  • Patent number: 5522331
Abstract: A sewing machine carries a sewing needle which in turn carries a thread through a stitching aperture of a throat plate beneath which is located a gripper carried by a gripper shaft. The gripper is defined by a gripper neck, a gripper hook and a gripper knee joining the gripper hook and the gripper neck. Located adjacent the gripper bend is a thread-cutting blade. A cam, link and linkage system is provided for selectively driving the gripper shaft to selectively (a) move the gripper (7) a predetermined distance through which the cutting blade is inoperative and (b) move the gripper a further distance beyond the predetermined distance through which the cutting blade is operative to cut-off the thread. A stop boss is also provided adjacent the gripper bend to prevent the thread from being cut during motion of the gripper the predetermined distance.

  • Patent number: 5477793
Abstract: A cutting apparatus for embroidery machines that facilitates the positive cutting of the threads at the end of each embroidery operation. Large-scale embroidery machines may provide several hundred embroidery positions, and each position is provided with an individually-actuable cutting and gripping device. These individual cutting mechanisms are in turn collectively mounted on one or more feeder bars that permit the pivotal movement of the cutter/grippers into and away from a position in close proximity to the embroidery needle stitch points. This pivotal movement permits the close cutting of the thread when required, yet otherwise locates the thread cutter/grippers at a position away from the stitch points during the embroidery operation itself.

  • Patent number: 5005504
Abstract: A thread-cutting device for zigzag sewing machines for forming uniformly short thread ends regardless of the top stitch position of the last stitch. The thread cutter 28 is movable in a plane that is parallel to the thread catcher 33 and is connected by a drive unit 45 through 58 having stop sections 54, 55 to the drive of the thread catcher 33 such that the thread catcher can be moved, together with the cutter, into the cutting position located below the center of the stitch hole. While the thread cutter 28 stops in the cutting position, the thread catcher completes the thread separation process. The thread cutter 28 is moved back during the return movement of the thread catcher 33 only after the threads have been cut. The drive unit 45 through 58 for the thread cutter 28 is of positive-locking design, as a result of which even thick threads are cut reliably. The thread cutting device is particularly suitabloe for installation (even subsequent installation) in stitch group zigzag sewing machines.

  • Patent number: 4461229
Abstract: A device is disclosed for pulling out and cutting off the needle and looper threads in a sewing machine with a delivery roller for delivering material to the machine sewing station. The delivery roller is driven over a first drive, which is dependent on the sewing machine main drive and over a second drive, which is independent of the sewing machine main drive. On the looper of the sewing machine is secured a cutting blade for the needle thread. Furthermore, a needle thread clamp is provided. In order to manage, with a single means for pulling out the needle and looper threads by different lengths, a cutting device for the looper thread is arranged between the cutting blade and the delivery roller, with a guide which is traversed by a thread inlet groove and with a counterknife for a thread severing knife that moves transverse to the material feeding direction. The delivery roller is driven over the second drive for pulling out the threads.

  • Patent number: 4365568
Abstract: A single-operation cam mechanism includes a cam body with a cam surface extending along the body from an entrance location to an exit location. A cam follower is retained in a waiting position adjacent a part of the cam body at which the exit location is found. When the cam follower is moved free of the retainer, a spring forces the cam follower to the part of the cam where the entrance location is found. Then, as the cam rotates, the cam surface engages the follower and forces it back through the exit location and past a resilient trap to the waiting position. The trap snaps shut after the follower has been forced past it, and the surface of the trap then prevents the follower from moving back into engagement with the cam surface except by way of the entrance location. In an underbed thread trimmer, a support member for the cam follower engages a pin connected to blade-like members, some of which have hooks, to carry one set of such members to a position in which their hooks engage looptaker thread.

  • Patent number: 4108098
Abstract: A thread-cutting assembly for use with a sewing machine that always presents a sharp cutting edge for thread cutting. The assembly includes a circular cutting disk having a circumferential cutting edge, and a guard plate for preventing access to the majority of the circumferential cutting edge of the disk but exposing a portion of the disk circumferential cutting edge. The disk is mounted to the guard plate so that the disk rotates with respect to the guard means about an axis when thread to be cut by the disk is brought into engagement with the exposed portion of the disk so that a new cutting surface is exposed, and the guard plate is operatively mounted to a sewing machine. The guard plate also sharpens the cutting edge of the disk upon rotation of the disk with respect to the guard plate, the guard plate being formed of metal having a greater temper than the metal of the disk.
