Abstract: An iridescent lustrous composite which can simulate the appearance of mother-of-pearl comprises a substrate comprising a transparent or translucent plastic which has been pigmented with a metal oxide coated mica pigment and the substrate carries on at least one of its surfaces a transparent thermoplastic resinous laminate film of at least ten very thin and generally parallel layers of transparent thermoplastic resinous materials, the contiguous layers differing in refractive index by at least about 0.03 and in which the layer at each external surface of the laminate film has a thickness which is greater than the thickness of any one of the multiple very thin layers.
Abstract: A method of producing a layered lattice silicate which is surface modified with an organic material wherein said silicate in substantially dry, particulate form is contacted with an organic monomer, co-monomers or a prepolymer, and surface polymerization or reaction in situ on the silicate in the presence of a gaseous hydrogen atmosphere is effected.
Abstract: Mineral particles are surface treated with an alkali metal silicate, hydrogen peroxide, an acid, or an organophosphorus compound. A preferred surface treating method utilizes sodium silicate in aqueous solution at pH greater than 9, followed by neutralization with acid to precipitate a silica coating onto surface portions of the particles. The mineral particles are preferably alumina particles. The surface-treated alumina particles may be incorporated into fluoride dentifrices or compounded with halogenated hydrocarbons and polymeric resins to form flame-retardant polymer compounds.

Abstract: Dispersed insoluble colored pigments are coated on the surface of mica and oxide-coated mica pigments by deposition in a precipitate of a polyvalent cation and an anionic polymeric substance. The resulting combination pigments have more than one color, depending on the angle of viewing.
