Patent number: 9902146Abstract: A system and method for aligning a generally flat, planar object and for facilitating the mounting of the generally flat planar object, such as a printing plate, in near perfect alignment in a cylindrical manner. A printing plate cylinder is covered with stickyback having a release liner. A narrow axial strip of release liner is removed and replaced with a piece of release liner that may be pulled or tugged from beyond the end of the printing cylinder. The printing plate is next rolled into a cylindrical form and held in place on a device which allows registration marks on the printing plate to align the two ends of the printing plate prior to the printing plate ends being temporarily adhered to one another using a piece of tape or similar product. The aligned printing plate is next slid over the printing cylinder which is covered with sticky back.Type: GrantFiled: January 29, 2014Date of Patent: February 27, 2018Assignee: Gerald J. Patent number: 8943967Abstract: A method of mounting and adjusting a printing plate on a plate cylinder of a multicolor offset printing press is described. The printing plate is clamped between front and rear clamping bars, the rear clamping bar being movable under the application of a tensioning force and occupying, upon clamping of the trailing end of the printing plate, a tension-release position. Tensioning of the printing plate is carried out by initially applying a nominal tensioning force to the rear clamping bar. A print register of the tensioned printing plate is then measured and compared to a target print register to determine a corrected tensioning position of the rear clamping bar corresponding to the target print register. The tension of the printing plate is thereafter released. The correct tensioning position is set as new reference position of the rear clamping bar before or after tensioning again the printing plate.Type: GrantFiled: July 2, 2012Date of Patent: February 3, 2015Assignee: Koenig & Bauer AktiengesellschaftInventors: Michael Hans, Patrick Kress, Volkmar Rolf Schwitzky

A U-shaped retaining clip is received within the second shallow slot in the universal edge strip at one end of the carrier sheet and is hooked to an undercut lip on the flexographic printing cylinder. As noted, both leading and trailing edges of the carrier sheet include a universal edge strip.Type: GrantFiled: January 5, 2000Date of Patent: November 20, 2001Assignee: Dynamic Dies, Inc.Inventor: Kevin W. Patent number: 6267054Abstract: A retainer for holding a printing plate to the cylindrical surface of a vacuum drum has a curved surface which conforms to and seals against the cylindrical surface of the drum. The retainer is held in place by pressure differential. An edge portion of a printing plate is received below a lip which extends along the retainer. The retainer is light in weight and therefore does not significantly unbalance the drum even if it is not always in the same position on the drum. The retainer is also inexpensive to manufacture and less likely than prior art clamps to cause damage if it fails.Type: GrantFiled: March 12, 1999Date of Patent: July 31, 2001Assignee: Creo Products Inc.Inventor: Fernando Lopes

Patent number: 5816160Abstract: In order to prevent a stamp plate or a stencil plate from falling off or shifting on. a stamp unit, and to simplify operations for exchanging the stamp plate (stencil plate) during stamping operations or stencil-producing operations, a support body is formed with rail portions. The rail portions are C-shaped in cross section. Holding pawl portions are formed along lengthwise edges of the rail portions. The stamp plate is held in a recess of a backside reinforcement. When the stamp plate held in this manner is inserted in a space between the pair of rail portions, the holding pawl portions hold the lengthwise edge surfaces of a stamp surface of the stamp plate, and also the rail portions support the backside reinforcement so the stamp plate will not fall off.Type: GrantFiled: May 12, 1997Date of Patent: October 6, 1998Assignee: Brother Kogyo Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Hiroshi Taira, Mitsunobu Suda

Patent number: 5722320Abstract: The invention includes a self-aligning die platen assembly for use with a cooperating die platen assembly to form a die set. The self-aligning die platen assembly comprises a die shoe and a platen having a working face for operational cooperation with a corresponding working face of the cooperating die platen assembly. The platen is mounted in the die shoe and has a freely rockable condition therein which permits the platen to be moved into an aligned operational position in which its working face conforms to the corresponding working face of the cooperating die platen when the assemblies are closed. The die platen assembly also includes a locking element for securely maintaining the self-aligning platen in the operational position. A preferred locking device includes a low temperature melting alloy.Type: GrantFiled: December 13, 1996Date of Patent: March 3, 1998Assignee: Kemet CorporationInventor: David Thomas Meyer

Patent number: 5715752Abstract: A device for drawing a printing plate onto a plate cylinder of a printing machine is disclosed. In order to precisely position the folding strip relative to the printing cylinder during the drawing-on procedure, the folding strip of the device is provided with two pairs of adjustable stops. When inserting the printing plate into the clamping rail, a pair of adjustable clamping stops position the folding strip relative to the plate cylinder so that the leading edge of the printing plate is precisely aligned with the clamping rail. On the other hand, when inserting the printing plate into the tension rail, a pair of tensioning stops position the folding rail relative to the plate cylinder so that the trailing edge of the printing plate is bent to the precise angle necessary for its introduction into the tension rail.Type: GrantFiled: February 16, 1996Date of Patent: February 10, 1998Assignee: MAN Roland Druckmaschinen AGInventors: Michael Rother, Helmut Schild

Patent number: 5711222Abstract: A method and for mounting a flat printing plate on a cantilevered plate cylinder of a printing press, particularly in a lithographic web-fed rotary printing press. The printing plate is bent into an essentially cylindrical shape and inserted into a hollow tube. The tube and plate are slid from the side over a mandrel mounted on the plate cylinder. The mandrel expands the printing plate to a condition where the mandrel has an outer diameter which is smaller than the inner diameter of the tube and which is larger than the outer diameter of the plate cylinder. The tube and printing plate are slid down the length of the plate cylinder, and the ends of the plate are then locked using a lock-up device. The tube is then removed from the plate cylinder. Air bearings may be used on the mandrel or the plate cylinder, and the mandrel may be expandable.Type: GrantFiled: June 14, 1996Date of Patent: January 27, 1998Assignees: Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG, Heidelberg Harris, Inc.Inventors: Matthew Alan Taylor, Gregory William Weiss, John Joseph Dowling
