Patent number: 6401702Abstract: A combustion chamber in a reciprocating-piston internal combustion engine having at least one inlet duct and at least one outlet duct is formed by a cylinder head and piston each having respective annular squish surfaces for acceleration of fresh gases. A mixture guide element having a recess in its top adjoins the piston crown and the inlet duct to the cylinder is arranged to cause fresh gases to flow with a circulatory movement into the combustion chamber. The configuration increases power output while reducing pollution emissions.Type: GrantFiled: May 3, 1999Date of Patent: June 11, 2002Inventor: Kurt König

Patent number: 6273043Abstract: A plate for mounting a rocker arm assembly on an internal combustion engine having hemispherical combustion chambers is disclosed. The plate has a lower surface which mounts to the head of the engine. First and second surface portions are arranged in parallel, spaced apart relation opposite the lower surface. The first and second surface portions provide mounting surfaces for individual rocker arm stands on which the rocker arms are rotatably mounted. The stands are oriented to extend at an angle to the plane of the plate by angularly orienting the first and second surface portions. Mounting the rocker arms in this manner allows them to engage the push rods and valve stems at respective points of contact which remain over the centerlines of the push rods and valve stems and push true along the line of motion of these components. This arrangement eliminates side loads on the push rods and valve stems and results in increased engine performance.Type: GrantFiled: March 16, 2000Date of Patent: August 14, 2001Inventor: Raymond A. Patent number: 5826567Abstract: In a two-stroke internal combustion engine, total hydrocarbon (THC) exhaust is decreased as a result of small structural changes and without loss of output power. A Schnurle scavenging-type combustion chamber has a hemispherical main surface and an annular skirt-like squish band, and a spark plug is disposed for a spark point to be substantially at the center of the combustion chamber. The squish band has minimized width.Type: GrantFiled: April 10, 1997Date of Patent: October 27, 1998Assignee: Kioritz CorporationInventors: Yukio Sakaguchi, Noboru Nagai, Shigeru Sato, Yasuharu Sato

Patent number: 5076219Abstract: A rotary bell (36) driven by a hollow shaft (42) and a pinion (46) selectively exposes intake and exhaust ports of the cylinder head (23). The bell (36) delimits a substantially hemispherical combustion chamber (26) and has a progression face (62) which partially protects the piston (1) from the expansion pressure near the top dead center, that is to say when the pressure variation is the most abrupt. The invention is used for improving the combustion, reducing the wear and increasing the operating comfort.Type: GrantFiled: April 12, 1990Date of Patent: December 31, 1991Inventor: Jacques Pellerin

Patent number: 5007394Abstract: A combustion chamber, designed for compression ignition internal combustion engines, solves the problem of distribution and whirling of fuel mixture in the combustion chamber of the engine and from this the resulting easier ignition of fuel mixture, optimum increase in the combustion pressures with optimum layout of the valve gear and the intake and exhaust channels in a simplified design of the cylinder head enabled by the larger eccentricity of the injection jet. A rotary combustion chamber is formed in the piston head, the bottom of the chamber formed by a rotary peripheral surface and rotary internal surface with a circular barrier. Ratios between the depth of the rotary peripheral surface and the depth of the top of the barrier, the largest diameter of the rotary internal surface and the largest diameter of the rotary peripheral surface, and the depth of both rotary surfaces are defined in specific ranges.Type: GrantFiled: May 10, 1990Date of Patent: April 16, 1991Assignee: AVIA koncernInventors: Jaroslav Brychta, Eduard Lutisan, Vladimir Jirkovsky

Patent number: 4484550Abstract: Internal combustion engine with at least one combustion chamber produced within a cylinder head or similar device, it being possible to feed a fuel-and-air mixture into said combustion chamber through two inlet valves arranged in the cylinder head and to discharge from the said combustion chamber exhaust gases through two exhaust valves arranged in the cylinder head, with the invention also relating to a method of producing such a combustion chamber by means of a casting process. The invention is characterized in that the combustion chamber (1) consists of four cavities (4,5,6,7) distributed in quadrants with a circular plane forming part of base plane (8) of cylinder head (2), in that each individual cavity (4-7) has a shape which is in the main rotationally symmetrical and in that the cavities (4-7) overlap one another, whereby arc-shaped transitions are formed between cavities (4-7) in base plane (8).Type: GrantFiled: February 25, 1982Date of Patent: November 27, 1984Assignee: Saab-Scania AktiebolagInventors: Bengt G.
