Roller Fountain Patents (Class 101/148)
  • Patent number: 5865116
Abstract: An apparatus for continuously providing dampening fluid to a plate cylinder of a lithographic printing press includes a frame operatively connected to the printing press. A dampening fluid reservoir is attached. A pan roller is rotatably mounted in the frame and is disposed in contact with dampening fluid in the dampening fluid reservoir. A transfer roller set tangentially contacts and is parallel to the pan roller. The transfer roller is rotated by friction from the pan roller which is driven at a rotation speed proportional to the speed of the plate cylinder. An ink receptive oscillating roller having a resiliently compressible surface is tangentially contacting and parallel to the transfer roller. The oscillating roller is gear driven at a rotational speed proportional to the speed of the plate cylinder.

  • Patent number: 5699736
Abstract: A method and an apparatus for controlling the sheet supply in a sheet-processing printing machine, in particular a sheet-fed offset printing machine. In order that, at the beginning of printing, before which a specific process for predamping and/or preinking the plate and/or blanket cylinders takes place, a first sheet always runs into the printing zone precisely on completion of the process, provision is made for a first sheet to be conveyed by means of the engagement and renewed disengagement of the feeder into a predetermined position from which the number of machine revolutions up to reaching the first printing zone is known. The feeder is disconnected and the separator and pull suckers remain pressurized, thereby continuing to hold a sheet gripped. The process for predamping and/or preinking is then started, whereupon the reengagement of the feeder takes place precisely at that moment after which a first sheet then runs into the first printing zone precisely on completion of the process sequence.

Abstract: In a continuous dampening system, an oscillating distributor roller distributes ink/dampening fluid emulsion preferably over the form roller. The drive for causing distributing motion, back and forth along its axis of rotation, of the distributor roller is derived by friction drive to the roller surface and the support shaft of the distributor roller is also rotatably driven through appropriate gearing, thus rotation of the distributor roller is varied along with the rotational speed of the other rollers of the dampener, but the rate of longitudinal oscillation remains relative, since the speed of relative motion between the shaft and distributor roller itself increases or decreases proportionately as the press and dampener speed up and slow down.

The actuator assembly can be either an axial-type or rotation-type, depending on the press configuration and space restrictions.

  • Patent number: 5540145
Abstract: An apparatus for continuously providing dampening fluid to a plate cylinder of a lithographic printing press includes a frame operatively connected to the printing press. A dampening fluid reservoir is attached. A pan roller is rotatably mounted in the frame and is disposed in contact with dampening fluid in the dampening fluid reservoir. A transfer roller set tangentially contacts and is parallel to the pan roller. The transfer roller is rotated by friction from the pan roller which is driven at a rotation speed proportional to the speed of the plate cylinder. An ink receptive oscillating roller having a porous and compressible surface is tangentially contacting and parallel to the transfer roller. The oscillating roller is gear driven at a rotational speed proportional to the speed of the plate cylinder.

  • Patent number: 5454310
Abstract: A segmented oscillating fluid evaporator roller for removing excess moisture from the ink in the ink train or dampener system rollers of a printing press. The segmented oscillating roller consists of a hollow shaft having air slots along its length and into which pressurized air is admitted. Rotating and oscillating around the hollow shaft on bearings is a roller shell having roller segments attached thereon. Said roller segments run against and are frictionally driven by an inked roller in the press. Between the roller segments and through the roller shell are air orifices through which the pressurized air is expelled. The pressurized air may be heated to promote moisture evaporation. To ensure the air flows from the air slots of the hollow shaft to the air orifices of the roller shell there is an air channel tube. The air being expelled from the segmented oscillator roller can be directed to impinge on the surface of the driving roller by rotating the hollow shaft and air channel tube.
