receptacle to provide a control signal.

Abstract: A selective spray device for use in a refuse compactor, or the like, arranged to provide selectively onto the refuse a deodorizing spray. The device includes a control for effecting automatically a spray of the refuse as an incident of movement of the receptacle into which the refuse is placed for compaction. A manually operable control permits a manual operation of the spray device when desired at any time. The control may further be arranged to prevent operation of the spray device notwithstanding movement of the receptacle. The spray may be provided as a pressurized fluid in a can having a suitable selectively operable valve. The valve actuator may be held fixed while the can itself is displaced to effect an opening of the valve. The control may include a slidable cam having associated therewith a manually operable handle. The selective opening of the valve may be effected by a lever pivotally mounted adjacent the cam and having a cam follower engaged by the cam.
