Patent number: 4404926Abstract: The recording of surface topology is obtained by first bringing the surface into contact with the imaging material-coated side of a dry process dispersion type recording film comprising a transparent substrate on which is coated a very thin, high optical density, opaque body of imaging material, preferably coated with a thin abrasion-resistant protective layer. Radiant energy is then momentarily directed to the imaging material through the transparent substrate. When the heat generated by the absorbed radiant energy is above a given threshold value at a particular location of the imaging material, the material deforms and disperses thereat to form connected or unconnected globules with spaces therebetween. Upon termination of the radiant energy, the dispersed material becomes frozen in place.Type: GrantFiled: October 8, 1981Date of Patent: September 20, 1983Assignee: Energy Conversion Devices, Inc.Inventors: Mark H. Patent number: 4321885Abstract: Apparatus for the quantity production of friction nuts prepared for subsequent fusion of thermoplastic resin particles deposited in thread grooves therein, in which the nuts are supported with their axes vertical, a fluid slurry of the particles in a liquid carrier is introduced into the threaded interior of the nuts to fill the threaded opening, including the thread grooves therein, either completely or to a predetermined level from the bottom of the nuts. Excess slurry is then drained from the bottom ends of the openings. The exterior of the nuts is washed or otherwise cleared of any slurry thereon. In order to leave the threads clear of obstruction at the bottom of the nut, the deposited slurry, after partially drying, is removed from the bottom thread convolutions by repeatedly inserting and withdrawing a sponge-like material directly into and out of the lower end of the thread opening, or by strongly agitating a small quantity of water in the lower part of the threaded opening, or otherwise.Type: GrantFiled: April 23, 1981Date of Patent: March 30, 1982Assignee: The Oakland CorporationInventor: Richard B. Patent number: 4278482Abstract: A reactive polyurethane mixture is applied by a high pressure airless spray applicator directly onto the primary backing of a moving substrate such as a carpet web. The applied reactive mixture is allowed to foam to an approximate predetermined thickness and density. While the blown or foamed backing layer still possesses substantial residual tackiness, it is compressed or regauged to a precise uniform thickness and simultaneously is provided with either an embossed or a smooth surface. The tack of internal cell walls of the blown backing layer retains the layer at the regauged thickness. Curing of the regauged backing layer by externally applied heat and/or by the heat of the exothermic reaction in the applied mixture is completed. Detackifying agents are applied to the regauging devices and/or to the applied backing layer to prevent adherence of the layer to the regauging devices. A surface skin formed of the detackifying agents is cured on the regauged backing layer.Type: GrantFiled: June 26, 1979Date of Patent: July 14, 1981Assignee: Custom Coating, Inc.Inventors: William C.
