  • Patent number: 6499518
Abstract: A safety valve assembly for use with a portable container, such as for dispensing fuel to a vehicular gas tank, where the valve assembly features a pair of fluid sealing members to be manually activated to effect dispensing of the fluid from the container. A first of said sealing members includes a magnetizable float member that further functions to automatically shut-off the fluid dispensing procedure before the receiving receptacle overflows, thus avoiding a problem with unwanted spillage. The second sealing member is activated by applying pressure to the container against the receiving receptacle, whereby premature spillage is further avoided during transporation of the fluid filled container. Finally, a rotatable lock mechanism, in the form of a camming system, is provided.

  • Patent number: 5927350
Abstract: A system for preventing spillage from containers during the filling thereof includes an electrical circuit extending between one or more filling ports of the container and being connected with one or more liquid level sensitive switches within the container. A liquid dispensing apparatus for dispensing liquid into the container is coupled to the circuit so as to be enabled to dispense liquid into the container when the circuit is closed and to be disabled from dispensing liquid into the container when the circuit is opened. The circuit includes electrically isolated leads at each of the one or more filling ports that can be connected with each other so as to complete the circuit at that port when either the filling port is properly capped or the liquid dispensing apparatus is properly coupled to the port.

  • Patent number: 5787942
Abstract: A snap-action flow interrupt device for terminating flow into a cryogenic storage container utilizes the momentum of the incoming liquid spray as a means of maintaining a float in a submerged position until the proper liquid level is attained. The incoming spray of liquid exerts a downward impact force on a surface of the float. The rising liquid level exerts an upward and increasing buoyant force on the float. When the rising liquid in the tank disrupts the spray, the buoyant force snaps the float upwards to interrupt the flow of liquid. The abrupt motion of the float generates a pressure spike and flow reduction, either of which may be easily detected by automatic fill termination devices or by a human operator.

  • Patent number: 5398735
Abstract: A filling regulator for a liquid storage tank of the type according to which a float is displaced vertically in the float chamber provided in the body of the regulator. The regulator includes a deflector slanted over the inner wall of the body and installed above the gate at a far enough distance above the float chamber to allow the gate to be positioned in the full-open position. The deflector includes slanted, spaced-apart blades which are joined at their lower ends by a protective base.

  • Patent number: 5388622
Abstract: A two-stage float actuated shut-off valve for use in underground fuel storage tanks utilizes a drop tube coaxially mounted within the storage tank fill pipe. Fuel flowing into the tank is passed through the drop tube which projects downwardly into the interior of the tank to a valve housing located at the lower end of the drop tube. Floats slidably mounted in a recessed area in the housing outside of the drop tube within the tank independently operate pivoted valve doors to a closed position within the valve housing, a lower float closing one valve door to block a major portion of incoming fuel flow passage when the level of fuel in the storage tank reaches a predetermined first level and a second upper float causing the secondary valve door to overlap an aperture in the main valve door to almost completely close the flow of fuel to the tank.

  • Patent number: 5033519
Abstract: A float actuated valve for automatically shutting off the flow of fluid into a storage tank when the tank is filled to a predetermined level includes a pair of shutter plates movable transversely across the flow passage from an open position wherein the plates are retracted clear of opposite sides of the passage and a fully closed position in which the plates project into and cooperatively block the passage. A spring biased rotary trip plate underlying the shutter plates controls actuation of the shutter plates and may be held by first and second detents in rotative positions locating the shutter plates in the fully closed or a partially closed position. A lower float located within the tank releases the first detent to cause the trip plate to drive the shutter plates from the fully closed to the partially closed position when the level of fluid in the tank rises to a first level.

  • Patent number: 5027870
Abstract: A float chamber located in generally parallel, laterally spaced relationship to the main liquid flow passageway contains superimposed floats that move along a substantially linear path of travel. The floats cooperate with other control components to effect closure of a main valve assembly when the liquid level adjacent the mechanism reaches a preselected first elevation, and to close a bleed valve assembly when the liquid level reaches a second, higher elevation. The main valve assembly includes a movable plate valve that is spring biased toward an open position and that is biased toward a closed position by the force of liquid adjacent thereto and upstream therefrom. A latch and associated catch prevent movement of the valve plate to its closed position until such time as the liquid level reaches the first elevation.

  • Patent number: 4998571
Abstract: An overfill valve apparatus for use in a liquid storage container having a fill pipe includes an upper fill tube and a lower drop tube. A closure valve is positioned intermediate the fill tube and the drop tube. The valve includes a valve head moveable between a first open position and a second closed position. A float is attached to the valve head and is moveable from a first position when the container liquid level is less than a predetermined level and a second position when the container fills with fluid to a predetermined level. Movement of the float towards its second position produces movement of the valve head toward its closed position. The float also is moveable within an envelope corresponding to a diameter less than the diameter of the fill pipe to facilitate apparatus installation and removal. The valve head is mounted internally of a hollow shell.
