    Abstract: In an automotive vehicle, a wire harness includes a wire bundle which is housed in and protected by a corrugated tube. The tube has two end regions circular in cross-section and a central region elliptical or race-track shaped in cross-section. Between the end regions and central region are transition regions of varying cross-sectional shape. When installed in a vehicle, the central region of the wire harness tube is installed along the vehicle floor such that the projection perpendicular to the floor by the central region of the tube is reduced. This results in the wire harness requiring less space in the vehicle. The tube includes a resilient expansion slit which allows a wire bundle to be inserted in or removed from the tube.

The multi-layered metallic pipe includes a metallic pipe having a relatively small plated diameter with a film made of zinc, aluminum or a zinc/aluminum based alloy on the outer circumference of the metallic pipe. A first layer of a polyamide resin, a polyviny fluoride, or a polyvinylidene fluoride having a film thickness of 20 to 50 microns is applied to the plated film. A second layer made of an extrudible resin having a film thickness of 100 microns to 1.0 millimeter and a chipping resistance is coated over the first layer along an entire length of the first layer. The second layer is formed to have stepped portions of different thickness.

    Abstract: A method of forming a flexible spiral-wound tube includes the steps of spiral wrapping at least two webs of material in an overlapping relationship about a mandrel to form a multi-ply tube and advancing the tube along the mandrel and off a reduced diameter portion of the mandrel at a forward end of the mandrel. Advancement of the tube along the mandrel includes rotating the tube as the tube longitudinally moves such that the tube advances in a spiral manner. The method further includes the step of retarding movement of the tube along the reduced diameter portion of the mandrel by providing frictional resistance between the tube and the mandrel to form folds or pleats in the tube so that the tube becomes extremely flexible. As the hose contracts, the unbonded fragments 8 are separated from the outer wall 3 and the spiral hard enforcement 4 and move to the inward direction of the hose, and close the spiral groove 7. Therefore, even a fluid flows to any longitudinal direction, the flexible hose reduces a flow resistance.

In a preferred embodiment, the hose assembly comprises: a standard flexible metal hose with a convoluted metal innercore; two cold-worked tubular end fittings with straight end portions that are inserted into opposite ends of the innercore, whereby stop beads on the tube limit the amounts of insertion and position the fittings; annular welds between crowns of the beads and adjacent flattened convolutions of the innercore that fix the fittings to the hose; and a pair of crimped locking collars or ferrules (carried on the fittings) that are mounted on the hose ends to protect the welds and hold the fittings in place. No prior machining of the inserted end portions of the fittings is needed to secure a stable weld.

    Abstract: A perforated metal center tube is provided for use within an oil, fuel, or hydraulic filter. The tube is fabricated from a perforated metallic sheet formed into a cylinder in which opposite edges thereof are mutually engaged with one another to form a longitudinal multi-layered lockseam. The lockseam is mechanically clinched to inhibit slippage of the mutually engaged edges without the need for welding, soldering or otherwise chemically or adhesively bonding the lockseam. A series of circumferential beads are provided at spaced locations along the length of the tube to provide structural reinforcement. Each bead is formed through lockseam without generating slippage or disengagement of the first and second edges relative to one another. The beads advantageously provide the tube with sufficient structural integrity to withstand typical filtration pressures, with a metallic sheet of relatively thin gauge.

A pair of end fittings are integrally attached to the first and second end portions of the tubular conduit, respectively, using either a solvent welding or temperature welding technique. When using the solvent technique, the plurality of surface irregularities operate to hold additional localized amounts of solvent which further reacts with the plastic in the end fittings and conduit to yield a superior weld.

    Abstract: To reduce turbulence in a fluid flow, especially exhaust gas from automotive internal combustion engines, within a flexible conduit element, a bellows (1, 40, 42) has an internal hose (6) located therein made of woven or knit metal wire. The hose is engaged against the internal corrugations of the bellows (1) and/or a connecting pipe (41) between adjacent bellows (40, 42) to guide the exhaust gases, and dampen vibrations and oscillations, which may become resonant with the corrugations of the bellows, and thereby decrease noise level during the gas flow. The hose (6) is engaged against the inner corrugations (3) of the bellows by, for example, first axially compressing the hose to result in permanent deformation of the wires to a diameter larger than the clear inner diameter of the bellows; by then forcing the hose into the bellows, the hose will resiliently compress and engage against the bellows.

    Abstract: A flexible hose construction and method of making the same are provided, the flexible hose construction comprising an inner corrugated hose made of polymeric material and having a plurality of outwardly convex projections with recesses therebetween and extending from one end thereof to the other end thereof, an outer sleeve of reinforcing material disposed in telescoping relation on the inner hose, and a tube of polymeric material disposed between the sleeve of reinforcing material and the inner hose and extending in a generally straight-line manner from projection to projection of the inner hose so as to tend to prevent the sleeve of reinforcing material from entering into the recesses of the inner hose an amount that would tend to substantially reduce the flexibility characteristics of the inner hose.
