    Abstract: A tree and stump remover, suitable for use on skid-steer or similar vehicles, has a coupling operative with standard bucket mounts. Forward and generally centrally protruding from the coupling is a knife with teeth, serrations, or hooks. In alternative embodiments, the teeth, serrations, or hooks may move relative to each other, or be fixedly mounted. Knife support plates extend the width of the apparatus, and are provided for engagement with the base of a tree. In one preferred embodiment, additional smaller spikes extend adjacent to and spaced from the knife, which further facilitate cutting roots and toppling a tree in a single movement. A process of removing trees and stumps using the preferred apparatus includes cutting the roots extending away from the stump or tree from at least a first side, lifting or toppling the remaining root bundle, and shaking or piercing the root bundle to release dirt retained therein.

    Abstract: A stump cutter controller and operator presence system includes one or more capacitive sensors in each of the three control levers that control movement of the cutter wheel. A sensor circuit measures changes in the capacitance of the sensors. The controller automatically disengages a drive clutch and applies a brake to the cutter wheel when the controller senses that an operator has left the operating station—which is assumed when the operator has not touched any one of the three control levers of the operator station for a predetermined time. The controller logic is set to allow the clutch to remain engaged during a delay period, of predetermined duration, to permit the operator to move a hand off of one control lever to another control lever. Also, a grace period, of varying duration based on the speed of the cutter wheel, may be provided during which the clutch is reengaged if an operator returns to the controls.

The gearbox is driven by the drive shaft which is configured for coupling to the power take off shaft of a conventional tractor. The opposite end of the frame includes a plurality of fastening means for securely fastening the frame to the tractor. The grinding drum is designed so that its upper circumference rotates away from the tractor and thus away from the operator so that any loose debris is thrust outwardly from the operator. Grinding drum power is achieved through the tractor itself. The shroud covering covers the upper portion of the grinding drum in the interests of operator safety.

The stump sections that are removed have comparatively little dirt and rocks attached thereto, and these can be more easily burned, cut into chips, or transported.
