  • Patent number: 6132804
Abstract: A process for producing high quality reverse osmosis, nanofiltration, and ultrafiltration membranes in a high speed process provides membranes which have excellent rejection characteristics coupled with high flux capabilities. The process employs tandem coating techniques to coat a microporous substrate with a thin membrane on the order of 25 .ANG. to 1.0 microns. The tandem coating process comprises tandem offset gravure and subsequent slot die coating applicators, or alternatively comprises tandem slot die coating applicators. For reverse osmosis and nanfiltration membranes, a wet-on-wet coating process is used to coat a porous substrate first with an aqueous solution, and then with an organic solution to produce a cross-linked, interfacially polymerized composite membrane. Single slot coating applicators are utilized to produce ultrafiltration membranes.

  • Patent number: 6068700
Abstract: A coating apparatus for a traveling web comprising two coating heads and a traveling path changing roller is disclosed. A bar coater is arranged close to a pass roller. The bar coater is fixed at such a position as to contact the web when the pass roller is moved down. An extrusion coater is arranged below a backup roller in such a manner as to move up and down. If the pass roller moves up and bends up the traveling path of the web, the web separates from the bar coater. Then, if the extrusion coater moves up, the web is coated with the coating solution by the extrusion coater. If the pass roller and the extrusion coater move down, the web is coated with the coating solution by the bar coater.

  • Patent number: 5401314
Abstract: The present invention relates to a device for coating traveling webs of paper or board having two web guide rolls closely adjacent each other. Each roll has an applicator associated on its periphery. The applicators cooperate with each other at least in part for the coating of the web directly one after the other, preferably within at most 0.15 seconds. The rolls are arranged one above the other--possibly somewhat laterally shifted from each other. The lower roll has an applicator chamber of a nozzle applicator in the region of its periphery remote from the upper roll. The upper roll has at least one of the following on its web-entrance side--with respect to the lower roll--a sump chamber for coating composition formed of a doctor element and its mount and on its other side, an applicator chamber of a nozzle applicator. The lower roll may be adapted to be swung or lowered away from the upper roll and/or the upper roll may be liftable away from the lower roll.

  • Patent number: 5203920
Abstract: A coating section for coating a traveling web of material, such as paper, wherein the web to be coated travels along a selected one of two different web paths. There is a lower counter roll and an upper press roll which define a nip between them and the distance apart of the two rolls is adjustable. A respective applicator for coating composition is on each of the first and second sides of the lower roll and on the third side of the upper roll, and the third side is the same side of the coating section as the first side of the lower roll. First web guide rollers guide the web from below, past the counter roll and the first applicator and not through the nip. Second guide rollers guide the web through the nip.

  • Patent number: 5099758
Abstract: In a screen printing apparatus an applicator body is rotatable about its axis to selectively bring one of a plurality of medium supply ducts into active position so that it can deliver the color medium to the substrate. The applicator roller or blade and a strip defining the applicator compartment are provided on the rotatable body for each set of orifices and each distribution duct so that these elements need not be cleaned for color changeover since they remain associated with the color when the applicator is rotated.

  • Patent number: 4764402
Abstract: Solvent which is contained in coating material to be applied to a running web is recovered in a chamber which is sealed from the atmosphere and wherein the solvent-containing coating material is first applied to one or more endless belt conveyors which transport the respective layers to discrete transfer stations for application to the running web. Streams of an inert gaseous fluid are circulated through the chamber to withdraw the solvent and to convey it into a condenser wherein the solvent is recovered from the gaseous fluid. The inert gaseous fluid is heated to promote the expulsion of solvent from the coating material on the conveyor or conveyors. The web can be provided with a base coat upstream of the first transfer station so that the layers of coating material are applied over the base coat. The latter is dried upstream of the transfer stations.

  • Patent number: 4499848
Abstract: Apparatus for applying film coatings of material to electrical component bodies having axial leads includes adhesive tape for supporting the components in spaced relationship. A supply reel carries a supported plurality of such components. A shaft has a circumferential row of transversely oriented pockets for receiving component bodies whereby their leads are parallel. The shaft is oriented with respect to a lower reservoir providing liquid polyurethane, so that, as it rotates, sequential pockets pass through the liquid material, retaining menisci thereof therewithin. As the component bodies are received by the menisci retained pockets, underside portions of the components are coated with liquid material. A brush applies liquid material from a upper reservoir to upper portions of the carried bodies. The brush smooths the upper portions to avoid formation of globs or blobs thereon.
