    Abstract: An apparatus and method are provided for applying a uniform liquid coating on a spherical semiconductor device. The present invention includes a multi functional process tube having an end which is covered by a liquid processing material which remains in place due to its surface tension and viscosity. Spherical semiconductor substrates are then dropped through the liquid material and become encapsulated by the fluid. At a subsequent stage in the process tube, vibratory motion is induced in the spheres to cause random motion along a linear combination of the three axes (x, y, z) and distribute the fluid material evenly around the surface of the sphere. The uniformly coated spheres then encounter a heating stage which cause the distributed processing material to become hardened and allow easier handling of the spherical semiconductor substrates for subsequent processing.

    Abstract: A dual-layer DVD disc that does not require a stamping step (typically, as part of the 2P prior art manufacturing process) during its manufacture. A polycarbonate substrate is molded and coated with a semireflective data layer in the usual way. A PMMA substrate is molded and coated with a fully reflective data layer. Adhesive is placed on the semireflective data layer, and the fully reflective data layer is transferred from its PMMA substrate to the polycarbonate substrate. The polycarbonate substrate thus ends up with two data layers in conformance with the DVD specifications, and the PMMA substrate can even be recycled for another use.

    Abstract: A method and an apparatus are disclosed to improve the planarization of a coating upon a substrate, in particular to improve the planarization of a photoresist or spin-on-glass coating upon a semiconductor wafer. This is achieved by coupling an ultrasonic wave generator to either the chuck or the spindle of the chuck. Ultrasonic waves emanating from the ultrasonic generator are induced into the coating, vibrating it. The vibration causes coating material to fill in the valleys of the coating, thus planarizing the surface of the coating.

    Abstract: Methods and apparatus for providing a vibrational enhancement to the recoating process in stereolithography are disclosed. The formation of a thin layer of building material over a previous layer of structure of a partially completed three-dimensional object, in preparation for formation of an additional layer of structure, is enhanced by the use of vibrational energy imparted to the building medium. In a first preferred apparatus, vibration is induced into the surface of the material by a plurality of vibrating needles that penetrate below the working surface to a sufficient depth to ensure adequate coupling but not deep enough to come into contact with the surface of the partially completed part. In a second preferred apparatus, vibration is coupled directly to the object support. The vibrational energy is then transmitted through the part to the surface of the building material.

Thereafter, the transport system moves the article past an ultrasonic wave source. The impact of the ultrasonic energy transmitted to the unwanted coating material across the apertures causes the removal thereof. The removed coating material is returned to the coating material in which the article was immersed.

    Abstract: Apparatus (1) for applying solder to electrical components such as integrated circuit packages (2) has a chamber (4) which contains a body of solder. The chamber (4) has outlet openings (10) which are below the surface of the solder and from which a flow of solder is provided. Since dross (oxidized solder) floats on the surface of the solder, the flow of solder is relatively pure. The leads of the packages are dipped into the flow of solder so that they are coated with a protective layer of solder. Vibrational apparatus (2) is also provided to vibrate the circuit packages (2) during the dipping of the packages (2) into the solder flow. In this way solder is prevented from bridging the spacing between two closely spaced, adjacent leads.

    Abstract: A method is disclosed for coating dowels with a substantially uniform coat of water soluble glue. A plurality of dowels and a preselected amount of liquid, water soluble glue are placed in a closed container. The container is rapidly shaken so that the container moves in a combination oscillating motion comprising an up and down movement and a back and forth movement that is substantially perpendicular to the up and down movement. Dowels coated with the liquid, water soluble glue are removed from the container and deposited on a drying surface. The dowels are dried by applying heat and a stream of air to the dowels. When the exposed surface of the coat of water soluble glue on the dowels has become essentially tack free but before the coat has dried completely, the dowels are rotated about their longitudinal axes so as to separate any dowels that are stuck together and to free any dowels stuck to the drying surface.

    Abstract: An improved stereolithographic apparatus and method is described. In one embodiment, the improvement includes immersing at least a portion of a part in a volume of a liquid solvent in a vapor degreaser while subjecting the portion to ultrasonic agitation to substantially remove excess resin. Several examples of solvents are provided, including ethanol, and Freon TMS. In a second embodiment, the improvement includes building the part on a layer of liquid resin supported by a volume of a dense, immiscible, and UV transparent intermediate liquid, and integratably immersing at least a portion of the built part in the intermediate liquid, and then either subjecting the immersed portion to ultrasonic agitation to substantially remove excess resin, or subjecting the immersed portion to UV light. Several examples of intermediate liquids are provided, including perfluorinated fluids, such as Fluorinert FC-40, and water-based salt solutions, such as solutions of magnesium sulfate or sodium chloride in water.
