Abstract: A method for producing a surface-hardened material, comprising: an immersion step of immersing an iron steel material having nitrogen attached in the form of a solid solution on the surface thereof in a melt containing a chloride at a temperature ranging from 650° C. to 900° C.; and a cooling step of cooling the immersed iron steel material to a temperature equal to or lower than a martensitic transformation start temperature at a cooling rate equal to or higher than a lower critical cooling rare at which martensitic transformation starts.
Abstract: A chain element (2), in particular a chain pin (4), for joining at least two chain links (3), characterized in that it comprises a surface layer (5) containing boron and vanadium, formed by at least one step of diffusing boron and vanadium in the areas of the chain element (2) which are close to the surface. The surface layer (5) containing boron and vanadium is formed by boriding and subsequently vanadizing a substrate material having a carbon content of 0.60 wt.-% to 1.0 wt.-%.
Abstract: In one embodiment, the present disclosure relates generally to a method for thermally decomposing a complex precursor salt. In one embodiment, the method includes heating a salt in a reactor until a molten salt is formed, adding the complex precursor salt to the molten salt in the reactor and removing a volatile precursor halide formed from thermal decomposition of the complex precursor salt from the reactor.

Abstract: The present invention relates to methods and compositions for reducing damaging oxidation of metals. In particular, the present invention relates to nanoparticle surface treatments and use of nanoparticle surface treatments to reduce the damaging oxidation and corrosion of stainless steel and other alloy components in oxidating and corrosive conditions.
Abstract: A process for hardening a work piece of stainless steel through diffusion of the elements carbon and/or nitrogen into the work piece surfaces. The work piece is submerged into a molten salt bath and subjected to the molten salt bath for a period ranging from 15 minutes to 240 hours at temperatures below 450° C. In addition to potassium chloride and lithium chloride, the molten salt bath contains an activator substance consisting of barium chloride, strontium chloride, magnesium chloride and/or calcium chloride, and a free or complex cyanide as carbon-donating substance.
Abstract: A chain pin manufacturing method that requires only one heat treatment step of forming a boundary part composed of (V, Cr) 8C7 by Cr and C in a base material at first through a cementation process in a VCl atmosphere by using Cr-rich steel as the pin base material and of forming a surface layer composed of V8C7. A Cr content in the boundary part decreases gradually toward the base material and the surface layer and the boundary part is not clearly divided. The inventive manufacturing method is simple and enables to manufacture the pin having high abrasion resistance and suitably used in a severe environment like a timing chain.

Abstract: A process for heat treating metal workpieces contains with respect to an efficient process control the following successive operations following directly one after the other: a heating phase; an enrichment phase; a first cooling phase; a bonding phase; a second cooling phase; and a concluding quenching phase. Workpieces processed by a method of this type are distinguished by a comparatively great fatigue limit and fatigue strength with simultaneous high resistance to wear and tear.

Abstract: In order to produce a carbon solid solution or carbide-containing surface layer on a substrate, the substrate is immersed into a cold bath of liquid active medium, and heated inside the liquid active medium by heating means immersed in the liquid active medium as well.
