Patent number: 7891390Abstract: A tree pusher for safely felling a tree. The tree pusher includes (a) a base; (b) a frame mounted on the base; (c) a mechanism for pushing the frame against the tree to fell the tree; and (d) a mechanism for connecting the base of the tree pusher to the tree, so that the base will not move while the tree is being pushed over to fell the tree. The frame includes a detachable pronged head which engages the trunk of the tree, and which disengages itself from the frame of the tree pusher and remains with the trunk of the tree as the tree falls. The frame includes a series of tubes connected end-to-end by locking pins, making it very easy to assemble and disassemble the tree pusher. If a tree has accidentally fallen against a house, a building, or an electrical power line, two tree pushers are positioned on opposite sides of the fallen tree and used to lift the fallen tree.Type: GrantFiled: April 30, 2010Date of Patent: February 22, 2011Inventor: Wayne J. Smith

Patent number: 7882865Abstract: A boom unit for a tree processing machine having a boom with a square cross-section. The boom unit has a boom support with a front boom mounting at the front end of the support and a rear boom mounting at the rear end of the support. The boom is movably mounted through the front and rear boom mountings and is positioned to have a corner of the boom on the bottom and an opposite corner of the boom on the top directly over the bottom corner. The front mounting has a pair of front, bottom rollers arranged in a v shape to cradle the boom with the bottom corner of the boom between the rollers and a single, top, guide member above the bottom rollers and centered with respect to the bottom rollers to ride on the top corner of the boom to hold the boom against the bottom rollers.Type: GrantFiled: September 20, 2006Date of Patent: February 8, 2011Inventor: Laurent Denis

Patent number: 7086433Abstract: An assembly for felling a segment of a tree trunk in a safe and controlled manner and method of using the same. The assembly comprises a vertical support structure having an elongated base portion, an elongated mast portion connected to the base portion or integrally formed therewith and having at least a portion extending upwardly therefrom, and a horizontal lip extending from the base or integrally formed therewith for contacting engagement with a conventional notch formed in the trunk. The method of felling a tree trunk comprises positioning the tree felling assembly along the trunk, cutting a conventional notch in the trunk below the assembly, the notch having a lower surface, repositioning the assembly along the trunk so that the lip is in contacting engagement with at least a portion of the lower surface, securing the assembly to the trunk below the segment, cutting the segment from the trunk, and lowering the segment from the trunk along a take-away cable operatively engaging the assembly.Type: GrantFiled: December 4, 2003Date of Patent: August 8, 2006Inventor: Robert F. Serman

Patent number: 6604562Abstract: A tree pusher for safely felling trees. The tree pusher controls and determines the direction in which the tree falls, using a base, a frame, a detachable head which engages the tree trunk, and an extendable screw-type trailer jack that is repairable/replaceable during operation and capable of bearing the weight of a large tree, for urging the frame and the head against the trunk of the tree. For use on uneven ground, the tree pusher is provided with a base extension. A chain is used to connect the base of the tree pusher to the trunk of the tree, to prevent movement of the base when the jack is activated. The tree pusher can be readily moved to the job site, and can be used on any type of terrain, including hard surfaces, and for any type of tree, including trees with rotten wood.Type: GrantFiled: June 17, 2002Date of Patent: August 12, 2003Inventor: Wayne J. Patent number: 6418989Abstract: A method of standing-stem log harvesting including the steps of preparing a tree for harvesting and then harvesting the same directly from the stump. A tree is prepared for harvesting by topping the tree, cutting the tree part way through the trunk near ground level with two cuts lying in generally the same plane to leave holding wood between the resulting two generally parallel cut edges, and driving support wedges or the like into both said cuts to stabilize the tree trunk. The holding wood and the wedges maintain the trunk stable and upright until it is harvested, but the holding wood is readily frangible in response to a generally horizontal pivoting force applied to the trunk near the top thereof in a direction generally perpendicular to the cut edges. For harvesting, the prepared tree is gripped near the top thereof, and a generally horizontal force is applied to the trunk at the point of gripping in a direction generally perpendicular to the cut edges, thereby breaking the holding wood.Type: GrantFiled: August 16, 2000Date of Patent: July 16, 2002Inventor: Philip S.
