  • Patent number: 5484482
Abstract: A method and apparatus for limiting the width of a coating and/or preventing damage to roll ends while coating or surface-sizing paper or an equivalent web material in a coating device in which a coating agent, such as size, coating paste or equivalent, is introduced into the coating device to an application zone defined by a coating member, a moving base, lateral seals, and a front wall and spread onto the moving base by the coating member which is loaded against the moving base. Liquid jets are sprayed into the areas outside the coating width, substantially over the width defined by the lateral seals and the roll ends, either onto the moving base before the coating member in the running direction of the moving base or directly into the nip formed by the moving base and the coating member. The liquid jets lubricate the nip and dilute the coating agent that has entered into the areas outside the coating width.

  • Patent number: 5413806
Abstract: A continuous strip coating machine has top and bottom applicator rolls and a backup roll adjacent the top applicator roll. A lift roll to lift the strip of material and thus vary the angle of wrap of the strip about the bottom applicator roll is provided. The use of the lift roll in turn varies the pressure between the strip and the roll and thus the thickness of the coating applied to the strip bottom. Thickness may be measured indirectly by measuring pressure of the strip on the applicator roll. Thickness may also be measured directly. Oscillations of the strip in a drying oven may also be sensed and compensated for. Feedback control is used with the thickness measuring techniques to control the coating thickness by varying angle of wrap, relative speed between the applicator roll and strip, and/or nip pressure between the applicator roll and a transfer roll that transfers coating material to the applicator roll.

  • Patent number: 5332472
Abstract: This invention relates to the treatment of substrates with fluidized material in repetitive patterns during application cycles. The treatment patterns made with this invention can be altered by changing machine operating parameters. The patterns of fluidized material are applied to substrates using an applicator drum. Machined in the outer surface of the applicator drum are a plurality of slots filled with deformable material. The deformable material extends to a position in each slot just short of the outside diameter of the applicator drum, leaving a cavity in each slot. These cavities are filled with slurry in a slurry applicator unit. A compression drum mounted within the hollow interior of the applicator drum uses compression tips to displace the deformable material in each slot in succession beyond the periphery of applicator drum at a position adjacent to the substrate, causing the slurry in the cavity to be applied to the substrate.

Abstract: A glue cell apparatus for applying glue in a web printing unit is disclosed, which apparatus includes one or more self-contained modular units that have a finite width in the direction of the width of the web to which glue is applied. The modular units are carried and mounted upon a rail structure that extends substantially across the full width of the web and a drive shaft is also provided which also extends substantially the same distance. Each of the glue cells preferably has a transfer cylinder that is driven by the drive shaft that is operably connected and driven by the gluing and/or coating machine, and a metering roller subassembly having a metering roller which calibrates the thickness of the layer of glue that is ultimately applied to the web. The metering roller has an internal hydraulic motor which drives the same. In an alternate embodiment, a pan roller subassembly is also provided.

  • Patent number: 5079044
Abstract: Coating apparatus and method of operation where the rotatable transfer cylinder and the rotatable metering roller of the coating device do not have internal cooling, but the heated coating liquid which is discharged from the nip between these rollers is itself cooled before being recirculated to a liquid holding pan beneath the transfer cylinder. A liquid catch tray is positioned below the metering roller for receiving coating liquid dripping from the metering roller, the catch tray having a downward incline toward the liquid holding pan, and the catch tray being spaced vertically and laterally away from the nip between the transfer cylinder and the metering roller to thereby provide an open space between the holding pan and the catch tray. A reservoir is positioned below the open space and below the nip for receiving coating liquid from the catch tray and the nip, and for receiving coating liquid overflowing from the holding pan.

Abstract: An improved roll coating apparatus and method includes a coating roll having a smooth surface for applying a resist, a doctor roll having grooves on its surface for supplying prescribed amount of the resist to the coating roll, and a back up roll which is in contact with the coating roll for conveying a substrate on which the resist is applied to a prescribed direction. Even if there are minute concave portions on the surface of the substrate, the resist is forced to fill the minute concave portions, since the resist is pressed and forced to be applied on the substrate by the coating roll having smooth surface and the back up roll.

Abstract: In a device for applying fluid substances in printing and coating machines, carrying plates are fixed to ends of a carrying beam. The carrying plates have recesses therein in which pivot axles of a coating roller are loosely and rotatably mounted. Stopping surfaces are provided to limit lateral movement of the coating roller by abutting with its pivot axles. The stopping surfaces are formed adjacent the recesses formed in the carrying plates and converge in the direction in which a fabric strip which is to be printed on is moved beneath the roller.

  • Patent number: 4949667
Abstract: A roll coating apparatus for applying a coating liquid having a high viscosity at a normal temperature, to a surface of a substrate, including a device for feeding the substrate, a coating roll rotatably provided in contact with the fed substrate, and a doctor for regulating the coating liquid adhering to the coating roll to a prescribed amount. Respective axial lines of the coating roll and the doctor are inclined with a prescribed angle with respect to the horizontal plane and a coating liquid supply device is provided at the highest position thereof. The coating liquid supplied at the highest end of the coating roll adheres to the surface of the coating roll. The quantity thereof is controlled by the doctor. The coating liquid flows downward on the surface of the coating roll due to its weight and rotation of the coating roll. Accordingly, the coating liquid on the surface of the coating roll is constantly renewed and no irregularities occur to the density of the liquid.

Abstract: A convertible coating apparatus provides one or two side coating of a web having wet ink thereon to permit both printing and coating to be carried out prior to any drying operation. The apparatus includes a coating applicator roller in contact with a relatively hard back-up roller. The coating applicator roller is supplied with coating in both the one and two side operations while the back-up roller is supplied with coating only in the two side operation. Water is supplied to the back-up roller in the one side operation and the back-up roller has a hydrophilic surface which, when supplied with water, repels the wet ink on the web passing through the couple and prevents smudging and offset of the ink to the back-up roller. A method of carrying out the one and two side coating is also disclosed. A turning roller is also provided which guides the freshly inked web between inking operations without smudging the ink on the web.
