After plate changing is completed, the press rollers can smoothly ascend regardless of their pressure, and can promptly and smoothly return to the state before plate changing.

  • Patent number: 6651557
Abstract: A printing unit comprises a pair of blanket cylinders (2) that form a nip through which a substrate can pass as ink images are transferred from the blanket cylinders to both sides of the substrate. Each blanket cylinder (2) is provided with a pair of plate cylinders (1A, 1B) carrying inked lithographic plates which transfer ink images to their respective blanket cylinder. While one plate cylinder (1A, 1B) is in contact with its blanket cylinder (2) the lithographic plates on the other plate cylinder (1A, 1B) can be changed. The other plate cylinder can then be brought into contact with the blanket cylinder (2) and the first plate cylinder removed from contact to allow its plates to be changed. The plate cylinders on one side of the substrate can be moved independently of those on the other side of the substrate. The blanket cylinders (2) can also be moved to release the substrate.

  • Patent number: 6553908
Abstract: A printing cylinder has a first rotatable section having a central image area on the surface, and a first and second end. A first shell is disposed circumferentially about the first end, and a second shell is disposed circumferentially about the second end, the first and second shells having image areas on the surface and movable axially with respect to the central image area. Also provided is a printing press comprising a first sensor for detecting register marks, a second sensor for detecting fanout, and a rotatable cylinder with a first section axially adjustable with respect to a second section. A method for correcting fanout in a web printing press includes sensing register marks to provide overall circumferential and/or lateral register adjustments of a printing cylinder, sensing a section of the web other than the register marks to provide fanout information, and changing a lateral position of a first part of the printing cylinder with respect to a second part of the printing cylinder.

Abstract: A printing unit for a web fed rotary printing machine is provided including a machine frame support, two sets of printing unit cylinders, carriages, drive motors and guide elements. The two sets of printing unit cylinders, include a plurality of outer printing unit cylinders and a plurality of inner printing unit cylinders. Each carriage corresponds to one printing unit cylinder for rotatably mounting its corresponding printing unit cylinder on the machine frame support. There is a drive motor for each carriage. Two sets of guide elements are arranged on the machine frame for determining a travel setting of the plurality of carriages along the machine frame support. The guide elements for the outer cylinders are arranged on the frame support in an orientation different than the guide elements for the inner cylinders so that movement of the outer printing unit cylinders is in a different direction than movement of the inner printing unit cylinders.

  • Patent number: 6526888
Abstract: A method for reducing vibrations in a printing press, the printing press having a first plate cylinder independently registrable from a second print cylinder. The method includes the steps of determining a lateral position of the first vibrator, roll with respect to the second vibrator roll and rotating the first plate cylinder with respect to the second plate cylinder so as to change the lateral position of the first vibrator roll with respect to the second vibrator roll. A printing press has a controller receiving an input from at least one sensor, the controller rotating the first plate cylinder with respect to the second plate cylinder so as to alter a phase between the first vibrator roll and the second vibrator roll as a function of the input.

Abstract: The printing-material web is guided in the same position and plane when the transfer cylinders are moved apart for the flying printing-plate change, so that contact between the web and the transfer cylinders and smearing are avoided, that is to say undesired contact with ink-carrying parts. When the transfer cylinders are moved apart, web-guiding elements at the web inlet and/or web outlet support the printing-material web on both sides during the plate or sleeve change by supporting elements which are narrow or act at points and can be displaced transversely with respect to the printing-material web. The printing-material web continues to be guided in the same position and plane, and smearing is avoided.

Abstract: An improved printing press includes a tubular-shaped printing blanket removably disposed on a blanket cylinder rotatably supported by a frame and having an outer circumferential surface. The printing blanket is disposed in rolling engagement with a conventional printing plate disposed on a plate cylinder having an axially extending gap in which opposite ends of the printing plate are secured. The printing blanket is removed by opening a portion of the frame and axially sliding the printing blanket off of the blanket cylinder. The blanket cylinder has passages which deliver a stream of air to the outer surface of the blanket cylinder which expands the inner circumferential surface of the printing blanket so that the blanket can be axially removed or inserted onto the blanket cylinder. The printing blanket has a metal inner surface which is tensioned by the blanket cylinder to retain the printing blanket on the blanket cylinder during operation of the press.
