  • Patent number: 4561377
Abstract: Resin evenly applied to the surface of rotatable drive roller applicator is worked into the fibers of a band of fibrous material one ply thick by fiber tension, without abrasion. Resin is pumped to the roller applicator through a spring loaded applicator block in sealing contact with the surface of the applicator. The resin is pumped by a piston and cylinder pump at a rate determined by the rate of rotation of the applicator roller and thereby in accordance with the rate at which the fibrous band is pulled from the surface of the roller.

  • Patent number: 4553501
Abstract: An apparatus for selectively plating on an elongated metal strip, at intervals of a predetermined length in the lengthwise direction, while the strip is being fed in the lengthwise direction. The apparatus includes: strip feeder which discharges the strip from a reel in a direction in which the strip is fed and a sensor for detecting the amount of slack in the strip. A pre-treating station treats the strip, before being plated, while it is continuously fed. A plating station intermittently feeds the strip and selectively plates it, while the strip is stopped during its intermittent movement. An after-treating station treats the strip by again continuously feeding the strip and a strip take-up section winds the strip onto a reel after it has been treated. Tension mechanisms are disposed between the continuous feeding station and the intermittent feeding station to impart a predetermined tensile force to the strip.

  • Patent number: 4510885
Abstract: A spread out foraminous tow of tensioned filamentary filter material is transported through a housing between an upper and a lower rotating cylindrical brush. The upper brush propels atomized liquid plasticizer against the upper side of the tow whereby a certain amount of plasticizer penetrates through the tow and is gathered in the housing within the range of bristles on the lower brush which propels the gathered plasticizer against the underside of the tow. The rate of feed of plasticizer to the upper brush is varied in response to changes in the speed of the tow, and the brushes are arrested when the transporting rolls for the tow are brought to a standstill. The lower portion of the housing constitutes a trough which surrounds the lower half of the lower brush and from which the gathered plasticizer is evacuated when the brushes are idle.

  • Patent number: 4495890
Abstract: A portable coating apparatus is described for use with a paper converting machine such as a corrugated paperboard double-backer. Rotational power to drive gravure, transfer and smoothing rolls is extracted from the converting machine supply web by an S-wrap through the loaded nip between a pair of drive rolls. A low-powered auxiliary drive motor is automatically engaged to keep the gravure and transfer rolls conditioned with coating during brief intervals of web feed cessation. The entire unit is constructed on a space frame that is supported by caster wheels to facilitate movement to and from an appropriate converting machine position which may be between the reeled web supply unwind stand and a web preheating drum station leading into a double-backing machine.

  • Patent number: 4431690
Abstract: A controller for uniformly dispensing fluid onto a substrate in response to movement between the dispensing unit and the substrate has a sensor which senses the rate of relative movement and supplies a signal reflective of the movement to an operation device which in turn generates and supplies a control signal to a regulator. The regulator is positioned in the fluid dispensing system and regulates the flow rate of the fluid to the dispensing unit so that the substrate receives a substantially uniform fluid coating per unit length. The operation device receives the signal from the sensing means and computes the rate of relative movement.

  • Patent number: 4387665
Abstract: A band marking apparatus for producing marking bands at spaced intervals along an insulated wire employs two ink jet dispensers located on opposite sides of the moving wire at longitudinally spaced stations. The dispensers are driven in an oscillatory manner by means of a tachometer engaged with the wire so that the marking bands are produced at uniform intervals regardless of the speed of movement of the wire past the dispensers. To insure proper registration of the band segments produced by the respective dispensers on opposite sides of the wire, an electronic controller for the dispensers includes an adjustable phase selector to regulate the phase relationship of the oscillating dispensers. The controller also includes other circuitry to maintain linear signal relationships and to center the oscillations of the respective dispensers on the wire.

  • Patent number: 4381730
Abstract: The application of fluid additive to a moving filter tow for production of filter rod for cigarettes, is controlled by a system which provides monitoring of rate of application of the additive by weight. Fluid additive, such as plasticizer, is pumped from a measuring cylinder to an applicator booth, excess additive draining back to the cylinder. Pressure in the cylinder is monitored by a transducer and a control circuit is provided to compare the rate of loss of additive from the cylinder (as measured by change in pressure) with a required value and adjust the supply pump by way of a motor and gearbox accordingly. Fluid additive is periodically supplied to the cylinder from a flask and reservoir.

  • Patent number: 4351030
Abstract: A method for repairing faults or defects in the insulation of insulated wire is disclosed together with an apparatus for operation of the method. The method comprises passing insulated wire to be tested for insulation faults at high speed through a fault detector. This fault detector senses the presence of a fault or defect in the wire insulation. Upon sensing a fault, the speed of the wire passing through the apparatus is considerably slowed and the area having the fault is passed through a second fault detector which locate the essentially exact spot of the fault. Thereafter, the wire is automatically moved at the slowed speed through various repair stations where a plastisol coating is applied to the fault, spread evenly over the fault area, cured and then cooled. The cured plastisol repairs the fault and the wire can then proceed at high speed through the apparatus until another fault is detected.
