  • Patent number: 5055822
Abstract: A scent alarm device which includes a housing and a spray canister of an odorant, such as butyl mercaptan, supported within the housing utilizes a mechanism for intermittently dispensing odorant from the canister upon the occurrence of a predetermined event. The spray canister has a depressible release valve for releasing canister contents upon depression of the valve, and the depressing mechanism is adapted to repeatedly depress the canister release valve in an intermittent fashion. The device may utilize a canister having a height within a range of canister heights, and if desired, the device may be interfaced with a number of other alarm systems, such as a smoke or heat detector or used to alert an individual that household electrical power has been shut off.

  • Patent number: 4773350
Abstract: A temperature sensor indicates imminent mechanical failure of a device by detecting a sharp rise in temperature of the device above a normal operating temperature range. The sensor is a flexible container filled with a signal fluid and closed by a plug having a melting point which is above the normal operating temperature range of the device. Tube flexure allows it to conform substantially to the shape of a surface on the device being monitored. Flexing the tube changes its internal pressure but has no effect on the plug, which responds only to changes in temperature.

  • Patent number: 4758826
Abstract: The work area advanced warning system is for use on the work site to give warning of impending danger in order to give time for workers and others to avoid the danger before the damage. Dangers are sensed by the use of contained exploding charges, smoke and horns or sirens activated by remote control to create unnatural comotion thus alerting the senses to potential loss.

  • Patent number: 4698620
Abstract: The present invention involves a multiple protection security device which is used to prevent and/or detect burglary of articles, particularly of consumer goods and the like. In one embodiment, the present invention is a remote signal-actuating device for attachment to articles which includes a fluid-containing member which releases detection fluid in response to a predetermined force. In a second embodiment, an electronic security device includes such a fluid-containing member, and, in a third embodiment, a security device for physically restraining an article includes such a fluid-containing member. The detection fluid may be a gas, a liquid or a mixture of these and it may be a coloring agent, an odor containing fluid, a flourescent or phosphorescent dye, a radioactive material or the like.

  • Patent number: 4604604
Abstract: A material wear indicator for a disc brake lining or clutch pad or any other erodible part comprises a vapor substance. Erosion of the part to a predetermined level exposes the substance to an ambient environment or other chemical means. The substance begins to exude an invisible vapor with a specific scent or oder. Alternatively or in combination with a scent emission, visible vapor can be color coded for a fretted part identification or erosion level thereof. The presence of the vapor immediately alerts service personnel of the danger and necessity to replace the worn-out part. The vapor emitting wear indicator does not require any electrical, hydraulic, sound or mechanical connection to any gauge or system and therefore represents one of the cheapest, reliable and most effective ways to indicate the selected level of material abrasion.

  • Patent number: 4449474
Abstract: A personal security device is disclosed which comprises a trigger actuated aerosol canister contained in a two-piece telescoping housing. The canister contains a pressurized offensive odor containing gas such as mercaptoethanol which, when ejected from the canister, emits a loud shrieking noise. Additionally, the gas may, as an additional additive, contain a suspension of fine solid or liquid particles of paint or stain so that the device when actuated, discourages a potential rapist or attacker with offensive odor and noise and also identifies him with a stain. In one preferred embodiment, the telescoping housing also includes a flash-type light which is actuated by the same triggers which actuate the canister. The telescoping housing has a key ring attached at one end and may also have a mechanical whistle at the other end.

  • Patent number: 4423626
Abstract: A method for avoiding detection by game animals by scent through establishing wind direction to insure that the hunter is positioned downwind from the animal. In the method, a small quantity of a hydrophobic material such as unscented raw talc powder, which may be mixed with a natural masking scent material, is sprayed into the air in a relatively small cloud by means of a hand-held manually operated squeeze bottle. The direction of travel in the air of the cloud of material may then be used to establish wind direction. The material is such as to be undetectable by smell by the animal, and the size and characteristics of the powder cloud is such as to be visually undetectable by the animal at a distance.

  • Patent number: 4404923
Abstract: A heat alarm for releasing a strong readily noticeable odor when subjected to heat above a preselected level. A glass container having an elongated breakable neck portion is filled with an odoriferous fluid. When the neck portion is broken, the fluid can escape from the container. The fluid upon contact with the atmosphere creates a strong odor the presence of which is immediately apparent to all persons within the surrounding area. A heat reactive member that bends upon being subjected to heat above a preselected level is arranged around the neck portion of the container. When this heat reactive member is subjected to heat above the preselected level, the member bends and breaks the neck portion of the container thereby enabling the fluid to escape.

  • Patent number: 4292916
Abstract: A disposable timer and product storage condition indicator in which components of a carrier mixture react physically and/or chemically with one or more receptive layers. The carrier mixture and receptive layers are so comprised as to react during a given time interval, the interval being dependent upon and constantly modified by such external physical conditions as temperature, moisture, light, radiation, or pressure. During the timing period the device can either give a changing color display which is matched in rate to the declining freshness of a food or medicine in a container to which the device is attached or can cause the appearance or disappearance of words or symbols or sticky areas or odors. A variety of means for activating the timer are possible.

  • Patent number: 4223804
Abstract: A portable defense device combining a flashlight with a renewable, interchangeable cylinder containing compressed gas which may be used to generate a noise, to disperse dye and/or an odoriferous spray. The compressed gas may be stored in a canister which may take the form of a spray can having the typical articulated dispensing nozzle which is then received in an articulated throat assembly displaced to release the contents by a pivoted trigger engaging a pivoted arm assembly. In the normal state the trigger is aligned over the exit opening of the throat, thus protecting the dispensing nozzle from inadvertent release, and when released the trigger aligns to engage the arm.
