Abstract: The invention relates to a rotary drum in which the hygienic status of pourable solids separated from liquid cattle manure is modified by aerobic heating in such a manner that said solids can be reused as bedding in cattle sheds. The object of the invention is to obtain a high loading factor amounting to 60-70% filling of the drum which is located horizontally for installation in an insulated container. In accordance with the invention, the loaded solid is kept in a chamber and is only transferred to the drum when there is no solid surrounding the chamber. The crucial element is a flap of the chamber which only opens and closes in this area. If there is any solid resting on the outside of the flap then opening of the flap is prevented.

  • Patent number: 5671762
Abstract: A decontamination system for particulate matter is provided. The system has a fluid treatment chamber within which three screw-type augers operate to mix hydrocarbon laden soil with treating fluid for removing the hydrocarbon therefrom. The treating fluid is maintained in a fluid reservoir and is circulated into and out of the treatment chamber. The fluid is heated by a direct and an indirect heater. The hydrocarbons are released from the soil and allowed to float to the top where they collect and are removed for recycle or disposal. The decontaminated soil is removed from the treating fluid by a drag slat conveyor that permits excess treating fluid to drain therefrom and be collected for reuse in the decontamination system. A cyclone separator is included to spin off suspended fines within the recovered treating fluid. Optionally, a fluid press may be employed to compress additional amounts of treating fluid from the decontaminated matter.

  • Patent number: 5669288
Abstract: A blancher or cooler has a drum made up of a plurality of stainless steel perforated panels. The drum is rotatably mounted within a water tank, and has an auger for progressing food products from an inlet to an outlet. The panels are bolted between C-channels which are welded to end plates to define the drum, and steel angle brackets clamp the panels in place. The angle brackets have slots with enlarged openings at one end. For periodic cleaning the nuts which clamp the brackets to the C-channels are loosened part way, the brackets are removed by passing the bolt heads through the enlarged openings, and the unclamped panels are allowed to hang freely on the C-channels. In this condition all regions of the panels are accessible to cleaning spray as the drum is rotated. The brackets are rapidly replaced and the nuts fully tightened to return the apparatus to service.

  • Patent number: 5641360
Abstract: Treatment of sewage solids, sand, rubbish and the like, especially for the dumping and/or incineration with a reduced pollutant and moisture content, or similar disposal with the mechanical separation of the solids from a solid-liquid mixture, in which, to obtain the best possible dumping and incineration properties according to moisture and pollutant content, there is a vortex device with the aid of which organic substances adhering to the solids are dissolved and removed with the liquid, preferably to a further biological waste water treatment system, where the treatment of dirty waste water is concerned; in a similar manner, sand, rubbish and similar substances are treated even if they do not form part of waste water.

  • Patent number: 5637152
Abstract: An apparatus and method for removing hydrocarbons from soil is disclosed. A gradient force machine pulverizes contaminated soils, which are then mixed with release agents in a mixing tank. A water-filled separation unit receives the mixed soil, the unit having a plurality of counter-rotating augers to aid in the breakdown of the mixed soil to solid, water and hydrocarbon components. A washing container receives the solid component from the separation unit, the container having a diagonally-disposed, enclosed auger for outputting a washed solid component. Hydrocarbons that have floated to the top of the separation unit and washing container are removed by a vacuum system.

  • Patent number: 5632195
Abstract: A food processing apparatus having a tank with an inlet and an outlet, a liquid bath received therein, a rotary auger having a plurality of spaced apart flights for urging food product toward the outlet, and a baffle between a pair of adjacent auger flights for lifting and/or agitating (1) food product and (2) the liquid for increasing heat transfer between the liquid and food product, with the baffle being of substantially non-straight construction for minimizing the force of impact between food product and the baffle. Each baffle has a leading portion and a trailing portion with at least one of the portions being of non-straight construction. Preferably, each baffle has at least one bend or curve for minimizing impact force. The bend or curve is adjacent the leading portion of the baffle, which is that portion of the baffle that typically first comes into contact with food product during operation.

Abstract: A blancher having a tank and an elongate generally cylindrical and hollow perforate drum rotatably received in the tank with the drum including an inlet end plate with a food product inlet opening adjacent an end of a support core that is spaced from the inlet opening by at least two braces of non-straight construction to allow food product to enter the drum without being obstructed adjacent the inlet opening. The braces increase the structural rigidity of the drum enabling blanchers to be constructed having axial lengths greater than 24 feet and drum diameters greater than 72 inches while also being of open throat construction and having an inlet opening diameter greater than the outer diameter of the core.

  • Patent number: 5546967
Abstract: An apparatus for washing balls in a cleaning fluid includes a container for storing soiled balls, a cleaning unit for washing and rinsing the balls, and a clean ball hopper for storing washed balls. A soiled ball conveyor conveys the balls from the soiled ball hopper to the cleaning unit, while a pneumatic conveyor conveys clean balls from the cleaning unit to the clean ball hopper. A fluid supply system provides recirculated cleaning and rinsing fluids to the cleaning unit, and helps prevent the balls from becoming clogged in foam. The cleaning unit includes three vertical substantially transparent cylindrical housings. Upper and lower enclosures are opaque and remove from sight the top and bottom longitudinal axial ends of the cylindrical housings to provide an exciting visual effect as the balls are conveyed through the transparent elongated housings.

  • Patent number: 5460194
Abstract: A process and apparatus for the remediation of soil is provided with a plug flow of soil and counter-current wash of water. The contaminant-containing soil with water is first treated to disengage the contaminant from the soil and form a liquid phase containing water and contaminant. The treated soil and liquid phase is continuously introduced into a wash zone at a first end of the wash zone, and the soil and the liquid phase are conveyed in successive and discrete portions through the wash zone between the first end of the wash zone and a second end of the wash zone to provide an essentially plug-flow of the soil through the wash zone.

  • Patent number: 5429041
Abstract: A water tank is divided into a first heated compartment and a second heated compartment by an insulated baffle. A perforated cylinder is mounted within the tank and has a first segment which extends within the first heated tank compartment and a second segment which extends within the second heated tank compartment. Portions of a helical auger extend within each cylinder segment. Heated water at a first temperature is supplied to the first heated compartment by a first heated water manifold, and heated water at a second, higher temperature is supplied to the second heated compartment by a second heated water manifold. Mixing of the two temperatures of water is prevented by the insulating baffle. Food product is caused to traverse the length of the first heated compartment by the auger, and is transferred over the baffle into the second heated compartment by a lifting flight which elevates food product from the water into a chute which discharges into the second heated compartment.
