Abstract: A method is disclosed for cleaning the shell side of the core of a heat exchanger formed of a set of tubes passing through transverse plates which include two end plates and at least one baffle plate. A hole is first formed in an end plate in a region between core tubes. A lance is next inserted into through the hole and used to jet the section of the core between the end plate and the first baffle plate. A boring tool inserted through the hole in the end plate is then used to drill a hole in the baffle, allowing the cleaning process to be repeated for further sections of the core.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for cleaning a showerhead and other chamber components used in a chemical vapor deposition process are provided. The methods comprise establishing a thermal gradient in a chamber having a showerhead assembly with deposited material thereon, providing a halogen containing cleaning gas to the chamber, wherein the thermal gradient causes a turbulent or convective flow of the cleaning gas, removing the coating of deposited material from the showerhead assembly by reacting the halogen containing cleaning gas with the deposited material, and exhausting reaction by-products from the chamber.

  • Patent number: 8088228
Abstract: A method and system for cleaning foreign material from a fluid reservoir of an implantable medical device, the fluid reservoir being substantially enclosed in an interior portion of the implantable device and accessible from an environment exterior of the implantable device through a penetrable septum. An elongated member having a first end and a second end is engaged with a source of ultrasonic energy capable of imparting vibrations to the first end. The septum is penetrated by the elongated member in a manner such that the first end extends into the fluid reservoir, and the second end does not extend into the reservoir. The ultrasonic energy source is activated to impart vibrations into the reservoir via the elongated member first end, in an amount sufficient to break up the foreign material into particulates, which can then be removed from the reservoir.

Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for pasteurizing milk or other fluids, and for cleaning and disinfecting processing passageways prior to and after the milk processing. The disclosed pasteurization systems and methods have very low impact on the characteristics of raw, unpasteurized milk (e.g., texture, flavor, and/or nutritional value). For example, some systems and methods utilize a pump that operates at a very low flow rate (e.g., about 1 gallon per minute (GPM)) to prevent mechanical adulteration of the raw milk. Disclosed systems and methods for cleaning and disinfecting the fluid passageways also utilize a low-flow rate, and can use the same low flow pump that is utilized during pasteurization. A pressure pulser allows pressure to build up within the fluid passageways despite the low flow, and then releases the pressure to purge air from the passageways and to cause their interior surfaces to contact the cleaning fluid.

  • Patent number: 8083861
Abstract: An apparatus and method for cleaning passageways and the like with a two-phase mixture of gas under pressure and an aqueous cleaning solution. The two-phase cleaning mixture is generated in a module and is passed out of the module at a predetermined rate that determines droplet size, velocity and droplet density at the pipeline surface to be cleaned. The droplets impact the walls of the passageway to be cleaned, thereby fragmenting, eroding and removing contaminants in said passageway. These are then flushed out of the passageway by the two-phase flow. The flow of cleaning solution can be steady or pulsed. The apparatus and process include a clean-in-place system that is useful in food, beverage, pharmaceutical and similar process industries.

Abstract: A sewer pipe is cleaned of collected solids by providing a water supply hose at a first location on the pipe and by driving a jet nozzle head to a second location along the pipe using jets directed along the pipe. At the second location the head is changed for a second head attached to a cable and is pulled back to the first location by the hose. The nozzle is then pulled back to the second location by pulling the cable while nozzles directed along the pipe toward the second location drive the solids forwardly to the second location for extraction.
