Publication number: 20030010459Abstract: Cationically modified white pigments (W) in particulate form, essentially consisting of a particulate inorganic white pigment (M) of a particle size in the range of 0, 1 to 40 &mgr;m and an applied water soluble, cationic, crosslinked polymer (PA) containing quaternary ammonium groups in salt form, obtainable by reaction of epichlorohydrin or of epichlorohydrin derivatives or precursors with amines, under conditions leading to at least partial crosslinking, optionally in combination with an anionic optical brightener (B) and where the molar ratio of (B) to (PA) is such that the number of cationic charges of the total polymer (PA) is higher than the number of anionic charges of the total anionic optical brightener (B), are surprisingly useful as cationic white pigments in various fields of technique, especially in papermaking.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 17, 2002Publication date: January 16, 2003Inventors: John Martin Farrar, Andrew Clive Jackson, Alec Stewart Tindal

Patent number: 6471762Abstract: Colored lustrous pigments of superior quality are prepared by dry blending a platy substrate such as a metal oxide-coated mica nacreous pigment and a hydrophobic colorant at low shear. The resulting blend exhibits a well dispersed, stable coloration, increased hydrophobicity and is particularly useful in industrial and automotive applications. The technique can also be employed to prepare pigments for cosmetic application.Type: GrantFiled: August 23, 2000Date of Patent: October 29, 2002Assignee: Engelhard Corp.Inventors: Carmine Vincent DeLuca, Jr., Jeannine M. Patent number: 6444313Abstract: A thermochromic acrylic synthetic fiber comprising an acrylonitrile polymer in which a thermochromic pigment composition with an average particle diameter of from 0.5 &mgr;m to 30 &mgr;m is dispersedly contained in an amount of from 0.5% by weight to 40% by weight based on the weight of the polymer, and being made into fibers; the pigment composition containing (a) an electron-donating color-developing organic compound, (b) an electron-accepting compound and (c) a reaction medium that determines the temperature at which the color-developing reaction of the both compounds takes place. Also disclosed are a processed article of the above thermochromic acrylic synthetic fiber, and a process for producing the thermochromic acrylic synthetic fiber.Type: GrantFiled: January 5, 2001Date of Patent: September 3, 2002Assignee: The Pilot Ink Co., Ltd.Inventors: Yoshiaki Ono, Naoya Ishimura, Yutaka Shibahashi

Patent number: 6420437Abstract: A neutral titanium dioxide colloid sol having a high stability in a neutral range and capable of forming a colorless transparent coating even when dried at room temperature is produced by mixing an acid titanium dioxide sol comprising 50 to 100 parts by weight of titanium dioxide colloidal particles and 5 to 50 parts by weight of a chelating agent for titanium ions with 1 to 50 parts by weight of an alkaline substance comprising at least one of alkali metal compounds and amine compounds, and optionally by adjusting the pH value of the liquid mixture to 5 to 10, or adjusting the pH value of the liquid mixture to 6 to 10, and then applying a deionization treatment to the mixture to thereby charge the titanium dioxide colloidal particles with negative electricity.Type: GrantFiled: July 26, 2000Date of Patent: July 16, 2002Assignee: Nihon Parkerizing Co., Ltd.Inventors: Kazuhiko Mori, Mitsuru Nakamura, Masanobu Tanaka

Patent number: RE41858Abstract: A pearlescent pigment based on a metal oxide-coated, platelet-shaped substrate and a top layer on the metal oxide layer, where the top layer comprises silicon dioxide, at least one further metal hydroxide or metal oxide hydrate and at least one organic coupling reagent. The further metal hydroxides or metal oxide hydrates are hydroxides or oxide hydrates of cerium, aluminum or zirconium, or mixtures thereof. The coupling reagents employed are organofunctional silanes, zirconium aluminates or metal acid esters.Type: GrantFiled: October 7, 2009Date of Patent: October 26, 2010Assignee: Merck Patent Gesellschaft MIT Beschrankter HaftungInventors: Joachim Duschek, Ralf Glausch
