Abstract: Systems and methods for use in carrying out rail track corrections. A projector device is positioned on a vehicle deployed ahead of a rail maintenance vehicle and includes a Fresnel lens and a plurality of light emitting diodes arranged to provide a light beam that provides a uniform “spot.” The projector device modulates the light beam in such a manner that a pair of receiver receivers disposed on the rail maintenance vehicle can detect the light source and the light intensity and frequency of wavelength of light received into each receiver of a receiver pair is substantially equal. Recorded values may be used to triangulate the geometry of the section of track being worked, while a computer compares the previous section of track already corrected to the current section and makes calculations for desired corrections to be made at work heads on the rail maintenance vehicle.

Abstract: The invention refers to a machine and a method used to level, align and stabilise the track and compact the ballast bed, producing controlled lifting, so that the load used in the settlement of the rail in its theoretical position falls within the established range, working in an uninterrupted manner. The machine is constituted by two bogies with traction capacity, and front, back and centre control cabins and a rear and frontal measuring tensioner trolleys. The machine has an additional lifting unit whose relative movement with the rest of the machine in controlled by total longitudinal cylinder. The alignment cylinders generate a transversal movement to cause track alignment. Behind this unit according to the direction of work a stabilising unit is situated which consists of two stabilising trolleys. The ground-penetrating radar is situated at the machine front.

Abstract: Transition spirals for successive sections of railroad track with different degrees of curvature are designed by first specifying the manner in which the bank angle of the track should change with distance along a transition spiral. Functional forms for bank angle are provided as a function of distance along the spiral, which can also be used in traditional conceptual frameworks, and interpreted in that context to define track curvature as a function of distance. Also included are functional forms obtained by raising the longitudinal axis about which bank angle change takes place so that the axis is above the plane of the track. The resulting transition spirals reduce the transient lateral accelerations to which passengers are subjected when passenger vehicles traverse the spirals and reduce the damaging transient lateral forces that heavy freight locomotives and freight cars apply to the track structure near the ends of the spirals.

  • Patent number: 6474241
Abstract: A machine for removing an old track and for simultaneously laying a new track on a ballast bed, which comprises a first tie transport apparatus for receiving the old ties, and a second tie transport apparatus for delivering new ties and laying the new ties. A lifting device may be selectively placed in an operating position on the first or the second tie transport apparatus for insertion between the ballast bed and an old tie for engaging the old tie and lifting it off the ballast bed. This may be done by selectively coupling the lifting device to a respective tie transport apparatus, or by driving the lifting device on each tie transport apparatus between operative and inoperative positions.

  • Patent number: 6463858
Abstract: A rail tie replacement apparatus that includes a frame having a first side associated with a first side of a railroad track, and a second side associated with a second side of a railroad track; gripping mechanisms disposed on each of the sides of the frame and configured for grasping rail ties located in the track; and extending members attached to the gripping mechanisms and the frame. The extending members include a first extending member and a second extending member in a non-axial relationship to each other, and configured for positioning the gripping mechanisms relative to the rail ties. The apparatus further includes fluid powered cylinders attached to the extending members and the frame that are configured to facilitate the reciprocal movement of the extending members.

Abstract: A track renewal machine includes an elongate machine frame supported by undercarriages on the track and having front and rear frame parts connected by a frame joint. In an upper region, the frame parts are interconnected by a drive by which the frame parts can be spread apart and raised in a vertical direction at the frame joint. A rotatable endless ballast clearing device is mounted between tie lifting and tie laying devices which are mounted on the machine frame between the undercarriages. A first conveyor cooperates with the ballast clearing device for transporting away removed ballast, and a second conveyor for transporting ballast has a discharge end arranged between the ballast clearing device and the tie laying device. A ballast discharge device is associated with the discharge end of the second conveyor, and a vertically adjustable ballast planing device is arranged between the ballast clearing and tie laying devices.

Abstract: A track maintenance vehicle having a workhead that is pivotally mounted to the superstructure at its upper end. The workhead includes a blowing tube mounted at its lower end and a vertical cylinder that is selectively extendable and retractable to control the height of the blowing tube. The vehicle includes a control system that controls the height of the blowing tube as well as the left/right and fore/aft positions of the workhead. The track maintenance vehicle further includes an automated height control system that automatically extends and retracts the vertical cylinder to position the blowing tube at a uniform height despite its lateral disposition.

  • Patent number: 6308635
Abstract: A rail heating assembly including a series of individual heating modules is operable to raise and maintain the temperature of rails of a railroad track to reduce bending and deforming of the rails due to variations of atmosphere conditions. The heating module includes a series of burners with attached radiator plates so as to provide convective and radiant energy to heat the rails. The heating module includes an outer shell and a Venturi-shaped inner shell to surround the rail, with a series of burners attached to one end providing a stratified flame to heat the rail. A series of radiator plates mounted to the inner shell are heated by the flame, and the radiator plates radiate thermal energy towards the rail.

Abstract: A machine for tamping ballast underneath a railroad track includes a machine frame extending in a longitudinal direction and supported on the track by undercarriages for mobility in an operating direction. A tamping unit and a track lifting and lining unit cooperate with one another and are mounted on the machine frame. A suction apparatus is provided for aspirating ballast and includes a suction line connected to a ballast suction nozzle which is associated with the tamping unit. Drives are provided for adjusting the ballast suction nozzle vertically and transversely to the longitudinal direction. A ballast plow is mounted on the machine frame, and a discharge chute is provided for ejecting ballast onto the track. In this manner, short sections of track exhibiting inferior ballast conditions can be ballasted and tamped.

  • Patent number: 6220169
Abstract: The invention relates to a method of placing, positioning and fastening railroad sections on railroad rail sections (1) on a number of mutually adjacent and mutually spaced, loose railroad sleepers (2a, 2b), with the aid of a pulling vehicle (7) which functions to pull a rail section (1) from a first railroad wagon (4) into abutment with said sleepers, via a second railroad wagon (5). Rail sections (1) pulled from the wagon by said vehicle (7) are moved linearly at a distance (a) above the sleepers (2a, 2b) with the aid of a number of devices (10, 10a, 10b). This linear movement is adapted so that the trailing end-surface (1′) of the pulled rail section will be positioned adjacent a leading end-surface (1″) of an earlier laid rail section. In this position of the rail section, one or more of said devices (10, 10a, 10b) is/are activated to lower the rail section (1) onto rail-adapted, sleeper-associated fastener elements (81-84).
