Patent number: 7083238Abstract: A multi-piece safety wheel includes a plurality of circumferentially spaced, interlocking bosses and tabs on the inner rim portion and outer rim portion. In the event of improper disassembly of the wheel with an inflated tire mounted thereon, any failure of the wheel assembly fasteners will result in the outer rim portion separating from the inner rim portion a sufficient distance to vent air pressure from within the tire, at which point the interlocking bosses and tabs resist further movement of the outer rim portion. The outer rim portion is thereby resisted from becoming a potentially dangerous projectile. A method of safely deflating the tire upon improper disassembly of the multi-piece safety wheel is also provided.Type: GrantFiled: August 23, 2004Date of Patent: August 1, 2006Assignee: Alcoa, Inc.Inventors: Roger Frank Clements, Zara Finley Hudson, Matthew Charles Brest, Donald R. Patent number: 5460433Abstract: A skate wheel includes a reusable hub and a replaceable tire. The hub consists of (i) a rim with an integral clamp ring, (ii) an attachable clamp ring that attaches to the rim after a tire is mounted on the rim and (iii) a threaded ring which fastens onto the rim and secures the attachable clamp ring to the rim. Each of the clamp rings includes an inwardly pointing arm. These arms extend into annular grooves on the sides of the tire, to grip the tire and hold it in place on the rim. In a preferred embodiment the outer ring screws onto the rim and in position against the clamp ring, to retain the claim ring on the rim. To replace a worn tire, a user unscrews the outer ring, removes the attachable clamp ring and then removes the old tire from the rim. He then slides a new tire onto the rim, holds the tire in place with the attachable clamp ring and secures that ring in place with the outer ring.Type: GrantFiled: January 21, 1994Date of Patent: October 24, 1995Inventor: Peter Hawley

Patent number: 4573509Abstract: An annular ring-shaped run flat device is used in tires to permit continued use of the tire even when the tire is operating at low pressure or is completely deflated. This device is comprised of a rigid section and a non-rigid section. The tire, when it collapses, due to a reduction in pressure, comes to rest on the surface of the non-rigid, resilient, impact resistant section. This device is easy to assemble, can be used with conventional multi-piece rims, is light weight, durable and capable of absorbing impact under both inflated and deflated conditions. The device can also be used as a positive and non-positive bead spacer to prevent dismounting of the tire beads when tire pressure drops.Type: GrantFiled: August 31, 1984Date of Patent: March 4, 1986Assignee: The Goodyear Tire & Rubber CompanyInventors: William T. Patent number: 4175606Abstract: An assembly for mounting tubeless tires on tube type rims. The assembly includes a pair of cooperating annuluses that define respective seating surfaces each of which are adapted for receiving one of the companion beads of the tire. One of the annuluses is telescoped onto the rim and positioned adjacent the rim flange integrally formed with the rim proximate one of its axial end portions. A locking annulus secured to the opposite axial end portion of the rim is adapted for receiving the companion bead and can be readily secured to or removed from the rim for purposes of mounting or demounting the tubeless tire without forcing the beads over a flared flange. The locking annulus may be mounted on a variety of conventional tube type rims while maintaining the bead seating surface at a predetermined spaced location from the rim wall. A suitable pneumatic inner tube inserted in the tire serves to prevent air from escaping the confines of the tubeless tire which may have damaged sealing properties.Type: GrantFiled: April 28, 1977Date of Patent: November 27, 1979Assignee: Clifford E.
