Breech End Structure Patents (Class 102/469)
  • Patent number: 11788825
Abstract: The present invention provides a primer insert for a polymer ammunition cartridge. The primer insert has a top surface opposite a bottom surface. The top surface has a primer recess defined therein, which is in fluid communication with the propellant chamber of the ammunition cartridge through a flash hole defined through the bottom surface. A groove is defined in the primer recess and surrounds the flash hole. A planar portion of the bottom surface surrounding the flash hole is connected to a vertical coupling element by a transition region. The transition region has a first and second concave portions positioned around a transition protrusion. An extraction flange is formed about the top surface.

  • Patent number: 11519702
Abstract: A cartridge includes a cartridge case having a shell having a first end portion, a second end portion opposite the first end portion and a cylindrical body extending from the first end portion to the second end portion. A reinforcing cap includes a base, a sidewall extending from the base and surrounding the first end portion such that the first edge of the shell abuts an inner face of the base, and a projection extending from the inner face. A ring is pressed against the inner face and forms an air-tight seal between the projection, the inner face, the ring, and the first end portion of the shell. A plurality of indentations form protrusions in the sidewall and the first end portion for interlocking the reinforcing cap to the shell and retaining the ring against the inner face of the base.

  • Patent number: 9021960
Abstract: An isolated, coaxial, high pressure feed-through fitting provides two electrical paths through a barrier. The fitting includes an outer dielectric disposed in an opening in the barrier. A conductive housing with a central through bore is disposed in the outer dielectric. An inner dielectric is disposed in the through bore in the conductive housing. A central conductor is disposed in the inner dielectric. One electrical path includes the central conductor and another electrical path includes the conductive housing. Flanged portions on the conductive housing and the central conductor bear on flanged portions of the outer dielectric and the inner dielectric, respectively, to create a high pressure seal.

  • Patent number: 8978559
Abstract: A base insert for a cartridge case comprises a base end having a lip and a groove proximate the lip and having a primer pocket defined in the base end and an insert end having a base wall and a cylindrical wall extending there from, the base wall and cylindrical wall defining a powder fill pocket. The base wall has a flash hole disposed therein and an inner surface facing the powder fill pocket. The cylindrical wall has an inner surface intersecting with the inner surface of the base wall and an outer surface defining the outer circumference of the base insert. The intersection of the inner surface of the base wall and the inner surface of the cylindrical wall is curved or forms an oblique angle, while the outer surface of the insert end is not curved and does not form an oblique angle.

  • Publication number: 20150027019
Abstract: The firearm cartridge has an upper chamber adapted to house gunpowder and a bullet, a lower pocket adapted to house a primer, and a flash hole extending there between. The lower pocket has a ledge disposed generally perpendicularly to the flash hole. The flash hole is formed with a perimeter wall that has a convex curvature adjacent to the ledge of the primer pocket. Likewise, a percussion nipple adapted for use in a black powder rifle has an elongated bore formed with relatively larger and smaller diameter portions connected by a shoulder, and the shoulder has a convex curvature adjacent to the larger diameter portion of the bore. The tool for forming the foregoing shapes has a tip provided with a concave curved surface corresponding to the convex curvature of the flash hole perimeter wall on the cartridge or to the convex curvature of the shoulder in the elongated bore of the percussion nipple.

  • Patent number: 8925463
Abstract: A high velocity munition comprises a projectile, mounted on a cartridge case, that can be fired from an automatic cannon or weapon. During storage or transport an IM venting device included in the cartridge case prevents the propellant charge from firing the projectile, leaving the cartridge damaged, but intact upon premature ignition. The IM vent exhaust channel is filled with a solid fusible material that melts at a lower temperature than the ignition temperatures of the igniter (or primer) and the propellant charge of the projectile. At least one non-fusible, ruptureable member is included in the IM vent channel and positioned to provide structural integrity to the fusible material in the channel. Alternatively or in addition to the fusible material, a shape memory alloy ring surrounds the igniter (or primer) and separates from the cartridge when the cartridge reaches a temperature that causes auto-ignition.

  • Publication number: 20140318404
Abstract: A long-range precision firearm cartridge case including a cylindrical body portion with a head end and an opposite end, the cylindrical body portion having a central aperture extending into the head end for receipt of a primer, and the cylindrical body portion having a cartridge extraction groove formed around the periphery of the body portion adjacent the head end. The case including a cylindrical neck portion and a frusto-conical shoulder portion integrally formed with the body portion and the neck portion. The shoulder portion tapers radially inwardly from the opposite end of the body portion to the cylindrical neck portion. The neck portion extends longitudinally from the shoulder portion to define a projectile receiving end. The frusto-conical shoulder portion is constructed to form a shoulder angle with a longitudinal axis of the body portion, the shoulder angle being greater than 30 degrees and no greater than ninety degrees.

  • Patent number: 8869701
Abstract: The present invention describes an improved cartridged projectile (100). The cartridged projectile (100) comprises a projectile (110) seating at a mouth of a cartridge case (130). The cartridge case (130) has a base (134) that houses a high pressure chamber (150). A side of the high pressure chamber (150) is capped by a pressure disc (170), which is secured onto the base of the cartridge case by a nozzle ring (160). The nozzle ring (160) has a tapered or conical surface that allows the pressure disc (170) to flex, and a surface (171) of the pressure disc (170) exterior of the high pressure chamber has intersecting V-shaped grooves (172). When propellant in the high pressure chamber (150) is burned efficiently, high pressure gases developing inside the high pressure chamber cause the pressure disc (170) to rupture at a predetermined pressure along the grooves (172) so that the gases propel the projectile (110) out of a barrel at a higher speed of about 100 m/s or more.
