The tool includes an ultrasonic horn wherein the welding tip is moveable between a first position for welding of a tape to secure the tensioned loop about the plurality of articles and a second position wherein the welding tip is translated a distance from the first position to effect cutting of the tensioned loop from the stock of tape and to tack weld the loose cut end to the underlying tape of the loop to eliminate any protruding sharp edges. The tool additionally includes a belt drive mechanism for advancing the tape to the jaw assembly and for tensioning the tape following looping of the tape about the outside.

For facilitating the welder to push two strapping bands to positively abut against each other, an elastic presser located on one side of the tensioning wheel is used to gradually release strapping bands before welding.     Abstract: A method and apparatus automatically process currency documents. A stack of loose bank documents are placed on a feeder having a feeder arm which pushes the documents toward a continuous vacuum belt. The feeder arm is controlled by a lever arm connected to a potentiometer. The vacuum belt pulls documents from the stack, and moves the documents past a vacuum separator head and to a transport conveyor. The vacuum belt and the vacuum separator head are connected to the same vacuum supply. The transport conveyor moves the documents through inspection and sorting stations, and to various stacking units which stack the documents on platens. A strapping tape is curved to bend in a direction transverse to its length, and then a terminal end portion of the strapping tape is pushed through connected channels to direct the terminal end portion around three sides of a stack of the documents.

The lower pressure element further releases pressure while facilitating the placement and removal of the pieces of plastic strapping between the upper and lower pressure elements.

    Abstract: A tie gun for tying elongated bundles with a polymeric material tape loop, the loop having overlapped tape lengths, the overlapped material being welded with an ultra sonic horn, this horn embodying a horn tip end which with a clamp, and an anvil arrangement holds the loop in such way that a tape stock section just upstream of the weldment is weakened by horn operation disrupting at least some of the molecular orientation in the material so that the stock can be separated from the loop with an upstream directed pulling force applied to the tape stock resulting in a severance that leaves no objectionable protuberance or tab at the weldment. The tie gun also includes a quick release for freeing a tape build up in the gun incident a tape feed jam. A face of the clamp, face surfaces of the anvils and the horn tip end define a funnel envelope to facilitate tape stock feed to tape loop forming jaws on the gun at the outset of a tying cycle.

    Abstract: For connecting two band portions (11a, 11b) by friction welding, one band portion (11a) is pressed against an abutment (20) by a clamping jaw (24), and the other band portion (11b) is pressed against the abutment (20) by another clamping jaw (25). An oscillating jaw (26) is arranged between the clamping jaws for performing reciprocating movements transversely to the band (11) and thus welding the overlapping band portions (11a, 11b) to each other by friction welding. For preventing shear stresses between the oscillating jaw (26) and that clamping jaw (25) which holds the band portion (11b) entrained by the oscillating jaw, this clamping jaw (25) is driven in synchronism with the oscillating jaw (26) and with the same amplitude as the oscillating jaw (26). Facing the clamping jaw (25), there is arranged a smooth support face (23) for allowing sliding movement of the band (11) thereon.

    Abstract: A package strapping machine draws a thermoplastic strap off of a reel, loops the strap around a package, clamps a leading end of the strap, and then tightens the strap around the package with a strap tightening mechanism. A trailing end of the strap is cut underneath the leading end, and then both these ends are automatically welded together. When the strap is tightened, a portion of the strap is fed back towards the reel. The reel is provided with a device for rewinding this portion of the strap. A spiral spring stores energy from the rotation of the reel when the strap is drawn off, and when the strap is fed back the spiral spring causes the reel to rotate so as to rewind the strap. Because the strap is fed back towards the reel faster than the reel can rewind the strap, a loose strap portion accumulates between the reel and the strap tightening mechanism.

The strap-elevating member elevates the welded portion of the strap, slackened due to gentle tightening, from a point below to a point above the height of the strap-receiving element, with the result that the slackened, welded portion of the strap is held above the strap-receiving element as it returns to its original position. The strap thus does not impede the movement of the strap-receiving element.

    Abstract: A strapping machine for applying a band around an object includes a pool box in which slackened band is accumulated prior to be fed around an object by a main feed mechanism. The passage-forming structure contains a balance bar and an opposing guide arm. The balance bar is displaced by the band as the band accumulates in the passage. When the balance bar is displaced by a predetermined amount, a sensor shuts off the feed device. Thereafter, the guide arm is moved to a passage-enlarging position, whereupon the balance bar is permitted to return to its original position, enabling the feed device to resume its feeding of the band. The band thus accumulates within the enlarged passage.

    Abstract: An automatic binding apparatus produces a loop of tape and tightens the tape around an object that is inserted through the loop of tape. The apparatus has a bed-plate and a guide member which is swivelable into position on and off the bed-plate. Initially, the tape is guided through the guide member to form a small loop of tape. Thereafter the guide member is retracted and the loop of tape is enlarged by feeding more tape to the loop to accommodate large objects. Insertion of the object through the loop actuates a work detection switch and detection of the object produces an output signal which triggers a process whereby the tape is tightly bound around the object, is cut from the tape supply, and the ends of the tape are overlapped and pressure welded to one another. Removal of the bound object changes the state of the work detection switch and results in the repositioning of the guide member over the bed-plate and in the formation of a fresh loop of tape for a next object to be bound.
