Patent number: 6481041Abstract: A tool (10) for removing ice, snow, and general debris from vehicles. The tool (10) broadly comprises an elongated handle (14) having opposed first and second ends, a brush head (12) pivotally coupled to the first end of the handle (14) by a pivot mechanism (16), and a scraper (18) attached to the second end of the handle (14). The pivot mechanism (16) comprises a spring-loaded knob (46) which may be easily actuated with one hand and whose large proportions make operation by gloved hands convenient. To pivot the brush (12), an operator merely depresses and turns the knob (46) of the pivoting mechanism (16). Two pair of detents (21), arranged 90° to one another, lock the brush (12) into a first position, in which the brush is aligned with the handle (14) and may be used with a sweeping motion, or a second position, in which the brush (12) is perpendicular to the handle (14) and may be used with a pushing or pulling motion.Type: GrantFiled: September 11, 2000Date of Patent: November 19, 2002Assignee: Hopkins Manufacturing CorporationInventor: Vicki Ingram

Publication number: 20020162573Abstract: A sponge mop is fitted with a wringing device. The wringing device includes a sleeve that slidably surrounds the handle of the mop. A roller is attached to the sleeve and is spaced from the sleeve. A rod is pivotally attached at one end to the mop head and at the other end to a small slide block that slides on a handle-mounted rail. The slide block bears against a portion of the sleeve housing with adequate pressure so that downward movement of the sleeve moves the slide block and thus the rod, thus effecting the rotation of the mop head by, ultimately, 90 degrees such that the sponge is positioned with its cleaning face parallel to the axis of the handle. Further downward travel of the sleeve allows the roller on the device to expel water held by the sponge. A scrubber/scraper is attached to the mop head at the end which is remote from the handle when mop head is generally aligned with the handle.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 4, 2001Publication date: November 7, 2002Applicant: Products of Tomorrow, Inc.Inventor: Juan Fernandez

Patent number: 6412138Abstract: The primary structural parts of the handle are two telescopic tubes, the smaller diameter tube being an extrusion. A rib on the smaller tube engages a notch in a fitting attached to the larger tube to prevent relative rotation of the tube. A box footplate is attached to the free end of the larger tube with two degrees of angular freedom. The two axes of angular motion are perpendicular to each other and the axis of the handle. Angular motion of the box plate about one axis is transmitted by bevel gearing to telescopic torque transmission mechanism in the handle. Rotation of this mechanism and thereby the box plate about one axis is preventable by a lever operated clamp at the end of the handle. Rotation of the box plate about the other axis is manually adjustable. The length of the handle is manually adjustable and is set at a particular length by a lever operated length lock assembly.Type: GrantFiled: February 11, 2000Date of Patent: July 2, 2002Inventor: Donald M. Patent number: 6279189Abstract: An attachment in which the flexible member is rectangular in shape and has limit stops which are affixed at a location between the handle and the head of a brush broom to provide a controlled flexible member at the junction where the handle is attached to the head. Through the use of the controlled flexible member being rectangular in shape, the handle maintains rigidity in the direction in which the brush broom head is moved but is flexible in the lateral direction and therefore can be bent at controlled angles relative to the head. Therefore, when the brush broom head comes in contact with a stationary object such as the leg of a table, the brush broom head will flex or flow around the object without damage to the broom head or object.Type: GrantFiled: November 22, 1999Date of Patent: August 28, 2001Inventor: Simon Ralph Cassar

Patent number: 6260238Abstract: The primary structural parts of the handle are two extruded telescopic tubes. A longitudinal rib on the smaller, inner tube slides in a groove in the rib on the larger, outer tube, preventing relative motion between the tubes. A box footplate is pivotally attached on a shaft to the free end of the outer tube with the axis of the shaft intersecting the long axis of the tubes and perpendicular to it. Rotation of the footplate is transferred by bevel gearing to a rod at the centers of the tubes which extends through a collet mechanism installed inside the smaller tube near its overlapped end. A lever and related linkage are attached to a fitting installed at the free end of the inner tube. The linkage connects the lever to the collect mechanism. Operation of the lever causes the collet to clamp onto the rod, thus locking the box footplate angular motion and the length of the handle. An auxiliary mechanism may be provided for locking the handle at any of a series of lengths.Type: GrantFiled: October 7, 1999Date of Patent: July 17, 2001Inventor: Donald Mark MacMillan
