Abstract: This invention includes improvements to a method for forming a chemical conversion coating on ferrous metal substrates, to the chemical solutions used in the coating and to the articles coated thereby. A first oxidation applies a molecular iron/oxygen-enriched intermediate coating, such as a dicarboxylate or phosphate, to a ferrous substrate. A coloring procedure (a second oxidation) follows the first oxidation procedure, using a heated oxidizing solution that reacts with the iron and oxygen enriched intermediate coating to form magnetite (Fe3O4). The result is the formation of a brown or black finish. An appropriate rust preventive topcoat may seal the substrate. The finish affords protection, a degree of lubricity to aid assembly, break-in of sliding surfaces, provides anti-galling protection and an adherent base for paint finishes.

  • Patent number: 6899769
Abstract: This invention is a method for forming a chemical conversion coating on ferrous metal substrates, the chemical solutions used in the coating and the articles coated thereby. By modifying and combining the features of two existing, but heretofore unrelated, coating technologies, a hybrid conversion coating is formed. Specifically, a molecular iron/oxygen-enriched intermediate coating, such as a dicarboxylate or phosphate, is applied to a ferrous substrate by a first oxidation. The intermediate coating pre-conditions the substrate to form a surface rich in molecular iron and oxygen in a form easily accessible for further reaction. This oxidation procedure is followed by a coloring procedure using a heated (about 120-220 F) oxidizing solution containing alkali metal hydroxide, alkali metal nitrate, alkali metal nitrite or mixtures thereof, which reacts with the iron and oxygen enriched intermediate coating to form magnetite (Fe3O4).

  • Patent number: 6559204
Abstract: An autodepositing liquid composition comprises dispersed non-film-forming polymer particles in addition to the dispersed film forming polymer characteristic of all autodepositing liquid compositions. Preferably, the non-film-forming polymer particles are gas-tight microballoons filled with a gas such as air and have an average particle size less than 1 &mgr;m. Such particles act in the autodepositing liquid compositions and in the dried coatings formed from them as opaque white pigments, unless the coatings are heated above about 130° C., if so heated, the coatings, unless they contain other heat stable pigment, become irreversibly transparent.

Abstract: An anti-corrosive sol-gel that is a combination of an organometallic salt, an organosilane, and a borate, phosphate, or zinc functional component. The organosilane component may be selected from a large group of equivalent compounds but is preferably an alkoxyzirconium salt, and most preferably Zr (IV) n-propoxide. The organosilane may also be selected from a large group of equivalent compounds, but is preferably 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GTMS). Combination of the components takes place in the presence of an organic catalyst, preferably acetic acid.

  • Publication number: 20030019391
Abstract: A corrosion inhibitor is described which includes several supramolecular oxo-anion compositions useful for preventing the propagation of pit corrosion on aluminum and aluminum alloys. The oxo-anion compositions preferably include soluble polymeric oxidic acids comprising combinations of molybdenum, phosphorous, tungsten, and silicon. These compositions are useful as corrosion inhibitors in high-moisture, corrosive environments, such as radiators and cooling systems. For low-moisture environments, these oxo-anion compositions can be reacted with a counter-ion, such as various metals, including, but not limited to the rear earth metals, to form a soluble salt. The salt can then be adsorbed onto a carrier, such as paint pigments, which can then be applied to the surfaces of aluminum and aluminum alloys. These surface adsorbates then become sparingly soluble and are gradually released over time in the presence of an aqueous corrosive agent so as to prevent propagation of pit corrosion.

  • Patent number: 6447589
Abstract: The present invention has for its object to provide a method of producing a water-base resin composition for rust-preventive coating which is suited for metal-coated steel panels, particularly galvanized steel panels, and despite the absence of chromium therein, is capable of imparting high corrosion resistance to coated metals, with the additional advantage of improved storage stability, and to a water-base resin composition as obtained by the above production method. The production technology according to the present invention is a method of producing a water-base resin composition for rust-preventive coating which comprises reacting a water-base resin composition containing, in each liter thereof, 10 to 500 g of water-dispersible silica and 0.02 to 20 g of a silane coupling agent and/or a hydrolytic condensation product thereof at a temperature of not less than 50° C. and not over the boiling temperature thereof, and the water-base resin composition as obtainable by the above production method.
