Patent number: 7654259Abstract: A fireplace comprised of a burning chamber having an opening to a room and a vertically lifting door having a top edge, a bottom edge and opposing side edges. The door narrows in width from the top edge to the bottom edge to provide a keystone-shaped door. A frame is fitted in front of the burning chamber. The frame includes guide tracks configured to accept the edges of the door. A drive mechanism is provided to raise and lower the door within the guide tracks. The guide tracks may further incorporate a high temperature gasket to prevent airflow and promote energy efficiency when the door is closed.Type: GrantFiled: September 20, 2007Date of Patent: February 2, 2010Inventor: Lawrence Royce Allen

Patent number: 5878807Abstract: A flow controllable unit includes a pair of spaced upper and lower sheets. A plurality of elongated partitions are sandwiched between the upper and lower sheets to define a plurality of fluid passages. The partitions have an intermediate region and opposite lateral sides. The partitions are secured to the upper and lower sheets so that the intermediate region is movable relative to the upper and lower sheets. When a pressure increase occurs within the passages, the intermediate region of the partitions is bent or deformed to allow the upper and lower sheets to be moved away from each other. This movement increases the effective cross sectional area of the passages to accommodate such a pressure increase. The partitions thus provide a pressure relief function.Type: GrantFiled: February 12, 1997Date of Patent: March 9, 1999Inventor: Kei Takahashi

Patent number: 5167219Abstract: A frame assembly (10) for a fireplace opening (12) comprises a frame member (24) and a clip (26). The frame member (24) includes segments (28, 30, 32, and 34) of discrete length that are fitted to sidewall portions (14, 16, 18, and 20) of the fireplace opening (12). The frame member (24) has semicircular channel (46) and an access opening (48) to the channel that are directed longitudinally along the length of the frame member (24). The clip (26) includes a lip (72) that is sized to be received within the semicircular channel (46) of the frame member (24), the clip (26) being slidable or otherwise positionable at desired locations along the length of any of the segments (28, 30, 32, and 34). The clip (26) extends outwardly from the frame member (24) for attachment to the sidewall portions (14, 16, 18, and 20) of the fireplace opening ( 12) by a fastener (90) that extends through an aperture (76) in the clip (26).Type: GrantFiled: March 14, 1991Date of Patent: December 1, 1992Assignee: Design Specialties, Inc.Inventor: Robert J. Patent number: 5139011Abstract: An unvented gas-fired heater assembly including a base having a gas burner mounted thereon in a combustion area. Gas logs are disposed in the combustion area for heating by the gas burner. A duct assembly is provided which directs heated air from the heater assembly, and the duct assembly is height adjustable to change the height at which air is discharged from the unit. All of the components of the heater are assembled as a unit so that the unit is easily insertable and mountable in an enclosure sure as a fireplace.Type: GrantFiled: September 13, 1991Date of Patent: August 18, 1992Assignee: Martin Industries, Inc.Inventor: W. Patent number: 5052371Abstract: An improved guillotine-type door for a fireplace enclosure. An improved guillotine-type door, characterized by the fact that it opens by rotating around a lower pivoting axis (15), the ends of which are lower fingers (13) for guidance along vertical glides, the said lower fingers receiving the end attachment of the movable connection to the auxiliary mechanical device (31) for maneuvering, and being immobilized in the bottom lower position by a holding device (22), and by the fact that each vertical glide has a device for lateral disengagement at the level of each upper finger (14), for the purpose of allowing the door to be inclined, then pivoted around the lower axis (15). This invention is of interest for manufacturers of fireplace enclosures.Type: GrantFiled: October 24, 1988Date of Patent: October 1, 1991Assignee: Fondis, S.A.Inventor: Richard Robert

Patent number: 4884556Abstract: A prefabricated zero clearance fireplace includes a combustion chamber having a front opening, a glass door sized and shaped for positioning over and sealing the opening and a guide system for guiding vertical movement of the door between a lowered position over the opening and a raised position. The guide system includes tracks that are inwardly offset at their lowermost ends so that the door seals the combustion chamber without friction as the door is raised and lowered. Counterweights permit the door to be easily raised and lowered. For safety, the counterweights cause the door to automatically raise if it is pushed outwardly from the inside. The door is hinged for pivoting outwardly about a vertical axis in the lowered position. An optional motor can be provided for raising and lowering the door. A convection chamber surrounding the combustion chamber permits circulation and heating of room air.Type: GrantFiled: November 17, 1988Date of Patent: December 5, 1989Assignee: Vermont Castings, Inc.Inventors: Frank Alden, James A. Wyatt
