    Abstract: A two-stroke, U-type uniflow engine includes a cylinder block forming parallel first and second cylinders and a common combustion chamber connecting the first and second cylinders. First and second pistons are mounted for reciprocal, linear movement within the first and second cylinders respectively. The engine also includes a crank shaft having a crank pin and a one-piece forked connecting rod connecting each of the first and second pistons to the crank pin. The connecting rod is elastically, bilaterally flexible to accommodate variations between a maximum distance between the first and second pistons and a minimum distance between the first and second pistons and is in a relaxed state half-way between the maximum distance and the minimum distance. The central wall has a slot for passage of the connecting rod therethrough and angled notches which correspond to maximum angles of the connecting rod.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to an arrangement for an internal combustion engine. The engine is of the kind which has a number of working cylinders (1, 2, 3, 4), each of which communicating with a corresponding auxiliary cylinder (5, 6, 7, 8). Each working cylinder has a working piston (9, 10, 11, 12) which is so arranged as to execute a reciprocating motion and, via a connecting rod (9a, 10a, 11a, 12a), the working piston is operatively connected to a first crankshaft (17). Each auxiliary cylinder (5-8) has an auxiliary piston (13, 14, 15, 16) which is so arranged as to execute a reciprocating motion and via a connecting rod (9a-12a), the auxiliary piston is operatively connected to a second crankshaft (18). Acting between the aforementioned crankshafts is a device (19, 20, 21) to ensure that the motion of the auxiliary piston (13-16) occurs in a relation to the motion of the working piston (9-12), and to provide angular displacement between the shafts (20, 21).

    Abstract: The present disclosure relates to internal combustion engines of the kind comprising two working cylinders arranged in vertical side-by-side parallel relationship, there being two oppositely working pistons in each cylinder, and the movement of the four pistons being transmitted to a common drive shaft between the cylinders. The top pistons in each cylinder are connected to piston rods which in turn are secured to a crosshead and which crosshead has a pivotal connection for a connecting rod the other end of which is connected to drive a drive shaft. The lower or bottom two pistons are in like manner connected through a crosshead to the drive shaft. Fuel injection occurs at the mid-point of each cylinder between each of the two pistons in each cylinder. As to each cylinder intake air is ported in above the injector and exhaust air is ported out beneath the injector.

    Abstract: A two stroke diesel engine requiring a minimum of one pair of cylinders is constructable in multiple cylinder pairs. Each cylinder contains two oppositely working pistons. Four pistons drive, without rocking couples, opposite sides of a single crankshaft having three crankpins. Two paired cylinders are interconnected through and share a common precombustion chamber insuring cylinder pressure equalization and require only one fuel injector. The valveless engine has piston controlled intake and exhaust ports and crank phasing insures that exhaust ports are opened and closed prior to the respective opening and closing of the intake ports rendering the uniflow scavenged cylinders superchargeable. The precombustion chamber is optionally made variable in volume to simultaneously provide a variable compression ratio to both cylinders without affecting piston geometry or stroke.

    Abstract: In an internal combustion engine, two opposed pistons of equal radius are slidably mounted in a cylinder and respectively connected to cranks of unequal throws mounted for rotation at oppositely disposed cylinder ends in a common crankcase. The pistons are adjustable in opposing linear travel to define a flexible cylinder-head, the relative piston positions of piston proximity establishing a range of compressions therebetween correspondable to the respective compression-ignitions of a plurality of available fluid fuels. The cranks are gear connected and similarly offset from the cylinder's longitudinal centerline to eliminate dead centers, produce higher combustion pressures at more effective crank angles, and coordinate the pistons' relative linear speeds in exhaust, air intake, fuel injection, compression and power production in two cycle operation of the engine.

    Abstract: An air control valve (20, 21) is coupled to the minimum volume region of each cylinder (11, 12) in an internal combustion engine. The open interval of the valves during each engine cycle is controlled responsive to the throttle (FIG. 2) to equalize the air-fuel ratio. The clearance of the pistons is also adjusted responsive to the throttle (FIGS. 3A and 4A) to equalize the compression pressure during engine operation. Specifically, in an engine with two cylinders each having opposing pistons, the coupling systems between the piston rods and the crankshaft exhibit diagonal symmetry (FIG. 1).
