Abstract: A modified carbon product is described which comprises carbon having attached at least one organic group wherein the organic group comprises a) at least one aromatic group or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkyl group, and b) a group having the formula -AG-Sp-LG-Z, wherein AG is an activating group, Sp is a spacer group, LG is a leaving group, and Z is a counterion, and wherein the aromatic or the C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkyl group is directly attached to the carbon, and wherein the organic group is present in any amount. The present invention also relates to ink and coating compositions comprising these modified carbon products.
Abstract: An improved asphalt having enhanced settling properties. The asphalt includes crumb rubber particles which have been treated to produce a greater number of carboxylic sites on the surface of the crumb rubber. These carboxylic sites interact with the functional groups in the asphalt, resulting in a homogeneous mixture having improved separation characteristics as well as the improved rheological properties due to the inclusion of the crumb rubber particles.
Abstract: A method for coloring cementitious systems using compacted inorganic granules, wherein said compacted inorganic granules comprise an inorganic pigment and a dispersing agent. Particularly, a method for coloring cementitious systems using compacted inorganic granules; wherein said compacted inorganic granules are produced by a process consisting of: (a) mixing an inorganic pigment and a dispersing agent, (b) compacting the mixture, (c) milling the compacted mixture, and (d) classifying the compacted mixture into at least one oversize material stream, at least one undersize material stream and at least one product stream of compacted inorganic granules; and wherein the coloring effect of the compacted inorganic granules in the cementitious system equals or exceeds the powder standard.
Abstract: Processes for preparing a carbon black product having an organic group attached to the carbon black. In one process at least one diazonium salt reacts with a carbon black in the absence of an externally applied electric current sufficient to reduce the diazonium salt. In another process at least one diazonium salt reacts with a carbon black in a protic reaction medium. Carbon black products which may be prepared according to process of the invention are described as well as uses of such carbon black products in plastic compositions, rubber compositions, paper compositions, and textile compositions.

Abstract: Carbon black is reacted with at least one organosilicon compound of the General Formula[R.sup.1.sub.n (RO).sub.3-n Si-(Alk).sub.m -(Ar).sub.p ]q [B](I)R.sup.1.sub.n (RO).sub.3-n Si-(Alkyl) (II)orR.sup.1.sub.n (RO).sub.3-n Si-(Alkenyl) (III),and any excess of said organosilicon compound is extracted with a solvent. The products are useful as active fillers in rubber mixtures, carbon black suspensions and plastic mixtures which can be cross-linked with sulfur or peroxide.
Abstract: There is disclosed a process for dyeing leather by the exhaust process, which comprises treating leather with an aqueous liquor which contains a formulation comprising a black anionic dye and a sulfonated carbon black. The leather dyeings obtained by this process have good allround fastness properties.

Abstract: A process for treating high sulfur petroleum coke to inhibit puffing is disclosed wherein particles of the petroleum coke are contacted with a compound containing an alkali or alkaline earth metal selected from the group consisting of sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium, at an elevated temperature above that at which the alkali or alkaline earth metal compound begins to react with carbon, but below the temperature at which the coke particles would begin to puff in the absence of the compound. The coke particles are maintained at the elevated temperature for a sufficient period of time to permit the reaction to proceed and allow products of reaction to penetrate into the particles and form an alkali-or alkaline-earth-metal-containing deposit throughout the mass of the particles; and then cooling the so-treated coke particles.
