Abstract: A system and method are disclosed for polishing and lubricating an aluminum welding wire. The system and method draw stock aluminum wire from a spool, subject the stock wire to a plurality of drawing and thermal treatment steps to obtain a wire having a final diameter suitable for use in a continuous welding apparatus. Immediately after the final drawing step, the wire is subjected to a polishing and lubricating process in which a cord that is impregnated with a lubricant is passed over the surface of the wire. The cord serves to remove contaminants, such as metal fines, from the surface of the wire, and also to provide a layer of lubricant over the surface of the wire. The resulting wire has an improved appearance, will not clog the automatic welding apparatus, and the lubricant will not contribute adversely to weld porosity in use.

Abstract: A steel wire directly from the rolling mill is formed into a horizontally advancing helix having a succession of upstanding turns. This helix is fed into a horizontally opening end of an elbow and a roller at the short side of the elbow deflects the helix so that it exits from the downwardly opening outlet end of the elbow. An upright cooling tube is provided immediately at this downstream end and has a multiplicity of throughgoing holes each aligned with a respective nozzle for spraying of liquid on the descending coil so as rapidly to cool it and to transform at least the surface of it into martinsite. At the lower end of the tube the cooled coil, at a temperature of C. as compared with the starting temperature of C., is carried horizontally away by a conveyor.

Abstract: An apparatus for simultaneously partially stripping the insulation from the ends of a plurality of wires in a twisted wire cable comprising a first clamp which clamps the midpoint of a length of the twisted wire cable and second and third clamps which clamp the wire ends to position them properly between stripper blades attached to the second and third clamps. The second and third clamps are mounted so they may be slid along a rail. Air activated cylinders pull the second and third clamps in a direction away from the midpoint of the twisted wire cable, partially stripping the insulation. Also disclosed is a modification to the air cylinders which allows the apparatus to simultaneously fully strip and untwist the ends of the wires.

  • Patent number: 4043362
Abstract: Apparatus for cutting and insulation stripping of twisted conductor wire pairs comprises a wire feed mechanism for feeding predetermined lengths of twisted wire pairs into clamping mechanism including a rotatable clamp operable to untwist a predetermined portion of a wire pair. Movable cams operate to position two wires of the pair whereby dual sets of insulation cutting blades, cooperable with the cams, move in to cut preselected lengths of insulation from the trailing end of a wire pair and the leading end of the next wire pair to be formed. Wire cutting blades operate in unison with the insulation cutting blades to cut the wire pair between the respective sets of insulation cuts. Carriage mechanism is operable to move the wire clamps apart to strip the cut insulation from the respective trailing and leading ends of the wire pairs.

Abstract: A terminal applicator for applying terminals in the form of a continuous belt and having a crimping die and a crimping anvil movable relatively towards and away from each other is disclosed. The belt of terminals is fed along a feed path extending behind the dies to present and index the leading terminal on the belt to the dies. After crimping, the dies move relatively away from each other to free the crimped terminal. An ejector means is spaced laterally of the feed path and moves into engagement with the wire and away from the dies, while the other end of the wire is held by a wire clamp, so that the crimped terminal is broken away from, and thereby removed from, the belt. In one embodiment, the wire clamp is movably mounted for lateral movement toward and away from the dies, so that the wire end may be inserted into a closed-barrel terminal prior to the crimping operation.

  • Patent number: 4003413
Abstract: Electrical components having generally parallel leads extending in one direction from one side of their bodies, respectively, are successively transferred to a conveyor means movable through sequential processing stations to prepare the leads for circuit board connection or sequencing preparatory to such connection. Spaced lead grippers on the conveyor means control lead portions adjacent to the bodies of the components. The stations sucessively act to determine the standoff length of the leads from the bodies of the components, reform remaining portions of the leads in coaxial relation while maintaining the standoff length, check for omission of a reformed component from proper position in the series and, upon release from the grippers, tape the coaxial portions of the leads of adjacent components in parallel, side-by-side relation. Preferably, the means for checking reformed component presence also controls turning of a reel for storing the repackaged components.

  • Patent number: 3981333
Abstract: This invention relates to an apparatus facilitating the mechanized manufacture of intermediately tapped electrical transformers. The apparatus winds coils on open ferromagnetic bobbin-type cores automatically by winding wire around the bobbin cores, pulling the tap, if any, and securing the wires so that they will not unwind. The bobbins are manually loaded into a rotatable turret wheel which sequentially positions them in a work station. A motor driven bail engages the wire and causes the wire to be wrapped around the bobbin located at the work station a predetermined number of times. When the number is reached, a solenoid operated hook grasps the wire, pulls the wire away from the bobbin, forming a loop, and is rotated so as to twist the wire as the bail continues to cause a second predetermined number of turns to be wound on the bobbin. The twisting ultimately causes the wire loop between the first and second sets of windings to snap at the hook creating a winding tap.
