  • Patent number: 8839737
Abstract: A device and a method for coating a printing material include a foil engaged with a printing material on an impression cylinder using guide rollers. The foil and the printing material are guided together in an engagement area and a functional layer, such as glue or varnish, is dried, i.e. activated or polymerized, through the foil in the engagement area using a drier. The guide rollers are disengaged from the impression cylinder to avoid contact between the foil and grippers of the impression cylinder. To improve a detachment behavior of the foil from the functional layer, an angle of detachment between the foil and the sheet is varied by pivoting the guide rollers about an external geometrical pivot axis or an internal geometrical pivot axis, or at least assisting the disengagement of the foil from the impression cylinder by a change of a pneumatic condition of a foil-guiding element.

  • Patent number: 5743964
Abstract: A roll coating system for coating strip metal having a plurality of coating head rolls mounted on support sleds capable of linear translation along a single rail. Precision linear actuators are located between each support sled and between one of the sleds and a fourth sled. A splice traverse mechanism actuated by a piston/cylinder displaces the fourth sled. Each of the rolls can be independently displaced or the entire head can be displaced by the splice traverse mechanism. Force measurement sensors are located in the support sleds for an accurate measurement of nip pressures between the respective rolls. The elastic response of the support sleds may be varied to alter the natural resonant frequency of the coating system. The movement of a pan lift mechanism is coupled to the movement of the pickup roll so as to eliminate the chance for collision therebetween.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for treating the walls of apertures passing through a planar substrate with a fluid treatment solution. The method comprises placement of a pressurized fluid wedge beneath, above, or both beneath and above a planar substrate as it passes through a treatment chamber. The apparatus that forms the fluid wedge is a roller assembly comprising a roller within a shroud which carries fluid as it rotates through a gap between the roller and the shroud. The roller provides the dual function of forming the fluid wedge and conveying the planar substrate through the treatment chamber.

Abstract: An adhesive applicator comprising a transfer roller is provided with a uniform layer of glue and is set against a format roller such that application members distributed over its periphery pick up glue applied in a certain format and transfer the same to workpieces to be coated with glue. To prevent that glue thrown off from the application members contaminates the apparatus and gets lost, a collection roller (2) is disposed in direction of rotation of the format roller (14) before the transfer roller (1), which collection roller forms a troughlike nip with said transfer roller (1).

  • Patent number: 5501734
Abstract: An apparatus and method for applying coatings to yarns, particularly yarns to be utilized as dental floss. In a preferred arrangement, an array of parallel spaced yarns are continuously fed while being intermittently deflected by a cam or deflector. As the yarns are deflected, they enter a grooved liquid applicator, with the grooves maintaining a predetermined amount of liquid therein by capillary action. A predetermined amount of liquid is thus applied at intermittent or spaced locations along the length of the yarn. The method and apparatus is particularly suitable for providing dye at spaced locations along a continuous length of floss, thereby demarcating lengths suitable for individual use. Various aspects are also applicable to a variety of yarn coating and/or dyeing applications.

  • Patent number: 5476546
Abstract: An apparatus for applying a liquid lubricant in a pattern to a face of a sheet workpiece has a support frame through which the workpiece is transported in a travel direction substantially parallel to its face, a plurality of axles in the frame extending along respective axes generally perpendicular to the direction and individually displaceable generally perpendicular to the direction and to the respective axes, and respective liquid-pervious rollers journaled on the axles about the respective axes. A liquid lubricant is fed to the rollers and respective actuators connected between the axles and the frame displace the respective rollers perpendicular to the direction and to the respective axes into and out of contact with the workpiece as same passes in the direction through the frame. A controller connected to the actuators individually controls and operates same to apply the liquid lubricant in the rollers to the workpiece in a predetermined pattern as the workpiece passes through the frame.
