Splitting Machine Patents (Class 144/193.1)
  • Patent number: 11472060
Abstract: The present invention relates to a mechanized log splitter (or other powered ram application) and removable blade assembly The difference between this Mechanical Binding Log Splitter Blade assembly and traditional blade(s) is that the blade assemblies according to the invention are interchangeable without the time consuming use of mechanical fasteners or permanent adhesion of a welding process. On most log splitters the blades are either welded or bolted onto the splitter. With a Mechanical Binding Log Splitter Blade according to my invention, this is not necessary. Traditionally the blades were only changed or removed when and if they got damaged. By eliminating fasteners and welding it allows the operator a quick way to install the optimal bade for his operation.

  • Patent number: 9649777
Abstract: A log splitter where splitting force is generated by storing kinetic energy in a rotating flywheel. Rotational energy is converted to splitting force by means of a rack and pinion, which is coupled to the flywheels through a belt-driven clutch system. A belt rests around a driven sheave and a drive sheave. An idler pulley tensions the belt, causing the driven pulley to rotate. The idler pulley is attached to an actuation handle causing the idler to lock, by means of a latch, until the operator disengages the pulley, or until a component mounted to the rack forces the latch to disengage. The rack remains engaged to the pinion by a bearing mounting system. A spring bumper may be placed at the end of travel so that at the end of the stroke, the ram mechanism compresses the spring, and uses stored energy to reverse the ram, pinion and sheave.

Abstract: A trailer-mounted wood splitter with an integral platform, log boom and grappler provides an extended table area to facilitate the splitting of wood. The apparatus comprises a hydraulic-powered wood splitting assembly operated by an internal combustion engine mounted to a trailer. A horizontal surface worktable is provided all around the upper surface of the wood splitting plane. In such a manner, any wood that is placed upon the platform for splitting does not fall off after splitting is complete. This allows the user to reposition any remaining sections of wood for additional splitting without having to pick them up off the ground. Once completely split, the wood can be directed to the side of the table or platform for stacking or transportation. The apparatus further comprises a log boom with a grappler attached to a far end for moving and manipulating felled logs.

Abstract: This invention adds a very large (24×32 inch or larger) log table permanently mounted to the log splitter. This alone adds immeasurably to the efficiency and convenience of splitting. It allows for the true, convenient, and safe one-man operation of a splitter because it catches and stores the far side of the log and log pieces while the operator is free to handle the near side with one hand and the control valve with the other hand. The log lifter is powered hydraulically with the same cylinder, control valve, hoses and fittings that power the split wedge. Very simply, a cable and a pulley are used to direct the force of the existing cylinder to raise the log lifter. This simplicity lowers the cost of the log lifter considerably and makes it and the log table and the convenience of splitting in a more comfortable, standing position more readily available to the splitting public.

  • Patent number: 7104296
Abstract: A log splitting system comprises a splitter box, having entrance and discharge sections, each with top, bottom and sidewalls, and open entrance and discharge ends. A first set of cutting blades in the entrance section divides that section into at least two, first sections. A second set of cutting blades in the discharge section further divides each first section into at least two, second sections. The entrance and discharge sections are hinged at the top and pivot apart for cleaning and service. A ram assembly with a force applying surface contacts a log with the first set of cutting blades. The ram member's surface has surface portions, each sized to fit into one of the splitter box's first section, to further contact the log with the second set of cutting blades, splitting the log into at least four pieces.

Abstract: A log splitting system comprises a splitter box, having top, bottom and sidewalls, and open entrance and discharge ends. A first set of cutting blades secured adjacent to the entrance end divides the entrance end into at least two, first sections. A second set of cutting blades, secured adjacent to the first set of cutting blades and opposite the entrance end, further divides each splitter box's first section into at least two, second sections. A ram assembly with a force applying surface moveable toward the splitter box's entrance end contacts a log with the first set of cutting blades. The ram member's surface has a plurality of surface portions, each sized to fit into one of the splitter box's first section, to further contact the log with the second set of cutting blades, splitting the log into at least four pieces.

  • Patent number: 7096901
Abstract: Manually operated apparatus for splitting wood includes at least one axe-shaped blade vertically arranged on a support base. The at least one axe-shaped blade has an upward facing cutting edge. The axe-shaped blade is structured and arranged to receive thereon a lower end of a piece of wood so that the piece of wood can be split by a hammer blow directed to an upper end of the piece of wood. A saddle member is coupled to the support base. The saddle member is structured and arranged to allow the piece of wood to lean against the saddle member and to hold the piece of wood upright at the moment when the piece of wood receives the hammer blow. This Abstract is not intended to define the invention disclosed in the specification, nor intended to limit the scope of the invention in any way.

Abstract: A block impact splitter is comprised of a support frame connected on a swivel to a stationary frame. A hammer is provided with a hammer head and secured to a pivotal arm pivotally connected to the support frame at a pivot connection. An actuating piston has a cylinder end thereof pivotally connected to the support frame and a piston rod end pivotally connected to the pivotal arm. The actuating piston displaces the hammer head to impact against a pitching blade assembly and to retract it therefrom. The pitching blade assembly has a pivotal support arm to which is secured a pitching blade. An adjusting mechanism positions the pitching blade relative to a block to be split along a parting slot of the block.

  • Patent number: 7011123
Abstract: A new or retrofit block hoist for conventional, hydraulic-powered log splitters assists in the lifting, maneuvering, and positioning of large diameter, heavy logs that require multiple radial splits to section them for firewood, comprising a boom, pulley and cable system. A boom assembly is secured to the top end of the splitter guide beam and pulleys guide a lifting cable anchored to the wedge slide to a log section retainer means (dog or awl). The upward, hydraulically-powered movement of the cutting wedge along the I-beam lifts the log section as the wedge is raised into its upward, retracted position. Once lifted, the log is swung into position between the wedge and splitter foot plate. The wedge is then power extended (lowered), splitting the log. An optional turntable is securable to the footplate. The inventive block hoist can be provided as a kit.
