  • Patent number: 5618362
Abstract: A radial ply tire for vehicle wheels has a torus-shaped body of elastomeric material which contains a belt-shaped reinforcing insert which has in the region underneath the tread of the tire a strip which is stretchable, pre-loadable and, under the influence of external forces, restorable in the circumferential direction of the tire. The strip of the reinforcing insert contains apertures extending largely transversely with respect to the circumferential direction of the tire. The apertures extend only partially through the strip in a transverse direction and are arranged in rows, the apertures being parallel and offset with respect to one another in successive rows. Between them there are transversely extending unbroken portions which provide the desired transverse stiffness of the belt.

  • Patent number: 5616195
Abstract: An improved pneumatic radial ply truck tire 10 having an aspect ratio below 0.70 is designed to replace two conventional truck tires on the trailer axle of semi-trailers. These tires 10 are commonly referred to as Super Single Tires. The improved tire 10 has a radially outer tread surface 30 which is defined by three radii of curvature R.sub.1, R.sub.2, and R.sub.3 on each side of the tread centerline C.sub.L. Radii R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are internal to the tire 10 whereas radius R.sub.3 is external to the tire 10 and defines the outer surface 30C of the tread shoulder region. The combination of curvatures 30A, 30B and 30C yields a substantially rectangular contact patch greatly improving the treadwear rates of the tire 10. The tire 10 has the radius R.sub.2 in the range of 1.3 to 2 times the radius of curvature R.sub.1, the external radius R.sub.3 is in the range of 0.7 to 2.5 times the first radius of curvature R.sub.1, preferably in the range of 1.0 to 2.5 times R.sub.

  • Patent number: 5605589
Abstract: An asymmetric reinforcement belt structure for a pneumatic tire includes an outer belt and inner belt, each reinforced with a plurality of generally parallel cords. The outer belt has a first portion between the centerlines of the cords and a first surface and a second portion between the centerlines of the cords and a second surface. The first portion has a thickness T1 which is between 110% and 150% of T2. Similarly, the inner belt has a third portion and a fourth portion, with the third portion being between the centerlines of the cords and a third surface and a the fourth portion being between the centerlines of the cords and a fourth surface. The fourth portion has a thickness T4 which is between 50% and 90% of a thickness of the third portion T3. Orienting the cords within the belts in this way separates them slightly more than would be so if the belts were symmetrical.

  • Patent number: 5597426
Abstract: The tires for vehicles possess under their tread a belt which extends in the circumferential direction. At least one, preferentially two, layers contain, as strengthening and stabilizing means, foils or sheets with direction-dependent rigidity, which possesses its highest value in a preferred direction. The foils or sheets are so arranged that the preferred direction is oblique to the circumferential direction. Preferentially, the direction-dependent rigidity is realized with a waving or crimping. Through this alignment, which is arranged oblique to the tire circumference, the stabilizing effect of the waving is seen in both the longitudinal as well as the oblique directions. Thus, in comparison with the usual belted tires, less material is needed in tire production, and these tires are both light, but nevertheless possess good driving characteristics and superb rolling resistance.
