Publication number: 20100078096Abstract: The present invention relates to an apparatus and method for shaving the inside of barrels. In particular, the present invention relates to reconditioning used wine barrels by shaving the inside surface to a predetermined depth, ready for re-crozering, toasting, and re-use. Conventional shaving methods typically involve routing the internal surface by hand, but this technique is problematic in that it is a very slow process, the quality of the wood is often adversely affected, and there is no way of ensuring that the surface will be shaved to the same depth across the entire surface. Therefore, the resultant internal dimensions of the barrel are not reflective, relatively, of the original barrel surface. The apparatus of the present invention includes a scanning means adapted to scan the internal dimensions of the barrel, and a cutting means adapted to shave the internal surface to a predetermined depth relative to the scanned internal dimensions.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 5, 2009Publication date: April 1, 2010Inventor: BRECK WATERMAN

Patent number: 7543615Abstract: In a first aspect of the invention, there is provided a new method for edging a wood board. This method comprises the steps of constructing from the scanned images of a wood board, a virtual entity of the wood board; determining from the scanned images an optimized cut line along the virtual entity; displacing the forward edge of the virtual entity ahead of the leading edge of the wood board; displacing the rear edge of the virtual entity behind the trailing edge of the wood board and sawing the wood board along the optimized cut line on the virtual entity. In another feature, the saw blades inside the board edger are mounted in saw collars and are shifted along the arbor by an electric setworks mounted on the top of the saw box and a shifting arm extending vertically between the setworks and a respective saw collar.Type: GrantFiled: December 16, 2004Date of Patent: June 9, 2009Assignee: U.S. Natural Resources, Inc.Inventors: James D. Patent number: 7536939Abstract: The invention concerns an apparatus and method for guiding a plank towards cutting tools for curve sawing of the plank. The apparatus comprises a first guide and drive mechanism mounted on a platform for receiving, guiding and driving the plank along a path. The first mechanism comprises two first elements arranged opposite relative to the path. The apparatus comprises a second guide and drive mechanism mounted on the platform for guiding and driving the plank from the first mechanism along the path on the support surface up to the cutting tools. The second mechanism comprises two second elements arranged opposite relative to the path while being parallel to the path. The elements of the mechanisms located on the same side of the path are connected through a pivot pin. The apparatus further comprises displacing means for parallel and equidistant displacement relative to the path of the elements of the mechanisms.Type: GrantFiled: June 25, 2004Date of Patent: May 26, 2009Inventor: Côme Bureau

Publication number: 20090095377Abstract: At least one geometric characteristic for each of a number of pieces of lumber is determined. Each of the pieces of lumber may then be logically associated with at least one of a log or a cant from which the piece of lumber was sawn.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 16, 2007Publication date: April 16, 2009Inventor: Earl Barker

Publication number: 20090095378Abstract: A light source is used to illuminate a sawn portion of a piece of wood and exposed surfaces of the saw blade on both sides of the sawn portion. The sawn portion and the exposed surfaces of the saw blade are then imaged substantially concurrently using a single image generator. At least one geometric characteristic of the sawn portion and at least one geometric characteristic of the saw blade are determined based on the imaging.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 16, 2007Publication date: April 16, 2009Inventor: Earl Barker

Publication number: 20090095379Abstract: The geometric characteristics for a plurality of boards that have been completely sawn by a gangsaw are determined. A sawn surface of one of the plurality of boards is then logically associated with one of the plurality of saw blades in the gangsaw.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 16, 2007Publication date: April 16, 2009Inventor: Earl Barker

Patent number: 7490641Abstract: An optimizing planer system includes a control system; a workpiece feed path; and, an optimizing planer. The optimizing planer is operably coupled to the control system. The optimizing planer is located along the workpiece feed path and has an entrance, for receipt of a rough workpiece, and an exit, for discharge of an at least partially finished workpiece. The optimizing planer includes a cutting element. A workpiece interrogator is situated along the workpiece feed path, upstream of the entrance. The interrogator is operably coupled to the control system so to provide the control system with workpiece property information for each workpiece entering the optimizing planer. The control system provides the optimizing planer with control information based upon the workpiece property information for each workpiece.Type: GrantFiled: March 15, 2004Date of Patent: February 17, 2009Assignee: USNR/Lockums Cancar CompanyInventors: Ronald W.
