Tree Felling Patents (Class 144/336)
  • Patent number: 4462439
Abstract: A chain saw mountable on a powered vehicle having a chain support with a loop-defining chain run including an exposed cutting run portion. The chain support has a lower surface which defines a lower tree-cutting surface along which the lower support surface travels during cutting. The non-cutting run portion of the chain loop is disposed coincident with or above this lower surface. The upper surface of the support covers the non-cutting run portion and has a general wedge-shaped tapering toward the cutting run portion.

  • Patent number: 4446897
Abstract: There is provided a method and apparatus for felling a tree. A tree is cut through with a circular saw, and then substantially immediately after the cutting, the tree is clasped by a grapple means. The apparatus for cutting the tree may include an offset exposed arc of the circular saw, and by mounting the apparatus on a swingable boom, it is possible to cut the tree in a scything or scythe-swinging action.

  • Patent number: 4445557
Abstract: A method and apparatus for severing trees and other similar objects extending at least partially above and at least partially below the surface of the ground. A frame member which is mountable on a vehicle is moved in a substantially horizontal plane above the surface of the ground. A pair of circular cutting disks having sharpened peripheral edges are rotatably mounted on the frame laterally spaced from each other. The disks are arranged such that the imaginary planes formed by the sharpened edges of the disks are inclined from the surface of the ground and intersect at a point below the surface of the ground, such that the inclined planes have opposite slopes and such that the sharpened edge of one of the disks is substantially adjacent the sharpened edge of the other disk.

  • Patent number: 4445552
Abstract: This invention is directed to a method and apparatus for continuously harvesting trees to be used ultimately for lumber, pulpwood, and the like. The method comprises moving a tree cutting means through trees standing along the edge of a stand of trees in a continuous manner at a rate whereby the trees along the path taken by the tree cutting means are cut continuously and collected in a substantially parallel pattern on a trough-like means. The apparatus comprises a tree cutting means, means such as a power wagon for moving the cutting means through trees standing along the edge of the stand of trees, framework means for collecting and guiding the cut trees and depositing them in a substantially parallel manner on the trough-like means which is part of or accompanies the cutting means and the tree collecting and guiding means.

  • Patent number: 4434827
Abstract: Method and apparatus for felling and bunching trees is provided by means of a support mounted on a vehicle and a carriage mounted for movement along the support in a horizontal direction substantially perpendicular to the direction of movement of the vehicle. The carriage mounts a tree cutting mechanism and a grapple that grips the tree while it is being cut by the cut off mechanism. After the tree is cut the carriage is moved along the support to one end thereof and the grapple moved to a depositing position and releases the cut tree to the side of the path of travel of the vehicle. The present invention permits the vehicle to simply move backwards and forwards along a path to cut a swath through the trees while piling the cut trees immediately adjacent to but to one side of the swath cut by the equipment.
