  • Patent number: 4830073
Abstract: The head (1) of the planing tool includes a plurality of helical grooves (2) of dovetail cross-section uniformly distributed over its periphery. Wedging devices (6) with knives (5) resting thereon are insertable sideways in the grooves. Disposed in each wedging device is a securing arrangement (7), actuation of which causes the associated wedging device-and-knife assembly to be pressed against the outwardly tapering sidewalls (17, 18) of the respective groove and held fast. Each of the knives has two opposite cutting edges (19, 20), either of which can be brought into operating position by reversing the knife. A second groove (16) runs parallel to each first groove (2) for receiving a guide component of a knife-aligning device. Owing to the helical configuration of the grooves and the precisely aligned cutting edges of the reusable knives disposed in the grooves, vibration-free machining of workpieces with planing widths of up to more than two meters is possible.

  • Patent number: 4819703
Abstract: An improved planing head for a wood planar is the subject of the present invention. A cylindrical planing head has a plurality of slots which receive the cutting blades and gib means for holding the blades in place during the planing operation. The slots and gibs are designed so that the blade sits on the bottom of the slot and tightening of the gib forces the blade down against the slot bottom. This assures that the blade will always remain in proper alignment. It is preferable to employ jack screws in the bottom of the slot so as to provide means for adjusting the blade height as needed. In either case, the only requirement for realigning a blade when an old blade is taken out and a new blade is put in is to be sure that the bottom of the blade sits on the bottom of the slot where it will be in the exact same position as the previous blade.

The cutting blade (70) is fixed in elevation within the blade slot (68) by a projection (66) on the blade carrier (60) engaging a recess (72) on a side of the blade between its cutting edges.

  • Patent number: 4303113
Abstract: The disclosure relates to a tool consisting of a tool body and cutter bits which are each secured in a slot in the body. By means of a tension screw which engages with the end portion of the bit located most proximal the bottom of the slot, the bit is fixedly retained in the slot under the application of a torque, the bit engaging with the slot walls at, in particular, three points; namely a point on the chipping face of the bit above a clearance disposed between this face and the slot face adjacent the bottom of the slot, a point on the rear face of the bit adjacent the periphery of the tool body, and, finally, the bottom of the slot. The tension screw engages with a surface on the bit which is located beneath a plane at right angles to the longitudinal direction of the bit through the abutment point on the chipping face of the bit, the surface preferably making an angle of approximately 45.degree. with this plane.

  • Patent number: 4280542
Abstract: The invention is directed to a cutterhead for a portable power planer. The cutterhead includes a cylindrical body having a substantially cylindrical surface and defining a rotational axis about which the cylindrical body rotates during normal operation of the power planer. A solid elongated cutting member is provided and has a channel formed therein to define at least two cutting edges. The cylindrical body has an elongated recess formed therein for holding the cutting member. The recess extends in a direction parallel to the rotational axis of the cutterhead and defines a longitudinal aperture in the surface for accommodating one of the cutting edges. The recess has a recess wall extending inwardly away from the aperture to surround and hold the cutting member against the centrifugal forces acting thereupon during the rotation of the cylindrical body.

Abstract: A rotatable cutter spindle for cutting chips of predetermined length has a supporting body having an axis, and a plurality of cutters mounted on the body in spaced relationship to one another and inclined relative to the axis of the body. Each of the cutters includes an acute angle with the axis and has a leading and a trailing end and defines cutting angles which differ from one to another of these ends. Each of the cutters has alternately arranged radially outer cutting edges and radially inner cutting edges of which the radially inner cutting edges are formed by grooves which are provided in the cutters and which have a width that increases from the leading end toward the trailing end of the cutter. The radially outer cutting edges are arranged at a first common circular surface, whereas the radially inner cutting edges are arranged at a second common circular surface.
