  • Patent number: 4898094
Abstract: An apparatus and method for controlling a plurality of connected continuous paper printing machines connected in series prevent difference in rotational speeds of the connected printing machines from causing the paper between the printing machines from piling up or tearing. Signal generators count the number of sheets of continuous paper entering each printing machine. The difference in the number of sheets entering each printing machine is calculated and compared to preset upper and lower limits. If an upstream printing machine turns faster than a downstream printing machine, slack will develop in the paper between the printing machines, and the difference between the sheets entering the upstream printing machine and sheets entering the downstream printing machine will be a (+) value. When a preset upper limit is reached, a controller will temporarily stop the upstream printing machine until the downstream printing machine takes up all the slack.

  • Patent number: 4602562
Abstract: A flexographic printing press comprising a plurality of inking units and plate cylinders and at least one impression cylinder, which is driven by a coaxial central gear in mesh with the gears of the plate cylinders rotatably mounted on plate cylinder carriages, which are adapted to move toward and away from the impression cylinder on tracks provided in the machine frame. That printing press is characterized in that each plate cylinder gear has a projection or hub provided on its periphery with angularly spaced detent bores equal in number to the plate cylinders and disposed on respective axially spaced peripheral lines. The plate cylinder carriages have detent pins, which are axially or angularly movable and are disposed in respective radial planes and are offset relative to each other so that each pin is adapted to enter that detent bore of that plate cylinder, which has a detent bore at a corresponding axial location.

  • Patent number: 4596186
Abstract: Mechanism for correcting the twist of a plate on a printer without removing the plate from a plate cylinder is proposed. A bracket having claws for holding one end of the plate is supported on a block with pins on the block received in oblique grooves formed in the bracket. When the block moves axially, the bracket will be skewed because it is prevented from moving axially. Accordingly the plate is skewed in such a direction as to eliminate any twist.

  • Patent number: 4581993
Abstract: A device for adjusting the plate or blanket cylinders in a rotary printing press automatically moves the cylinders to predetermined positions for clamping or unclamping the plate or blanket. A memory stores predetermined set values for cylinder position, which are addressed by a triggering unit in response to operation selections. An angle coder senses the actual value of the cylinder position which is compared to the set values obtained from the memory to generate a control signal for adjusting a cylinder drive motor. In a preferred embodiment, the memory also stores the direction for rotating the cylinders as well as a number of cylinder movement steps for plate and blanket clamping and unclamping sequences.

  • Patent number: 4573408
Abstract: To permit relative angular shifting of transmission of rotation between the first gear (1) and a second gear (2), to thereby control the register of a cylinder coupled to the second gear (2) with respect to printing cylinders coupled to the first gear, a third gear (3) is drivingly connected between the first gear (1) and the second gear. The third gear is journalled to rotate about an eccentric portion (6) of a shaft element (9), the shaft element 9 being secured for rocking movement about a central axis (10), from which the eccentric axis (11) is offset. The central axis (10) of the shaft element (9, 6) and the centers of rotation (12, 13) of the first and second gears, respectively, are positioned on a theoretical plane, or line (16) and when the eccentric axis (11) is also located on this theoretical line (16) a normal position is defined.

  • Patent number: 4572073
Abstract: A system for remote sensing, indicating and remote control provides for the non-smear guidance of sheets through a sheet-fed machine and is especially useful for printing machines which print on both sides of the sheets. Sheet guides are adjustable during machine operation from a control panel at a central location outside of the machine. The positions of the sheet guides are preferably displayed in direct comparison with zones of ink application. Also, the sheet guides are adjustable from the control panel so that the guides fall within the gaps between printed areas on the sheet. An immediate and graphic check of the sheet guides is provided.

Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for registering a perfecting offset printing unit to a reference perfecting offset printing unit while minimizing displacement between associated non-print gap areas. The circumferential position of the upper printing plate and the lower printing plate of the unit to be registered is monitored with respect to their associated blankets. The print registration between the unit to be registered and the reference unit is monitored. Printing position changes for the upper printing couple and the lower printing couple of the unit to be registered that are needed to effect registration with the reference unit are determined. A circumferential bias is determined responsive to the determined printing position changes needed and responsive to the monitored circumferential position of the upper printing plate and the lower printing plate.

  • Patent number: 4553478
Abstract: A system for presetting register and color zone adjusting devices in a multi-color rotary printing machine uses digitally-driven optical scanners axially traversing the plate cylinders under control of at least one numerical computer. Machine-specific characteristics are programmed in non-volatile memory as referenced values. Data processing is not required to be conducted external to the printing machine. The system is compact and requires practically no re-adjustment or entry of desired values from the machine operator. The machine operator, however, may enter coordinates for printing areas on the printing plate in order to speed up the scanning process for determining the initial color zone preset. The scanner multi-functionally scans the printing plate for both register adjustment and for integrating the ratio of printing to non-printing area for each inking zone.

Abstract: The printing machine has a multi-color offset printing unit, behind this a sheet conveying device, and an intaglio printing unit to which the sheets printed and provided with register marks in the first printing unit are transferred by the conveying device. The conveying device comprises a detector system responding to these register marks, and a register drum. Each of the two printing units and the register drum have their own drive mechanisms mechanically independent of each other. The drive mechanism for the second printing unit is controlled in dependence upon the speed of the first printing unit, and the drive mechanism for the register drum is controlled on the one hand in dependence upon the speed of the second printing unit and on the other hand in dependence upon the register deviation measured in the circumferential direction. Further, on the register drum are disposed devices for correcting side register and any skew of a sheet in dependence upon the measured register deviations.
