With Biased Holding Means; E.g., Latch Patents (Class 108/146)
  • Patent number: 4195578
Abstract: Extensible support assembly for a table such as an overbed table to interconnect the top table portion and bottom stand portion thereof to change the table height, including a pair of axially overlapping upper and lower vertical support members arranged for relative axial movement therebetween, and a releasable unidirectional jamming mechanism interposed between the members having an inclined wedge surface on the upper member in opposed relation to a substantially axially extending contact surface on the lower member and forming a jamming wedge zone with the contact surface, a movable jamming roller element disposed in the jamming wedge zone, and a movable release element disposed operatively adjacent to the jamming element, such that the jamming element is movable independently of the wedge surface, contact surface and release element and is normally resiliently biased by a spring or the like independently of the release element into unidirectional jamming engagement between the wedge surface and contact surf

  • Patent number: 4128274
Abstract: A clamping device for medical apparatus includes a clamping member which act under the influence of spring bias force to permit upward displacement of the apparatus with minimal force and downward displacement of the apparatus when a predetermined applied force is exceeded. One handed adjustment of the apparatus position is thus enabled.

  • Patent number: 4119044
Abstract: A tool caddy has a wheeled horizontal platform from which a post projects rigidly upward near one margin of the platform. A support assembly is mounted on the post for movement in a vertical direction, and the assembly includes an upwardly-facing ledge. The combination includes a means for latching the support assembly at selectively different heights above the platform. A horizontal tray is positionable above the platform. A hanger rigidly affixed at one side of the tray is engageable over the ledge so as to support the tray removably above the platform. A handle is secured to the tray and is positioned thereabove in an orientation enabling disengagement of the hanger from the ledge upon an upward pull to the handle.

  • Patent number: 4026222
Abstract: A load-supporting structure such as a table, seat, bench, shelf and the like, including at least one stationary member carrying a slidably adjustable surface which is adapted to support a load. The adjustable load-supporting surface has channel means associated therewith in which the stationary member is slidably disposed. A latching mechanism, pivotally carried by the load-supporting surface, is provided to frictionally engage the stationary member in the channel in order to hold the load-supporting surface in position on the stationary member. The latching mechanism has a positive clamping mechanical advantage so that the frictional pressure exerted by the latching mechanism on the stationary member is directly proportional to the amount of weight placed on the adjustable load-supporting surface.

  • Patent number: 3999492
Abstract: A bedside table for use over a bed or like object. The table has a base and a vertical guide thereon. A table top having a support thereon is adapted to cooperate with the vertical guide on the base to maintain the table top horizontal as its vertical position is varied over a range. A constant force spring is connected between the base and the table top to apply a constant force tending to raise the table top over the range. Releasable locking means are provided to lock the table top at any vertical position within the range. The locking device includes a vertical surface and a pivotally mounted cam secured to move into and out of engagement with the vertical surface. A spring is provided for continuously urging the cam toward engagement with the vertical surface. The spacing between the pivot axis for the cam and the vertical surface is less than the length of the cam between the pivot axis and the free end of the cam.
