    Abstract: Apparatus (2) for the pyrolysis of material, which apparatus (2) comprises a pyrolysis chamber (4), an inlet (6) at a first end (8) of the pyrolysis chamber (4), an outlet (10) at a second end (12) of the pyrolisis chamber (4), and feed means (14) for feeding the material through the pyrolysis chamber (4), the feed means (14) comprising a cranked member (16), at least one elongate member (18) which extends along the pyrolysis chamber (4) between the inlet (6) and the outlet (10) and which has a first end (20) adjacet the (6) inlet and a second end (22) adjacent the outlet (10), a feed formation connected to the first end (20) of the elongate member (18), and connector means (24) which connects the send end (22) of the elongate member (18) to the cranked member (16), and the feed means (14) being such that rotation of the cranked member (16) causes the elongate member (18) to move backwards and forwards and the feed formation to move the material from the inlet (6) towards the outlet (10).

The discharge base for the chamber for the heat treatment of the material is capable of separating the fine fraction of the material from the oversize fraction of the material. The discharge base has a plurality of conveyor elements which are movable to and fro for the discharge of the oversize fraction of the material. The discharge base is also provided with separator openings for separating out the fine fraction of the material. The conveyor elements are of bar-shape construction and are disposed in parallel to one another on the discharge base to be moveable in the direction of their longitudinal extent, and the separator openings are formed by longitudinal gaps between the conveyor elements.

    Abstract: Stoves fueled by biomass pellets are provided with a grate assembly that supports the pellets for combustion and directs combustion gas into the fire. The grate assembly includes a passive grate and a moveable elongate blade spaced above the upper surface of the grate to direct ash and clinkers through a plurality of elongate slots in the grate. The design of the planar plate and the movement of the blade serves to prevent the ash and clinkers from accumulating on the grate in amounts that could block the elongate slots and reduce the flow of combustion gas into the fire.

    Abstract: This invention relates to a grate for burning solid combustibles and, more particularly, refuse in a fired furnace. The grate comprises a plurality of steps, each step including a plurality of adjacent grate bars with alternate steps of grate bars being movable relative to an adjacent step of stationary grate bars. Each grate bar includes a substantially horizontal platform terminating in a front lip, a pusher and means for pivotally mounting said pusher beneath the platform at a point near the back of the platform. The pusher includes a faceplate shaped to form an elongated channel with the undersurface of the lip to pass combustion air to said firing chamber. The relative position of the pusher and horizontal platform can be adjusted to vary the size of the air channel in order to adjust the amount of air fed to the firing chamber.
