The platens are carried by the base frame structure so that they may be moved relatively toward a compression zone to compress a cotton bale sufficiently to enable the bale tie wires to be applied. A plurality of elongated, wedge-shaped, bale compression members are provided on at least one of the platens. These bale compression members protrude outwardly from the platen where they are mounted to provide a compression area which is sufficiently small so that the cotton bale is compressed only in close proximity to the positions where a single bale tie is to be placed. A sufficient number of bale compression members are provided to facilitate the application of the ties required for the bale.

    Abstract: A newspaper bundler comprises a rigid frame assembly (FIGS. 1 and 2) for enabling newspapers to be easily stacked into a pile (12). A stack of paper bundling straps (26) is positioned on the crosswise portion. The channels each have a pocket for holding fan-folded end portions (30) of the stack of paper straps. One end portion of each strap is coated with adhesive (32) so when the end portions of a strap are pulled from their pockets, they can be attached together around the pile of papers to securely bundle them so that they can be carried easily with one hand (FIG. 5). The entire bundle is recyclable at a paper mill. In lieu of sheet metal side channels with pockets, the side pockets can be formed of tubular members (FIG. 6) bent and shaped to form pockets for the fan-folded ends of the straps.

When the ram extends, the knife and press platens move downwardly until the press platen engages the stack. Thereafter continued extension of the ram causes compression springs between the platens to contract so that the knife platen continues downwardly until it engages the press platen and the knives pass through the slots of the press platen into cutting engagement with the stack. Thereafter the knife and press platens continue downwardly together simultaneously compressing and slitting the stack.

    Abstract: Standard baler machines use a plurality of wires to tie the bales. Each wire is fed from a coil which is transported from the wire works in a paperboard carton which is rectangular in shape and appropriately scored on either of its two broad sides to enable the centers of the sides to be removed in circular cutouts. The lead end of the coil of wire is drawn out of one cutout and threaded through appropriate guides to the tie mechanism. The tail end of the coil is usually drawn out of the opposite cut-out and spliced to the lead end of a second coil in a second carton. The two cartons are usually installed back to back in a rack on the baler with a space between the adjacent broad sides. In accordance with the present invention, each carton is scored or otherwise weakened from the top of one cut-out, over the top of the carton to the top of the opposite cut-out.
