Abstract: An electric motor and hydraulic pump/motor are combined on a torque level, a press machine is controlled with controllability of an electric motor, and kinetic energy of a slide is regenerated during braking without constraints of slide pressurization or an amount of energy. A screw press drives a slide through a screw mechanism made up of a drive nut and a driven screw. The drive nut is provided with a ring gear integral therewith and this ring gear is engaged with a gear provided for a drive axis of an electric motor and a gear provided for the drive axis of a hydraulic pump/motor. The hydraulic pump/motor is connected to a constant high pressure source that generates a quasi-constant pressure hydraulic liquid and a low pressure source. This allows the electric motor and hydraulic pump/motor to be combined on a torque level.

  • Patent number: 6418841
Abstract: A system and method for compressing scrap metal. The scrap metal is compressed in a portable container. The container rests on two scales that rest above the ground surface. The fullness of the container is primarily evaluated based on the weight of the container. The scrap metal is initially delivered to a static compactor to which the container is mated. The compactor includes a ram that forces the scrap metal into and compresses the scrap metal in the container. The weight of the container is continually monitored while the container is mated to the compactor. The actuation of the ram is controlled so that, as the amount of scrap metal in the container increases, the frequency with which the ram is actuated increases. After the volume of scrap metal in the container increases above a certain level, each actuation of the ram actual comprises running the ram through plural extension and retraction cycles.

The apparatus in this invention is characterized by a platform, a pressing unit with at least one press head, and at least one laser projector for projecting a laser beam to form a light area. The press head presses the impressible element to form a pressure mark indicating the pressing position. The light area is then adjusted to match the pressure mark. Finally, the relative positioning of the platform and the pressing unit is adjusted to match the light area with the area to be pressed. Thus the pressing position will be accurate in the pressing process.

Abstract: A truss fabrication machine has processing circuitry for partially automating the fabrication of trusses. One or more workers place in jig stops on the tabletop a set of loose pre-cut truss members and the connector plates that get seated at the joints therebetween. The machine has a pressing head for seating the connector plates, which rides on a gantry above the tabletop in generally a Y-axis, wherein the gantry rides on a track generally along an X-axis. There are drivers to drive the gantry along the track and the pressing head along the gantry, as well an actuator for the pressing head. The processing circuitry is reliant on X- and Y-axis sensors for reckoning position on the tabletop. The processing circuitry is given control over the gantry, the pressing-head driver and actuator for coordinating movement of the gantry and pressing head between one given X and Y position to succeeding X and Y positions, and then actuating or not the actuating means.

A mechanical compensator is mounted integrally with the pressure applicator to enable the pressure applicator to compensate for any variations in the contour of the surface. The present invention also includes a control device for varying the pressure supplied to the pressure applicator that is ultimately applied to the surface.

  • Patent number: 5433097
Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling the stopping position of a press brake punch is provided. Hydraulic control is provided so that the variations in punch stopping positions due to variations in manifold valve response times are minimized. A variable displacement hydraulic pump and a solenoid valve are used in conjunction with manifold valves in order to precisely stop a press brake punch. When it is desired to stop the punch, the solenoid valve is shifted and pump output begins to decrease before the manifold valves begin to shift.

  • Patent number: 5386767
Abstract: An automatic control for a cotton module builder controls the traversing motor which moves the tamping mechanism in a horizontal direction atop the cotton module builder as well as the packing cylinder which moves a tamping platen up and down. The automatic controller operates continuously in predetermined cycles having adjustable durations. In a first portion of each predetermined cycle the tamping platen is moved up. In a second portion of each predetermined cycle the tamping platen is moved down to compress any cotton within the bin of the cotton module builder located directly below the tamping mechanism. In an overlap portion located about a transition between the first and second portions of each predetermined cycle, the traversing motor is activated to move the tamping mechanism in a predetermined direction for a predetermined distance so as to place the tamping platen over another portion of the bin.

  • Patent number: 5364539
Abstract: The device of the present invention removes suspended solids from a liquid medium, such as particles in an oil-based sludge. The device includes a filter chamber having an inlet for introducing liquid into the chamber, with the liquid containing suspended solids. The chamber also has an outlet for releasing filtered liquid which is substantially free from suspended solids. The liquid coming into the chamber is forced through a filter element to remove the suspended solids therefrom. The removed solids are compressed in the chamber by a reciprocating piston. When a sufficient quantity of suspended solids accumulate within the chamber, a discharge valve is opened and the compressed solids are discharged from the chamber. The device is operated automatically by a computer, which controls a series of operation cycles, including normal filtering operation, compression of solids, purging of solids, and cleansing of the filter element.
