Abstract: An intake system of an internal combustion engine includes a surge tank communicating with cylinders of the engine via individual intake paths, a vacuum tank connected to the surge tank, a valve that permits or inhibits communication between the surge tank and the vacuum tank, and a control unit that controls opening and closing of the valve. The control unit executes the steps of: (a) opening the valve to communicate the surge tank with the vacuum tank when the surge tank is held in a negative-pressure condition during operation of the engine, and closing the valve upon a lapse of a predetermined period of time so as to hold the vacuum tank in a negative-pressure condition, (b) opening the valve for a predetermined period of time when a condition for starting the engine is satisfied, so as to reduce the pressure in the surge tank, and (c) closing the valve when the engine is started.

Abstract: Chaotic air flow structures in internal combustion engine manifolds may lead to poor combustion performance and hence undesirable emissions such as visible smoke. Manifolds with flow characteristics compromised by other design requirements are especially prone to these poor characteristics. To overcome these, an engine air induction arrangement includes a feed passage having an end portion in a manifold with cylinder ports. The end portion is formed in such a manner that air exiting the end portion via an opening is hindered from travelling away from the cylinder ports. This improves the flow structure and evens air distribution to the cylinder ports, hence improving the combustion process and reducing emission levels.

  • Patent number: 7090552
Abstract: An air intake system for an engine of an outboard motor includes air intake plenum chambers and corresponding air intake passages. Residual condensed fuel that can accumulate in the plenum chamber is guided to lower air intake passages through a slot at a predetermined rate to be delivered to combustion chambers inside the engine. The air intake system can reduce the likelihood that the plenum chambers will accumulate residual fuel above an acceptable amount and can allow the residual fuel to be more slowly delivered to the engine so as to evacuate the fuel without substantially altering the desired air/fuel ratio.

Abstract: The air intake manifold assembly includes a manifold with a plurality of air intake ports for fluid communication with a plurality of engine cylinders, respectively, and a composite flange assembly associated with the air intake ports. The composite flange assembly is adapted to connect the air intake ports with the engine cylinders. The composite flange assembly includes a polymeric flange and a metal reinforcement member joined to the polymeric flange. The metal reinforcement member defines one or more openings and the polymeric flange is joined with the metal reinforcement member, such that at least a portion of the polymeric flange extends through the openings and forms one or more annular surfaces for contacting the engine cylinders. The metal reinforcement member may be integrally molded with the polymeric flange, or joined to the polymeric flange by interference engagement therewith. The polymeric flange may partially encapsulate the metal reinforcement member.

Abstract: A modular intake manifold for an internal combustion engine that has a lower base member, a center runner section, and an upper shell. The lower base member has a series of outlets and witness marks formed within the outlets and attaches to an engine between right and left cylinder heads. The center runner section is situated within the base member for channeling incoming air into the series of outlets in the lower base member. The upper shell attaches to the lower base member, includes a throttle body mounting boss, seals and isolates the individual runner sections of the center runner section, and encloses the intake manifold. The intake manifold may be assembled and disassembled freely. Once disassembled, a different upper shell or center runner section, each having differing features from the components previously removed, may be reattached to the lower base member to alter the engine performance in some way.

  • Patent number: 7021262
Abstract: An air intake system for an outboard motor provides parallel air flow paths between an opening formed in a cowl of the outboard motor and an air intake manifold of an engine under the cowl. A first air path flows in a relatively direct path between the opening in the cowl and the first inlet of a plenum chamber. A second air flow flows in a less direct path from the opening in the cowl to a second inlet of the plenum chamber. The second air flow is used to remove heat from a preselected component, such as an alternator, before it rejoins the first air flow within the cavity of the plenum chamber and is directed, in combination with the first air flow, through an intake air conduit connected to an outlet of the plenum chamber and to an air intake manifold of the engine.

  • Patent number: 6807935
Abstract: An intake pipe (10) for an internal combustion engine composed of shells (11a, 11b) in which the geometry of the joining surfaces (19) adopts an approximately stepped course in areas with a slight incline relative to to joining force (F). This produces areas with a greater or lesser inclination relative to a joint line (16) indicating the average inclination of the joining surfaces. This results in areas which can be welded with a high degree of stability because of their considerable incline towards the joining force. These areas can then support areas which are less inclined towards the joining force. This allows the shells (11a, 11b) to have strongly curved joining surfaces, which increases the geometric design freedom of the intake pipe and, in particular, makes it possible to manufacture intake pipes with strongly curved intake channels constructed from just two shells.
