  • Patent number: 4667879
Abstract: A valved flow control dispenser including a slot nozzle through which molten thermoplastic material is dispensed onto a substrate. The slot nozzle includes a nozzle body within which there is a transverse cylindrical bore, which bore is intersected by two spaced radial openings. One of these openings is in fluid communication with a pressurized source of molten thermoplastic material, and the other opening is in fluid communication with a slotted discharge opening of the nozzle. A cylindrical flow control member having a groove provided in its exterior surface is rotatably mounted within the bore. This groove is of varying width and provides a flow path for molten thermoplastic material between the openings in the bore. By varying the rotatable orientation of the cylinder relative to the openings, the width of molten material dispensed from the slotted discharge openings of the nozzle may be varied.

  • Patent number: 4558658
Abstract: A device for coating a continuous web that travels over a back-up roll. The force of application can be adjusted. The coating material is applied to the web with a slotted applicator pipe. The pipe extends over the width of the web and has a preliminary coating-material flow-regulating gap. A coating-material flow-regulating lip and a return lip adjoin the gap in such a way as to constitute a coating-material flow-regulating chamber extending over the width of the web. The flow-regulating lip is a doctor bed and has a doctor batten that moves with little friction along at least one overflow-side slide face. The face of the doctor batten toward the web that is being coated is rectangular and demarcates in conjunction with the web a narrowing wedge-shaped gap with a geometry that depends on the degree of contact pressure. The overflow edge of the face is a straight and sharp stripping edge. The face and stripping edge of the doctor batten are flexible.

Abstract: A rotary workpiece treating apparatus is described particularly useful for depositing coating or adhesive materials within threaded fastener nuts. The device includes a continuously rotating turntable assembly having a plurality of workstation cylinders attached thereto. Installed within the cylinders are plungers having cam followers, which plungers move between a first and second position as the turntable assembly is rotated. A probe attached to the plunger is caused to enter within the internal bore of the nuts and release flowable material within the nut. • Patent number: 4494480
Abstract: The invention relates to an apparatus for spreading a fluid onto a moving web of material, especially for spreading size onto a paper web. It is previously known to spread fluid substances onto a moving web of material by means of a comb nozzle. Especially when size is being spread, the size tends to harden during stoppages, thereby clogging the openings of the comb nozzle. The apparatus according to the present invention enables a fluid to be spread onto a moving web of material without the apparatus getting clogged even in a dusty environment. By means of the apparatus it is possible to spread even rapidly drying fluids without the risk of the substance being spread drying in the nozzle opening or openings during stoppages.

  • Patent number: 4426072
Abstract: An improved glue application system is used in combination with a collating apparatus of the type in which a plurality of rolls are mounted on spaced spindles and webs unwound from the spindles are to be collected in overlapping relation. The improved glue application system includes at least one flexible tapered nozzle having a tubular body and a tip having an end which contacts a supported surface of a selected web at an angle normal to the supported surface, the nozzle being mounted on the collating apparatus such that the tubular body flexes in response to variations in distance from the supported surface to the tubular body so that the end remains in contact with the supported web during operation of the apparatus. The nozzle communicates with a source of glue by a conduit which carries a valve which can be remotely controlled to start or stop the flow of glue through the nozzle.

  • Patent number: 4418640
Abstract: The applicator for applying adhesive to a work piece, for example in an edge glueing machine for work pieces moving continuously through the machine, has adhesive discharge holes (6). The adhesive is supplied through these holes (6) under pressure to the edge of work pieces. Any contaminating particles, which may be present in the adhesive prior to its application to the work piece, tend to travel upwardly with the adhesive in the adhesive supply conduit (2, 4), due to their lower specific weight, whereby the contaminations may clog the discharge holes (6) and prevent the proper application of adhesive to a work piece. For avoiding such clogging the nozzle body (1) is provided with a scavenging duct (5) which is connectable to the adhesive supply conduit (2, 4) for repeatedly passing a portion of adhesive out of the supply conduit (4), whereby the application of adhesive may be performed without any trouble. The discharge holes (6) are closed during the scavenging of a small portion of adhesive.

  • Patent number: 4416214
Abstract: A coating method and coating extruder in which color non-uniformity and stripes in a coated solution on a surface of a continuously-run flexible belt-shaped support are eliminated. Coating solution is supplied from a solution pool of the extruder through a slit at a rate which is greater than that which the coating solution is applied to the support through the slit. A portion of the coating solution is discharged from the solution pool from a position furthers, in the widthwise direction of the support, from the solution supplying point of the solution pool.

  • Patent number: 4411215
Abstract: In the coating of a major surface of a strip article, wherein the strip surface is advanced longitudinally past a dam and, immediately beyond the dam, past an extended wall spaced from the strip surface by a gap equal to a desired wet coating thickness, a first liquid coating material is applied to the strip surface ahead of the dam and a second liquid coating material is delivered under pressure to the gap beyond the dam through one or more apertures in the wall to produce a stripe or stripes of the second coating material. The apertures can be provided in a rotatable disk, constituting a portion of the wall; rotary movement of the disk angularly displaces the apertures so as to vary the location and spacing of the produced stripes, for example in a manner simulating the appearance of natural wood grain.

  • Patent number: 4411218
Abstract: Production of a longitudinally striated coating on a strip article by advancing the article past an open side of an otherwise-enclosed trench so that the article surface to be coated closes the open trench side, while delivering concurrent laminar flows of two different liquid coating materials to the trench at least at one locality spaced from the trench open side, to keep the trench completely filled and to deposit a layer of coating material on the moving article surface. Liquid circulation in the trench caused by the motion of the article surface so distributes the two coating materials along the trench that the applied coating layer is constituted of alternating longitudinal striations of the two materials.

  • Patent number: 4380524
Abstract: A machine for applying cement in the corner between the unwiped portion of the margin of a shoe upper mounted on a last and the corresponding portion of the periphery of an insole located on the last bottom by a pair of nozzles that each has a laterally projecting tip wherein the toe portion of the upper margin has been wiped against and secured to the insole and segments of the upper margin at the boundaries between the wiped and unwiped margin portions overhang the insole. The nozzles are caused to apply cement in the corner while moving from the heel end extremity of the corner to locations beneath the margin segments, after which the nozzle tips are moved inwardly of the segments and are then moved away from the insole. The nozzles are placed at the heel end extremity of the corner by being moved downwardly against the insole while the tips face the heel and extremity of the insole and are then moved heelwardly to positions wherein the nozzles are proximate to the heel end of the upper margin.
