Abstract: A cane holder for holding upright a walking cane at the side of a bed has a generally planar frame to be inserted between a mattress and a box spring of a bed. A clamp on a side of the frame protrudes to one side of the bed. A walking cane held in the clamp provides a convenient hold for a person rising from the bed. The cane can then be released from the clamp for use as a walking aid away from the bed. A preferred walking cane has a foldable mid-height hand grip in addition to a top handle to provide two holds at different heights on the cane.
Abstract: A leg support for attachment to a crutch for supporting the affected leg of a user, and having a cushioned upper surface. The support is preferably adjustable to a variety of heights on the crutch, and adjustable to position the cushioned upper member at one or more preselected angles for enhanced comfort.

Abstract: The walking aid includes a stick body inclined in the forward-and-backward direction so that the lower end thereof is positioned forward, a support rod installed behind the stick body and inclined so that lower end thereof is positioned backward, and wheels provided on both sides of the lower end of the stick body and on both sides of the lower end of the support rod, steering being carried out by turning the stick body, wherein a rocking mechanism is provided at the wheel installation portion of the stick body to support an axle rotatably with respect to its axis in the forward-and-backward direction. With this kind of structure, even when the stick body is tilted or steered, the axle rocks automatically so that the wheels on both sides remain contact with the ground at all times, whereby it is possible to obtain a stable, easy-to-use walking aid.

The stick is formed by an upper fitting tube and a lower fitting tube fitted into the upper fitting tube. The stageless adjusting device is disposed at top end of the lower fitting tube and includes a movable body and a brake body. The movable body includes two conic bodies and a thread rod connected between the conic bodies. The conic faces of the conic bodies are opposite to each other. The brake body is formed with an annular groove on outer circumference for a rubber ring to insert therein and composed of two semicylindrical halves. Each half is disposed with a thread for screwing with the thread rod of the movable body.
Abstract: A combined seat and cane device comprised of a hollow tube with a handle pivotally connected at a top end, and a plurality of four seat support members with an attached fabric seat is removably inserted in a cavity at the top end in a manner to be deployed as required for forming a seat framework. The device further includes an alarm system for causing a detectable signal to be produced as an incident of the frame being repositioned from the first orientation into a second orientation.
Abstract: A portable step stool assembly including a step stool having a bottom surface adapted to be supported on a generally horizontal support surface and having a top surface adapted to be stepped on by a person. The assembly further includes an elongate resiliently flexible handle which is sufficiently stiff to remain straight when supported from one of its end portions. One end portion of the handle is attached to the step stool with the handle normally projecting upwardly past its top surface to a position where its opposite end portion can be grasped by a user of the step stool assembly. The handle is resiliently flexible in any direction normal to its longitudinal axis which restricts injury should a person fall against the handle and facilitates storage of the step stool assembly.
Abstract: An athletic pole adapted for minimizing injuries to the hand and wrist of the user in the event of an accident. The pole includes a handle having an enlarged handle base, a shaft extending from the handle and including a proximal end adjacent the handle, a distal end, and an enlarged shaft base on the proximal end that normally engages the handle base. The pole also includes an attachment device for attaching the handle to the shaft and a biasing device exerting sufficient tension on the attachment device for biasing the attachment device to maintain the handle base and the shaft base in a mating, coaxial position during normal use. The periphery of the handle base and the periphery of the shaft base collectively form a fulcrum point for permitting controlled, tensioned articulation of the handle relative to the shaft. Such articulation results when a predetermined bending force is applied to the pole that is sufficient to overcome the tension of the biasing device on the attachment device.
Abstract: An improvement to a standard three-wheeled walker to render it usable by persons having the use of only one arm for support, moving, and braking the walker is provided. The braking system for use on two of the three wheels includes a crossbar having a brake handle mounted thereon and a section of brake wire having one end connected to the brake handle. The other end of the brake wire is connected to a bifurcated "Y" brake wire connector, the ends of which are adapted to apply pressure to the tires of the respective wheels while the user still maintains control of the walker.

Abstract: A step-over cane assembly for facilitating ambulatory movement of users afflicted with certain conditions, such as Parkinson's disease, is disclosed herein. The cane assembly includes an elongate cane member with a tip end and a handle end, the tip end being disposed to contact a walking surface and the handle end providing a grip area to a user. A step-over member is coupled to a lower portion of the elongate cane member proximate the tip end, the step-over member inducing the user to take walking steps when deployed transverse to the elongate member. The step-over member may be rotatably coupled to the elongate cane member, thereby allowing the step-over member to be deployed in an extended position transverse to the elongate member and in a retracted position substantially parallel to the elongate member. When deployed in the extended position, the step-over member serves as a walking obstacle to Parkinson's users of the cane.
Abstract: An arm extending assembly for attachment to a walking appliance such as a walking cane, to enable the appliance to be retrieved without requiring the user to bend over. The device extends an extendible arm upwardly in a direction normal to the surface upon which the walking appliance has fallen. The arm is extended responsive to impact of the assembly on the surface, such as the ground. The arm extending assembly includes a base member for attachment to a cane, an actuating mechanism including a spring biased rotatable arm for imparting rotation to the extendible arm, a spring biased locking mechanism for releasably locking the actuating mechanism to the housing and ground engaging means operatively connected to the spring biased locking mechanism for release of the locking mechanism to permit rotation of the rotatable arm of the actuating mechanism and, thus, rotation of the extendible arm responsive to impact of said ground engaging means with the ground or surface.

Abstract: A portable banister, for use by a person in climbing or descending a staircase having a plurality of steps which are separated by risers, comprising a foot portion, a handgrip portion, and mast members extending between the foot portion and handgrip portion. The foot portion is stepped to match the contours of the staircase. In particular, the foot portion includes a pair of horizontal slabs which rest against sequential steps, and a vertical member which extends between the horizontal slabs and rests against the riser therebetween. The horizontal slabs extend parallel to each other. The distance between the horizontal slabs is adjustable to match the staircase. The mast members each extend between one of the horizontal slabs and the handgrip portion, and are each adjustable in length to vary the height and angle of the handgrip portion for the comfort and safety of the user.

The inventive device includes an adjustable size support base including first and second base portions adjustably secured to each other. First and second support feet are connected to the first base portion and the second base portion and are adjustable relative thereto in order to adjust the height of the support base. An adjustable handle is pivotally attached to the support base in order to make it easier to use the device, and the handle is biased by a spring to a generally vertical position.
Abstract: The present invention comprises a cane assembly for the visually handicapped, to permit maximum tactile and auditory information between terrain touched by said cane assembly and a user thereof. The cane assembly includes a tapered metal cane shaft having an upper or proximalmost end and a lower or distalmost end. A metal handle with a finger groove is secured to the upper end of the shaft and a solid elliptically shaped plastic tip is secured to the lowermost tip of the shaft. The elliptically shaped solid attachable tip permits the cane assembly to provide superior touch and sound from all terrain encountered, without the likelihood of snagging on a crack or the like.

The crutch sling assembly comprising a sling seat for engaging at least one of a buttock and crotch area of a sling user and supporting a portion of the weight of a user of said crutch sling assembly. Abstract: A walker having an expandable seat adapted to accommodate users of varying body sizes to enter the walker and get in and out of the seat. The walker comprises a front cross bar having two tubular ends, and two side frames rotatably connected to each of the tubular ends of the front cross bar, so that the side frames can be rotated inward and outward with respect to the front cross bar. A telescopic upper crossbar is mounted between the side frames at the upper horizontal tubing for limiting the angular movement of the side frames when a desired position has been selected. The expandable seat includes a tubular rear end, to which a pair of seat support rods are slidably mounted. A bracket is rotatably attached to each of the sliding rods for engaging the side braces of the side frame when the seat is folded down in the horizontal position.

Various ground engaging tip members are interchangeably attachable to the distal end zone of the main shaft and a battery powered lamp, operable by a switch, directs light downwardly to illuminate the ground area where the tip member is to be placed while walking.

Abstract: A special configured rehabilitating quadcane implement providing major advancements in the art; including: a.) positive vertical incremental adjustment of staff height to suit user; b.) the staff is readily rotatable 180.degree., so as to facilitate both left and right hand usage; c.) during final stages of rehib-recovery the cane-staff may be extracted from the quadleged-base spider via provision of a special safety-lock turn-flap device, enabling monocane use; d.) each of the quadlegs are independently adjustable as to ground-spread, thereby accommodating different stability requirements of patients. Abstract: A patient support device, particularly a cane, includes a fifth leg that extends outwardly from a central portion of a base assembly at a region intermediate the first, second, third, and fourth legs. The fifth leg provides increased balance and stability for the user. Moreover, the base assembly includes a one-piece member constructed from a molded plastic composite material to reduce manufacturing costs. Additionally, the fifth leg is slightly recessed relative to the remaining four legs so that the patient's weight is evenly distributed to the perimeter of the support area defined by the base member.
Abstract: A dual handled walking-assist and uprisal-assist device is disclosed having the handles spaced at a predetermined distance to provide a stable structure for rising from and lowering to a seated position, in addition to serving as a walking aid. The walking- and uprisal-assist device has a structure having a first handle or first pair of handles which are useful whenever a user is in a standing position. A second handle or second pair of handles are spaced a preselected distance from the first handle or handles and at a preselected distance from the bottom of the device. An infirmed user can use the second handle or handles as a grip to push against when the user is rising from a chair. The second handle or handles are connected to one or more load-bearing shafts and the geometrical centers of the handles are positioned relative to the load-bearing shafts to provide a stable structure when used for uprisal and walking.
Abstract: A height adjustable cane includes an upper tubular member configured to slidably receive a second tubular member in a telescoping manner. A plurality of apertures are formed in the first tubular member which allows a button of a snap button assembly to pass therethrough and lock the tubular members against relative movement. Using the push-button assembly and the telescopic feature, the length of the cane may be adjusted. Increased stability between the tubular members is provided by a cam locking assembly including a housing receiving a cam member. The cam member includes a lever and a raised camming surface that selectively engages an outer surface of the second tubular member.

A prepositionable height fastener cooperates with a coupling collar, both of which are disposed on the central leg to predetermine the amount of extension. Abstract: The present invention relates to an elongate support element, such as a walking stick, crutch or umbrella stick, comprising an elongate hollow stick which is provided on its underside with two supporting legs which are tiltable between a folded-in position and a folded-out, active position, wherein on the upper part of the stick an actuating element is arranged for actuating the supporting legs and the actuating element is connected to a drive member extending through the hollow stick, wherein the drive member comprises a rod extending through the hollow stick and provided on its underside with a gear rack in addition to pinions each connected to a leg and engaging in the gear rack.According to a preferred embodiment a stick is therefore provided on its underside with a piece in which the legs are rotatably mounted and in which the transverse wall is arranged through which the rod extends, which transverse wall also functions as stop means for limiting the movement of the legs in the folded-out position.

More specifically, the crutch comprises a crutch main body including an armpit rest at its upper end, a foot portion at its lower end, and a handle grip at its intermediate portion. A vertical length or width W of the armpit rest is increased, and a portion of the armpit rest to be held beneath a shoulder of a user is formed to have a substantially triangular cross section so that it has curved surfaces which conform with contours of an inner side of an upper arm and a breast side wall of the user.

In the left half portion of the receiving chamber, an electrical components set is attached and retained thereof. Abstract: A walker adapter used to prevent an individual's legs from crossing while using a walker to enhance ambulatory skills, the walker adapter comprising an adjustable main member having opposite ends, a posterior attachment mechanism secured at a right angle to one end of the adjustable main member, and an anterior attachment assembly secured at the opposite end thereof. Abstract: A portable folding grab bar device for aiding a person to stand from a seated position having four primary components, a base, a support column which pivots with respect to the base, a pivot mechanism, and a handle which the user grabs to rise from a seated position. The support column pivots with respect to the base to enhance portability. The base is designed for the user to stand upon while the handle is grasped, thus the users own body weight is used to stabilize the device in use. The device is constructed from lightweight materials to further enhance portability. The pivot mechanism is designed to prevent over rotation of the support column and to remain rigid and stable after extended use. The pivot mechanism includes a sliding locking block and is inexpensive to manufacture. The handle has a variable extension member so the height of the handle from the base may be varied to suit the users height or reach.

Abstract: An adjustable-length cane with a grasping apparatus includes a trigger at one end of the cane and a finger at the other end. The trigger and the finger are pivotally mounted within the body of the cane and have portions extending out of the cane body through slots. A cord and pulley system within the cane body connects the trigger and the finger so that when the trigger is activated, the finger closes or opens to either grasp or release objects. The finger includes a locking clip or similar device which holds the cord at a preselected point. This feature allows the user to vary the amount that the finger opens, and it allows the grasping apparatus to operate optimally irrespective of the length of the cane. The grasping apparatus may be locked in the closed position by appropriately sliding a sleeve into a locking zone on the trigger.

Abstract: A controller for wheeled vehicles includes a mechanism which selectively shifts the vehicle between a mobile and a stable state. The vehicle may be a walker for easing an operator's efforts in walking and includes a selectively actuable stabilizer which fixes the position of the walker or releases it for rolling motion, thus providing a stable state or a mobile state, respectively. An actuator such as a button, pressure sensor, or lever, electrically and/or mechanically actuates a stabilizer brake mechanism to engage or release the brake and thereby allow the walker's mobility to be controlled when the actuator operates the brake to stabilize or to slow the motion of the walker. Preferably, lift applied to the vehicle itself releases the brake and allows mobility. The actuator may control an electrically actuated braking mechanism, in response to a sensor such as a strain gauge that may be adjusted to the needs of the patient; alternatively, lifters may be provided to act in response to the lifting force.
Abstract: The invention relates to a pole shaft for a cross-country ski pole. Longitudinal and transverse fiber layers are used for providing a hollow shaft, whose cross section changes progressively downwards into a droplet shape and, below the mid-way point of a shaft, the length of a droplet shape in relation to its width increases while the cross-sectional area diminishes. By virtue of the droplet shape, the pole can be given more rigidity in skiing direction, whereby the bottom end of a pole can be made lighter while improving the aerodynamics of a pole.

Abstract: A multipurpose cane which includes a hollow handle, and a retractable walking-stick fixedly secured to the hollow handle fixe, wherein the hollow handle defines a storage chamber for keeping personal accessories, and holds a lamp and battery assembly controlled by a switch to produce light for illumination and/or warning.
Abstract: A cane has an engaging member for securing the cane to downwardly facing surfaces. The engaging member is attached to the shaft of the cane and is movable axially with respect to the shaft. Urging means is provided for urging the engaging member toward a top end of the shaft. When the engaging member is placed below a downwardly facing surface, the urging means urges the engaging member upwardly until a contacting surface of the engaging member contacts the downwardly facing surface. The urging means may comprise a coil spring.
Abstract: A safety cane incorporates an ambient light sensitive illumination device for conserving battery power. A tipping detector is also incorporated which sounds an audible alarm after a first time delay. If the cane is not retrieved by the end of the second time delay, the cane broadcasts an initiating instruction to a telephone dialing device.
Abstract: An adjustable cane for physical therapy includes an adjustable base member and an elongated bar member detachably secured to the base member. The bar member comprises an elongated tube member and a longitudinal rod member slidably and adjustably received in the tube member. The base member is composed of a pair of identical base units each of which has an aperture at a center portion adopted to secure the bottom portion of the rod member therein, and a plurality of recesses adopted to secure supporting legs and linking rod members thereat. Whereas the linking rod member permit the supporting legs to be lifted upwardly for storage and to be put down for supporting user's weight.
